SLR-Like Just Like the Title Says
- Pros: The camera is easy enough to use in AUTO mode and powerful enough for most photographers to utilize the MANUAL mode. The images are crisp, clear, and easy to manipulate. This version even has "dummy proof" explanations in the menu to help novice photographers understand the camera. The lens is awesome and image stabilization is ridiculously helpful for folks without a tripod.
The camera, like most digital cameras, struggles in low light situations. HOWEVER, by making adjustments to ISO and shutter speed, awesome results can be achieved. This won't occur in the manual mode since this camera is much more than a point and shoot model.
I have owned every version of this camera, all the way back to the S1IS, and Canon keeps making improvements to this model every year. This camera is no exception. With the addition of 720p video and a mini-HDMI connection, this camera puts you on the verge of SLR. Based on these factors, I would buy this camera again in a blink of an eye.
- Cons: I CANNOT BELIEVE that Canon did not add a tether to the lens cap. If you read the rants on Newegg concerning this in the SX10IS, I was certain that this would be addressed. It is ridiculously disappointing and totally unacceptable not to include it in this model. That fact alone keeps it from receiving five eggs.
Secondly, while RAW would be awesome, the reality is that the camera is meant for that kind of high level photography. HOWEVER, the choice to continue using MOV format is another serious disappointment. Sure, file sizes are reduced, but sorry, so is the video quality. The video on this camera make look good, but the format is very Windows unfriendly, and from my personal perspective, lacks fluidity and the sharpness of even the S5IS, my favorite version of this camera.
Finally, since Canon clearly raised the price on the camera with this version, most likely to cover their costs of their lens error repairs, they should have included the mini-HDMI cable.
- Other Thoughts: The good far outweighs the bad with this camera. Canon, to their benefit, has been very good about dealing with the lens error issues of their cameras, as long as they're under warranty. The only question you need to ask with this camera is whether or not you're willing to sink another $150-$200 for a true SLR. If you're savvy in the world of photography, I would say "yes." However, I teach a digital photography course at a high school, and we live and die with these cameras. They're really very rugged and have just enough features/capabilities to give my students a solid foundation in digital photography.
Great Camera
- Pros: 20X Optical zoom, 720p Stereo Sound Video, Great Color reproduction, viewfinder, Easy navigation of setup options, Great Value for price.
- Cons: No lens cap strap, Too long of a screen pause between shots in continuous shoot mode.
- Other Thoughts: The sx20 takes amazing photos with great color reproduction with lots of great features. I field tested the sx20 at the local Zoo and was able to utilize it in low light, florescent light, and natural light, Using the preset scenes night scenery, indoor, and foliage respectively produced impressive results. I had the most trouble with very low light settings however I did not have a tripod so the results were anticipated. The button for adjusting exposure is a tad small but after about 20 minutes of use I was able to utilize it without removing my eye from the view finder. The camera has a very sturdy feel and can be gripping solidly by your hands. although this is technically a point and shoot, it feels about as nice as you can get without actually having an SLR. The only thing I found troublesome (and there may be a setting to change it) is that when you shoot in continuous mode the screen freezes for a tad too long and it makes it hard to track moving bojects while shooting.

Very Happy
- Pros: 12 megapixels, video in 720HD, AA batteries for power, auto mode takes great pictures, even better pictures if you read the extensive manual and program in some setting to the favorites menu. I also like the manual flash, you have to lift it up yourself so it doesn't have that annoying pop up flash just as your about to take a picture, it tells you that you need the flash and you do it yourself. This camera has tons of features and even the digital zoom at full zoom is clear. I took a close up of my neighbors cat from about 30 yards and you could see the whiskers clear as day. This is as close to D-SLR as you'll get without buying one, continuous mode isn't as fast as D-SLR but at 1 pic every 0.7 secs it's pretty close.
- Cons: No strap on the lens cover but thats hardly worth removing an egg for. No mini HDMI cable, I bought one newegg had on sale for 16 bucks along with an hdmi - dvi adapter so I could hook it into my PC, beats the $80 the local big box electronics store wanted.
- Other Thoughts: buy a class 6 SDHC card, I had a class 4 already but there was a very noticable difference in write speed going to the class 6.
Good Point and Shoot
- Pros: I do like the camera, but I am critical of it's flaws!
Great aspects: Pixel count, zoom, speed. great picture quality, exceptional color results, 720 Video, Image Stabilization. Great amount of control for a point and shoot.
- Cons: No Raw Image support Native (There software hacks that allow it though).
Occasionally fuzzy photos, I found that you do need to really pay attention even on things that should be automatic. Surprisingly many that the camera said were focused but were not even close. Just beware. Purple fringing. Not an issue except in high light contrast situation. No factory support for Lense filters. Menu System/Controls. Maybe a con and maybe not. Even though it is a P&S it is really more like an SLR in capabilities. It is much more difficult to manage then your average SLR though. Full Auto sometimes struggled capturing good pictures. It didn't give enough priority to shutter speed and caused images that lacked crispness. Even in fairly bright light this was sometimes an issue. A simple logic update that gives more priority shutter speed would fix this. Manually Pop-up flash - maybe an issue and maybe not. For a P&S I think it is but not for an experienced user. You must puch the flash up
- Other Thoughts: Just a quick review. Overall this is a very good camera. With the level of zoom on the camera the Image stabilization is a must unless you are using a tripod. I did purchase an after market adapter for filters and used 58mm filters. I ran into an issue when I stacked UV and Circular Polarizer and was at the 28mm range - the corners of the photos caught the rings for the filters. Unstacked - no problems. For the price and capabilities I think this is a great buy. I am hoping they update the ROM sometime soon to fix focusing issues.
Love it
- Pros: This is an excellent camera! Great zoom and superb picture quality, even in low light situations. Full featured, with tons of capability. The HD video is awesome.
- Cons: It is a relatively big camera, but that's not really a fault, but if you are looking for a shirt pocket camera this is not it.
- Other Thoughts: My previous camera was an SX10, so was familiar with Canon. The HD video alone was well worth the upgrade. Also I really like the on-screen explanations of each camera function, it really speeds up the learning curve.
