  • newegg Experience the Power The Canon HS SYSTEM takes the frustration out of low light shooting. The system delivers clear, blur-free shots with all the ambiance intact, and frees you from the sometimes unwanted effects of using the flash. Beautiful low light shots are possible at both low and high ISO speeds, and the dynamic range is expanded to retain maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The system is the result of two technologies brought together in a compact PowerShot. The first is the 12.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, which positions the light-receiving surface for optimal light reception. More light means clearer, blur-free images with plenty of detail and nuance, even in dark areas. Working together with the CMOS sensor to deliver the HS SYSTEM is Canon's advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor, which actively reduces noise and delivers high speed image processing.

1 out of 5 eggsA huge waste of time & money

Pros: A good zoom, makes the camera on my cell phone seem good (by comparison to this device)... and... is an expensive paper weight.

Cons: Poor image quality, poor build quality (cheap painted pastic), horrible customer service, poor communication.

Other Thoughts: Not being a photo buff, I have (not unreasonably) come to expect that a point and shoot camera will take much of the need to think about which settings will be required to turn out an ok or even good photo... this camera fails to deliver.

I purchased this camera late in the summer (at the full price of $329) prior to an international trip and used it extensively... only I discovered quickly that without fail outdoor photos would come out very washed out (regardless of amount of light), while indoor shots would, without fail come our blurry & grainy.

After later developing a physical fault, the unit was sent in for service and was clear as to the image quality issues as well... and after a rather poor experience with their 'service' department the physical fault was fixed, however the poor image quality issues remained.

Since the service was completed I gave Canon a piece of my mind (as they had requested), but I have yet to hear from them to try to get to the bottom of all of

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Camera

Pros: Very powerful Zoom, fast sequential picture taking, GPS, simple UI, small size, superb quality.

Cons: Direct sunlight exposure adjustment could be better when used in automatic mode.

Other Thoughts: I did not buy it from Newegg and I feel bad now. I actually paid almost $350 not too long ago. The camera is an incredible value for the price, the quality of the pictures professional. Based on reviews, I picked this model instead of a DSLR with zoom. I have no regrets.

2 out of 5 eggsComplete Disappontment

Pros: GPS feature and battery life

Cons: Mostly terrible pictures - I bought this for a vacation and was mostly disgusted with the results. The pictures were grainy, blurry, or overexposed. Some of them were okay but nothing that I would want to print. I am baffled by this because the camera has generally good reviews on the sites that I've seen. The lens cover no longer closes either.
In addition to the poor photo quality, the controls are in really weird places so that I ended up hitting a button when just trying to take a picture.
Maybe I got a bad one?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Camera

Pros: I'll let other reviews cover photo, I'm hitting the video.

For us it's great. Videos are smooth due to the OIS, deals with oversaturated areas well. CMOS sensor allows great video even in low light conditions. Audio is great, microphones are on the FRONT of the camera. Microphones on the TOP of the camera don't work well for capturing sound outdoors. Wind filter is effective. It's hard to find one device that handles still pictures/video and audio well. Canon pulled it off.

Cons: Battery life is short when shooting video, 45 minutes and it's done. File size is large, a 16GB card will only give an 1hr of 1080p video or 90min @ 720p. Cards aren't that expensive these days but loading the video to You tube takes awhile, even for a short clip. Sure I could take the stuff i know is going on Youtube at low resolution, but sometimes you don't know what you will end up loading.

Other Thoughts: Great camera but pick up and extra battery if you will be using it for video. Take card out of camera and insert directly into card reader for speedy file transfer. The camera's USB transfer is painfully slow for the large video files this generates.

5 out of 5 eggsHuge improvements over cameras from even a year ago

Pros: * Huge improvements over cameras from even a year ago
* 12MP and 14X zoom make for amazingly life-like photographs from both near and far
* Built in GPS for geotagging; this functionality comes DISABLED by default so you will need to navigate the menu system to turn it ON. It slightly reduces battery life when taking pictures
* Despite the salesman at Best Buy telling me I desperately just HAD to buy another battery because the camera would only take about 200 pictures on the "cr@ppy canon battery" (LOL) , I got a whopping 504 pictures in a variation of flash/non-flash settings while on my first day of vacation on a single battery charge, WITH GPS turned on for geotagging my photos.
* Easy to hold
* Easy to switch between different settings with the manual dial
* Beautiful & huge LCD screen
* Takes 1080p videos and has tons of features in the camera software

Cons: * If you leave the GPS Logging feature on (which keeps GPS on constantly to log your road trip) it will absolutely kill your battery.
* When you're ready to transfer pictures off the camera, do yourself a favor and take the SD card out and put it directly into a SD card reader, AND take the battery out and put it into the charger. Trust me on this.. transferring 1000 pictures off the SD card by using the camera directly (which doesnt charge via USB) will kill your battery.
* Charging a completely dead battery takes 2 hours
* No SD card included
* Wrist strap included does NOT have a way to tighten it to your wrist.. so don't go dangling this over water or high drops because it can slip off your hand if you arent holding the camera.

Other Thoughts: * Battery only lasted me from 10AM to 5PM on first day of vacation, taking 504 pictures. Some will find that more than enough, some will find it fall way short. For me, it meant reverting to using my camera phone from 5PM to 8PM because we were out all day site seeing, eating, etc. I should have bought a spare battery.
* I happen to have a nintendo 3DS which I bought a case for, and the cause is actually two cases zipped together. I didnt have a case for my camera, so I unzipped one of the 3DS cases.. and behold it had a belt loop! Great! So I looped it onto my belt and put the camera in, and zipped it up.. holds it perfectly and really made it easy to put the camera away/get it out quickly. I'm sure a lot of cases are like that but this particular case is LIGHT and SMALL. I recommend getting something like this if you'll be out walking.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Camera

Pros: You just can't go wrong with a canon IMO. 1080p video on this camera is amazing. Pics are life like. Easy to use features. Best pocket cam you can get that has ultra optical zoom @ 14x. Amazing canon can put that much optical zoom lens in such a small package. Purchased a 32gb SDHC class 10 card from newegg also for $37. Can take 2hrs of 1080p video! Just crazy! 3hrs of 720p video. Battery life so far so good. Purchased 2 cheap batteries (at $7 each) also with good life so far.

Cons: None so far. Turned off the GPS as I really do not need this feature to save battery life.
