Sony's history of electronic innovation combines with legendary optics from Carl Zeiss to make phenomenal compact digital cameras. The 7.2MP camera has Carl Zeiss optics with a 3X optical zoom (plus a 2X digital zoom). The 1/2.5" Hole Accumulated Diode sensor allows more light to pass to each pixel for increased sensitivity and reduced noise.

Sony's Clear RAW Noise Reduction System aids in cleaning up the picture noise normally associated with high ISO photography. The High Sensitivity/ISO 1000 mode lets you take pictures in low light without a flash to preserve the mood and take great candid shots.

Multiple movie modes including VX Fine let you take 640x480 movies at up to 30fps limited in length only by the amount of available memory. Picture modes like snow and beach allow you get great shots no matter where you are.

  • newegg 7.2 Megapixel Super HAD CCD The 7.2 megapixel CCD captures excellent detail and definition for large picture prints and cropping. Sony's advanced Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD allows more light to pass to each pixel for increased sensitivity and reduced noise.
  • newegg Carl Zeiss 3X Optical Zoom Lens Design A top-quality Carl Zeiss 3X optical zoom lens design helps the DSC-W55 bring distant subjects closer and lets you frame shots quickly for better composition—a real advantage for family sports, outdoor fun and travel photos.
  • newegg Large 2.5" LCD Screen The DSC-W55 provides a large, bright LCD screen for composing shots, checking results, sharing your photos on location and reading camera setup menus even in full sunlight.
  • newegg High Sensitivity Mode The innovative High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 1000) enables great shooting in low-light conditions. Sony's original Clear RAW NR (Noise Reduction) image processing technology helps suppress color noise accompanying high-sensitivity shooting.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Camera

Pros: This is my first digital camera, but I have tons of experience with cameras and would be called a freelancer in the photo world. For it's size the picture quality is simply amazing. A great point and shoot camera.

Cons: MSduo2 cards are more expensive than SD, but the prices are going down.

Other Thoughts: I wish I would have bought it at newegg. I was debating between the Casio Exilim Z75 and this, and I just decided for the little extra $$ I could be sure that a Sony product should be good.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm happy with the first 24 hours...

Pros: Quick power-up time
Great image quality- the auto-adjust settings offer superb color.
Captures motion well in well-lit situations
very light

Cons: Small amount of internal memory- 56 MB fills up fast with 7.2 MP images
the lightness of camera makes me worry about durability- make sure you get a warranty.

Other Thoughts: I've been really happy with the pictures I took on the first day. Camera is not fussy about taking a picture like previous cyber-shot models. In the same day I took pictures outdoors and in a bar, and they all came out great (some of the bar shots were a little grainy)
If you want a camera for general point-and-shoot use, this one will do you quite well.
