Good camcorder; home theater integration could be easier
- Pros: Good set of features.
Remote control can be used instead of touch screen, especially useful for delicate shots where poking at the screen would jolt the picture.
Hard drive holds about sixteen hours of video at highest quality.
Hybrid - supports SD card recording, useful for high altitudes or sudden accelerations (roller coaster?) when hard drive operation might be impaired.
The picture looks really nice under most lighting conditions.
Image stabilization makes a pretty big difference, especially when zoomed in.
- Cons: No input for external microphone.
Only supports 5.1 surround playback over HDMI when viewing directly from camera (see "other thoughts")
"Camera is panning too quickly" message appears a little more often than I'd like; fine details in moving background can blur even at low panning speeds.
Playback of video on PC can be quite demanding.
In low-light conditions, images can look grainy.
- Other Thoughts: This is my first HD camcorder. I didn't buy it on Newegg, but I did end up buying a new CPU and graphics card here when I saw how much my onboard graphics choked on the 1080i files. If you want to play these AVCHD videos under Windows, check out Media Player Classic HomeCinema, which can use your graphics card's hardware acceleration and made a world of difference for me.
Surround: it would have been nice to have a digital audio output apart from HDMI, which is the only cable not included. I don't have an HDMI-equipped receiver, so I have to run the cable into my Sony LCD TV, which mercifully allows DD5.1 passthrough over its optical output to my receiver, but I understand that not all TVs behave that way.
This camcorder can be controlled with the Harmony universal remotes even though it is not directly in the database; a related camcorder is listed as a Panasonic VCR and its remote is the same.
Great Full HD Camera
- Pros: I love this camera, pretty much point and shot. I playback my movies on my 47 inch HDTV via HDMI cable, and the picture is just astonishing. Its got a 3MOS chips....instead of only 1 and is a lot more clear'er then the other HD Cameras, I went thru a bunch of them at best buy and this one beat them all. even the more expensive sony's and canons.
- Cons: It doesn't come with a Mini-hdmi cable, have to buy else where. Some people complain about the touch screen, but i dont see any problem with it. Very easy to use.
- Other Thoughts: I bought a UV Lense and a wide angle lense and just WoW...amazing. I love my camera, i got it becuse my daughter is only 15 months old and i want to keep memories of her when she was a baby. Plus we are having a family get-together at the beach on this 4th of july. =)
