5 out of 5 eggsTop notch, like film

Comments: I also researched this quite a bit, and decided on this vice the xxx. This camera was lighter and easier to access everything from playback to manual controls. It took a few sessions to fine tune the way I use it, but when shooting in RAW format even poorly exposed images have enough info to clean up in software and make great shots. Combine this with a 1gig SD from NewEgg and shoot 90+ shots per card. I have over 500 shots now and am still on the first set of CVR-3 batteries that came with it. Excellent tone gradation and subtle detail, more similar to film than any digital I have used before.
Only drawback was manual white balance which fails in dim light unless you force spot metering for white balance. This is not well documented.

5 out of 5 eggsBest kept secret in dSLRs....

Comments: I may be a different kind of a photographer, since I jumped from a film Pentax SLR, directly into digital, wothout owning a p&s digicam. However, I searched, and researched for four months before deciding on the Pentax DS. The comparison cameras were the Nikon D70, and Canon Digital Rebel. I went to the local stores and looked at, and handled each camera. This is must. Four areas were my major concerns: weight, cost, lens availability, and inter-changeability. All three cameras are 6.1/6.3 MP, so they all produce great, and clear shots. The Pentax fits easily and perfectly in your hands, and even with my 28-200mm Temron lens, is lighter than the D70. The convenience of being able to use AA batteries when you are on the go, is a big plus. I also purchased a charger, and rechargable CR-V3 Polaroid batteries. The charger automatically recognizes the current, 120/240, so its no problem if traveling overseas. The Pentax has the largest LCD with a 2", very bright viewer. The slot and the use of SD cards is very easy, with a clickable door on the right side of the camera. There is also the convenience of connecting the DS, via a cable, to your TV, click to "slideshow" and just sit back and enjoy the show. Absolutely great dSLR, which will get a real test next year, when I take it to Europe.
