5 out of 5 eggsPentax Q - Small AND ergonomic?!?!

Pros: Durable - I dropped mine on gravel - no problem. Magnesium shell to the rescue!
Great picture quality at lower ISO's (not DSLR quality, but very good)
Firmware 1.12 makes autofocus very fast, even in low light
Good video quality
Ergonomics - amazing how something so small (smaller than my smart phone) can be so easy to control
Control interface - everything makes sense. I also have the Nikon V1... the Pentax Q is sooooooo much easier to use. Controls are where they should be and they are quickly accessible.
Focus Peaking - awesome feature! shows you exactly what is in focus - perfect for things like flowers/ macros
Great lenses available - the 01 standard prime is awesome as is the 06 zoom. I like the fisheye 03 a lot, but it's manual focus.

Cons: battery life is a bit short. For all day outings, I will make sure I have at least 3 batteries. The Wasabi batteries are cheap (do a search).

high iso images get a little soft - above 1600 ymmv

would like a wide angle zoom or prime w/ auto focus

lcd can get washed out in very bright light

Other Thoughts: This camera is engineered like a jewel - just beautiful that something so small can be such a pleasure to use and can take such stunning images.

5 out of 5 eggsThe little camera that could

Pros: Very good image quality
Decent high ISO performance
DSLR-like dynamic range
DSLR control in a pint-size package
Very versatile
Well designed
Great menu system, identical to Pentax DSLRs
Incredible build quality
Impossibly tiny, but easy to handle even for large hands
Smallest interchangeable lens system camera available
Will accept nearly any lens with correct adapter
5.6x crop factor makes 100mm SLR lens a 560mm on the Q.

Cons: Image quality good, but not quite up to DSLR standards
No optical viewfinder (You can use use a viewfinder loupe to fix this, though.)
Glare on screen in bright sunlight (Once again, use a loupe.)
Mediocre battery life

Other Thoughts: I've been an avid amateur photographer for going on 30 years. My other current cameras are Pentax DSLRs. I bought the Q as a "totearound" camera for when a DSLR is impractical. I fell in love with the Q almost instantly. I can do pretty much anything with the Q I can do with my DSLRs. Though the image quality falls short of a really good DSLR, it's still quite good. Good enough that I don't feel I'm "missing out" by using the Q. I also enjoy the 5.6x crop factor. With an adapter, a small 135mm DSLR tele lens becomes a 756mm monster tele on the Q! It's great for wildlife & birds. Those who say the image quality can't be good with such a tiny sensor probably haven't shot with one. It's a very capable little camera! I liked the Q so much there are now 4 of them in our household.

4 out of 5 eggsMuch more than a fashion item

Pros: very small yet good ergonomics, solid feeling metal body, intuitive and powerful menu options, good control layout, optically stabilized image system with any attached lens, HD video, 12-bit raw files for post-processing flexibility. Can use huge variety of lenses with adapters. Variety of image styles can be programmed to a front control dial. Pleasing color and white balance under most conditions. Decent low ISO noise performance and free from pattern noise across the whole practical ISO range. Can get a usable shot with ISO 3200. Built-in flash works in retracted or extended position. Conveniently located battery and SD card with good fitting doors. Good quality display.

It's so cute it makes grown men giggle.

Cons: battery life's a bit short, you'll need more than one battery if this is your main camera. Not enough optional Q-mount lenses available yet. Because the sensor is so small the per-pixel noise levels are a little high and could be better. (the Q10 is supposed to improve on this)

Other Thoughts: not a toy, update the firmware to improve many features, don't expect SLR-quality from it but provides great results if you know what you're working with and its limitations. Makes a great little travel camera with the small zoom. Good street shooter with the fast prime.
This is one of the more enjoyable cameras I've used, period, and the tiny size makes it even more fun to use. In experienced hands you can produce some very good quality large prints from this camera.

5 out of 5 eggsExcelllent & Fun!

Pros: Tiny
Excellent ergonomics
Build quality is truly outstanding
Lots of menu options
Front dial
Doors for battery and sd card are on the sides making use of tripod a breeze
Controls are easy to use despite small size
Flash extension reduces red eye
Focus peaking with firmware v1.1
In camera Shake Reduction so that even non-Q mount lenses via adapter are stabilized!

Cons: Battery life is poor - buy 3-4 extra non-OEM
Pentax accessories are outrageously pricey
Price until the last month or so

Other Thoughts: This is the most fun I have had with a camera in 30 years since my first personal SLR purchase. This little camera is just plain fun to shoot. It's a good platform for using K mount lenses, even with the non-Pentax adapters. I find that the front dial makes using the camera just a lot more fun. I've rediscovered B&W through that dial, wow. I've put a Manfrotto mini-tripod on the Q and its like a little Transformer with its fold away feet and pop-up flash . If you expect K-5 Raw quality photos you will be disappointed. If you are realistic and compare it to P&S and camera phones it rocks!

There are more adapters for this camera than any other I know of - that means you can use just about any glass from old cinema lenses to current Nikon and Canon lenses and everything in between with this 5.6x crop sensor.

Judge me by my size, do you?

3 out of 5 eggsToo little for Expectations

Pros: Nice materials. Feels rugged. James Bond small.

Cons: Super small outdated sensor. They should have used a better one. Image sensor has terrible camera software that makes using this camera very undependable.

Other Thoughts: A tripod is a must and forget about moving objects. Be prepared to spend alot of time sorting through good images only to find a few and fighting to control the image with the software settings that don't work very well. Could have been alot better but sadly this cool looking camera didn't mean my expectations as a serious photography tool. Note the great price drop on this camera. Got mine somewhere else. For the $250 price range get a well rated P&S camera and enjoy more.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little camera

Pros: I choose this Pentax for my wife who wants a nice camera to take pictures to accompany the articles she writes for a local journal. It has an easy functionality yet boast additional features to allow for artistic development. That was a big reason this choice. The compact size is great for her small hands, the 3" screen is a killer, allows a detailed view of the shot. The Auto function was very easy and help my wife overcome her fear of a camera which can be used manually too. Also, the HD videos are stunning.

Cons: Don't bother with the software that comes with the camera, I was not impressed. Windows will download the pictures automatically once the camera is connected by USB. Then you can use your current (and hopefully better) photo program.

Other Thoughts: The camera comes with a good entry price. This does offset to an extent, the additional purchase you will probably make for a good zoom lens. The lens which comes with the camera is only 2X and very standard. Also, after jumping up from a 5.1 megapixel to this camera, be prepared for the huge increase in data space your pictures will take on your computer.
