Tamron's next generation 18-270mm, the world’s lightest, smallest 15x zoom optimized for use on APS-C DSLRs, continues the pursuit of the ideal all-in-one zoom lens. Combining prior award-winning achievements with new engineering breakthroughs yielded the remarkable 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD (Piezo Drive). Special piezoelectric technology now delivers faster, quieter precision autofocusing. Tamron's exclusive tri-axial VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization, featuring three pairs of driving coils and low-function ball bearings placed around the VC optical group, combats camera shake-related image blur. It's Tamron VC that allows handheld shooting at as many as four shutter speeds slower than otherwise possible with a dramatically stable viewfinder experience. Compactness and light weight are preserved, thanks in part to the VC mechanism's newly-developed moving coil mechanism.

Defining compositional freedom the 18-270mm Di-II VC's incredible 15x zoom range provides a 35mm picture angle equivalency of 28mm to 419mm, with image fidelity assured by advanced optical design featuring LD glass and aspherical optics, working in concert to render crisp, colorful and faithful images.

  • newegg Compact and Easy to Carry 15X All-in-One Zoom with Outstanding Feature Set The 18-270mm Di II VC PZD boasts the world’s highest zoom range at 15x magnification for a lens with its compact size and light weight (Current as of December 2010, Source: Tamron). At 15.9 ounces, measuring 3.8 inches in length (from mount face to the tip of the lens), and 2.9 inches in diameter with a filter diameter of Ø62mm, it’s a compact and easy-to-carry lens. Its minimum focal distance of 0.49m (19.3 in) through the entire zoom range and macro capability to 1:3.8 allows you to enjoy serious, high-quality macro photography with unaccustomed convenience.
  • newegg PZD (Piezo Drive) Piezoelectric AF Motor Piezoelectric drive replaces traveling wave energy with more efficient standing wave energy for higher AF performance with less weight and bulk. A vital contributor to compactness, PZD focuses quickly and precisely, assuring sharper results in demanding conditions with speed that captures spontaneous moments crisply - moments that might otherwise be lost to image softness. PZD is exceptionally quiet, making it ideal for nature, live performance shooting, golf and other conditions that demand quiet operation.
  • newegg VC (Vibration Compensation) Tamron’s VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance that eliminates the blur from handheld shots for cleaner, crisper shots.
  • newegg Abundance of Special Glass Materials Two Low Dispersion (LD) glass elements minimize “on-axis aberration” that degrades the sharpness in telephotography and “lateral chromatic aberration”, an image degrading factor in wide-angle photography. In addition, three hybrid aspherical elements are used to compensate distortion.
  • newegg Zoom Lock (ZL) Feature Another original Tamron mechanical engineering concept is the Zoom Lock (ZL), a simple convenience feature that prevents undesired extension of the lens barrel when carrying the camera/lens unit on a neck strap.
  • newegg Digitally Integrated (Di-II) Lens Optimized for APS-C Format Digital SLR Cameras Tamron Di-II lenses are engineered expressly for digital SLR cameras with image sensors commonly referred to as APS-C, measuring approximately 24mm x 16mm. Rendering an ideal image circle for APS-C sensors, Di-II lenses also include properties to optimize digital imaging performance.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat everyday & travel lens

Pros: Good bokeh. Light weight for a 270mm zoon lens. 1/2 the price of the Nikon 18-300mm and lighter weight. Great pictures.

Cons: Sometimes searches a bit to focus.

Other Thoughts: I have been looking for a good all around lens to replace my 18-55 and 55-200 Nikon lenses. This is a great fit. Good quality, compact compared to other lenses in this focal range. I have taken thousands of pictures with this lens since I purchased it. I don't miss shots anymore since I don't need to change lenses.

5 out of 5 eggsimmediate impact!

Pros: It is light in relation to other lens we have tried and we now use this lens exclusively. In low light, without flash, the results have been remarkable. We use a Nikon D-90. The simple lock on the lens is great. We take many pictures (21 grandchildren and lots of events) and the quality of our pictures has improved significantly .

Cons: None that we have found.... Primarily it is our lack of knowledge in using the non automatic features of camera & lens.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Buy!

Pros: Swiss Army Knife Lens takes the place of having two or three lenses for the cost of one Nikkor lens.

Cons: None that I have found

Other Thoughts: I am glad I listened to an experienced photographer, he saved me a bunch of money by recommending this Tamron 18-270mm lens for my Nikon D5100. I returned some locally purchased lenses keeping my kit lens as a backup. I then purchased a Tamron Macro 90mm for 1:1 close ups and a Nikkor 35mm for night shots because it is 1.8

If you are thinking about a 300mm lens, save your money and just crop this 270mm image and you will get the same effect.

This was a great buy for me, saved me a bunch of money an allowed me to buy other lenses that I needed for my interest. As a new photographer I did a lot of research and was fortunate to talk with some experienced folks that wouldn't let me buy junk. I hope my review is of some help to you. Good luck.

5 out of 5 eggsOnly Need One Lens

Pros: Much of the time I'm on my motorcycle with my camera and don't have room for a gadget bag. This is the only lens I have ever needed.

Cons: Zoom creep is a pain I have to put up with.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat's not to like

Pros: I got this lens to replace the original Tamron 18-270 which I loved, and which is now attached to my daughter's camera. I was stoked to learn of a smaller, lighter version of this lens, since I travel a lot for work, and I like to take my camera along. The smaller size and quieter, faster focusing are a definite plus. It's the perfect lens for family and travel shooting. My shots are sharp, and the color is great, and the stabilization really lets me shoot in low light where I would never have tried taking pictures without a tripod in the past. I think if you're looking for a great all round lens, you couldn't go wrong with the Tamron.

Cons: None that I can think of.
