It will do NiCd also but hopefully there aren't many of those left. The LCD displays the battery type (chemistry). The charging progress is monitored with "bars" much like a cell phone field strength. It has a USB charger port also, so you can charge your iPod or iPhone too. Reasonably well made. Cons: Adjusting the contacts for the Li-ion battery is a bit tedious, but doable. Once set it's fine. NiMH batteries get pretty warm while charging so I would be careful what materials are near it while in use. Other Thoughts: I replaced one of those "pinch type" chargers with this and I think this is much better. The old device literally fell apart. This device seems a bit more solid.
