5 out of 5 eggsBought this for my GF's D5100

Pros: Great for DX Nikon cameras, much better than the kit lens. She really likes her 85mm f/1.8, but this zoom gives her good wide angle capability and general flexibility.

f2.8 aperture is nice.

Cons: No VR/IS, but not really needed at 17-50mm.

Other Thoughts: I also have the 17-50mm for Canon EF-S which I used a lot until I moved to full frame.

5 out of 5 eggsVery happy

Pros: Fast maximum aperture
Compact size
Excellent image quality
Price

Cons: Must flick a switch to use manual focus.

Other Thoughts: I had the non-BIM version which was my main lens on my D200, it served me well. I sold it when I went full frame.

I recently bought a D7000 as the 700 was too heavy to carry on hikes. I needed another wide-standard, fast zoom to use as an every day lens so I figured I'd try the new version of the Tamron. The lens is better than I had hoped. There is a lot of talk on the internet about "if you get a good copy" well I've had 2 Tamron 17-50s and both were fantastic.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for low light!

Pros: Great performance in low light - I shoot mostly concert photography. Really fast AF - very dependable.

Cons: Stupid little design thing but I would love to be able to store the shield on the lens while still being able to change focal length, only because I don't always have a good place to store it while shooting in a crowded audience - but thats the same story with all of my lenses...

Other Thoughts: Using with Nikon D80
