Great Little Flash! Just Get One.
Pros: Excellent flash, I have used three of them for years now. It's compact and light, it is reliable and it can take a drop onto concrete and keep working. It folds up small. It recharges within 4 seconds or less with eneloop batteries and will go all day. (I typically run it -1,-2 stops so it cycles/lasts faster/longer.) The controls are easy to use/understand but I control it with the camera settings. The built-in diffuser is OK but I strongly suggest the Sto-Fen diffuser made for this flash + a bit of gaffer tape. (Remove the diffuser outdoors if necc.)
Cons: My main gripe is that it has no locking pin in the shoe mount. It relies on a threaded collar ring to stay in place with friction and this will work its way loose over time and you will get underpowered flashes until you push it forward again and retighten. Second gripe is that the Ready light is extremely bright and stays on or blinks constantly which is a problem at night. I covered mine with black gaffer tape with a few pin holes so I can still see the indicator. Simple fix. Last minor gripe would be no swivel, but the flash doesn't stick up enough for this to be as effective as a larger/taller flash anyway. Lastly, I wish it worked with Pocket Wizards but alas, it doesn't. Bummer.
Other Thoughts: I use three of these all the time on a G12, 5D, 30D, 40D and 60D. I have a Sto-Fen Diffuser on two with one using an amber gel, a third as-is w/o diffuser for more power/reach usually outdoors. In most situations, the diffuser is a key part. Get it. Most of my photography is journalism/candid lifestyle indoor/outdoor in all kinds of conditions. Wide to mid reach lenses. This flash is great for fill on faces, short range bounce, etc. It's not meant to replace a large 580 flash, it's an improvement over pop-up flash and provides a nice small flash on FF cameras that is less obtrusive and doesn't get in the way. If you don't get good results with this flash, rethink how you use flash. Most people misunderstand how flash should be used and expect too much. This flash isn't meant to light a large group, a big hall or reach 50 feet. It's best within 10-12 feet to fill shadows on faces, etc. At [$] you can't go wrong and if it takes a hit and dies, it's cheap to replace.
