Retaining the impressive optical performance and large aperture of the original EF 85mm f/1.2L USM, this new medium telephoto lens uses a Ring-type USM, high-speed CPU and optimized algorithms to achieve an autofocus speed approximately 1.8x faster than the original. The high-speed AF and circular aperture create a shallow depth-of-field that brings attention to the subject and blurs the background, which is ideal for portraits and weddings. The floating optical system, which includes an aspherical lens element, suppresses aberrations and ensures excellent imaging performance.

5 out of 5 eggsBest of the best!!

Pros: This is my favorite lens for 3 years now. Picture quality and bokeh is beautiful! Always on one of my camera.

Cons: hard to catch focus in non pro camera body like 5d, works nice with professional focusing system, I use it with 1ds Mark III.
It got so expensive now..

Other Thoughts: bout it for $1754 in June 2008..

5 out of 5 eggsTrinity of Portrait

Pros: 35f1.4L, 85f1.2L, 135F2L - these are the Trinity of Canon lenses. There is no better portrait lens made, period. Due to the depth of field, pairing it with a 5dmkii, 50d or 7d is HIGHLY recommended - micro focus adjustments will allow you to calibrate the optics to your camera body.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Camera-tech comes and goes, but photography is really just about light. That’s why you should buy the best lenses you can afford. They will probably last longer than you.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: It's a 1.2 L series... I have this on a 5DMKII... every photo is a postcard... every single one. Can't detect any vignetting, absolutely gorgeous and precise chromatics. Slap this baby on Canon's new series T1i/T2i/5DMKII with ISO > 3200 you can see in the almost absolute darkness.

Cons: Although it's not designed for sports, a little faster would be nice. Models tend to move quickly sometimes..

Other Thoughts: I recommend putting on the hood for almost all lens...

Like all lens, to truly get the absolute most out of a lens really is in the hands of the photographer... if you know what you're doing, you won't be disappointed. This is designed mostly for portrait / single subject shots, not landscape... as someone had previously said... of course you will be a bit more disappointed if that's what you're using it for.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Lens!

Pros: bokeh, clarity, color, contrast, sharp image

Cons: heavy, more care to mount/dismount than other lenses due to the glass at rear of lens

Other Thoughts: Worth the money!

3 out of 5 eggsDefective lens

Pros: Beautiful lens.

Cons: There was a small bubble in the glass of the rearmost element. Again, Canon quality control, what gives?

Other Thoughts: Newegg gave me an RMA and then a full refund, quickly.

1 out of 5 eggsSevere Frontfocus

Pros: Beautiful Bokeh, excellent color

Cons: Canon quality control, my copy of 85L has a front-focus problem it's off by almost an inch at close distances

Other Thoughts: Canon needs to get it together - this is almost a $2000 L lens!!! Now I am wasting my time sending this lens back to newegg for replacement and hoping I will get a good copy!

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing lens!!!

Pros: This lens is crazy! Bokehness is beautiful specially when taking pictures of children. This lens is worth every penny! Newegg delivered it less than 24 hrs wow!

Cons: It doesn't come with a UV filter jk! None!

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this lens to other 5D2 shooters out there, you will love it!

5 out of 5 eggscanon's best

Pros: Its fast. f1.2. bokeh is amazing. colors and contrast are also to die for. I have 17-40/4L, 24-70/2.8L and 70-200/2.8L IS and i haven't taken off the 85/1.2L since i purchased it. The sharpness from f/1.8 to f/11 is ridiculous and addicting.

Cons: Slow AF (even slower in low light, when f/1.2 to f/2 come in handy), heavy as a elephant.

Other Thoughts: My favorite lens by far, its worth physically moving instead of zooming to get just awesome quality out of your lens.

5 out of 5 eggsThe perfect Portrait Lens

Pros: Super Bokeh
Great lens hood
Too many clients!!
Super low light event lens
Best portrait lens for women and girls ever made
Shoot outside at night with no tripod at 3200 ISO!
Amazing looking photos that say professional all over them.
Along with my Canon 135 F2 lens the finest portrait lens in the world!
Sharp wide open in the center with wonder halo effect around outside
Sharp edge to edge by F2.0

Cons: Price
Heavy! 1,025 Grams
Exposed rear element
Removal procedure (1 manual focus, 2 focus to infinity, 3 camera Off)
Battery Hog!! I only get 300 - 360 shots or so with Canon 40D
Install procedure (carefully line up without seeing red dot and protect rear element)
Some CA (Chromatic Aberration) wide open totally gone when stopped down to 1.8 not an issue with most portrait photos

Other Thoughts: I now have too many clients because of this lens and no longer have time to update or make changes to my review so I took all of it off except this intro and the pros and cons. Also I now have to supply my clients with a photographers release as most places say a pro must have shot these you must have a photographers release. These are great problems I never had before purchasing this lens.

Lens I currently own:
Canon EF-S 17-55 F/2.8 IS Ultra sharp, great colors, great low light, poor zoom action
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Rebel XTi Kit lens Muddy, slow, pile of junk
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L Fantastic colors, pretty sharp, buttery smooth zoom, light weight
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L Fantastic colors and contrast, sharp, buttery smooth zoom, heavy!
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Good budget portrait lens, light weight, disposable
Canon EF 85mm F/1.2 L II The best portrait lens I own, , buttery smooth Bokeh, heavy and expensive it shares sharpness with 135mm
Canon EF 135mm F/2.0 L A gre
