The EF17-40mm f/4L USM is an ultra wide angle Canon EF zoom lens meant for professional and high amateur SLR EOS camera users. While it is an excellent lens when used with an analog SLR camera, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is especially well suited for digital SLR cameras with an imaging sensor size smaller than the 35mm format. Indeed on such digital SLR cameras these focal lengths can give an angle of view approximately equivalent to that of a 28-70mm lens used on a 35mm camera, which makes it the ideal standard zoom lens.
The EF17-40mm f/4L USM has 12 lens elements arranged in 9 groups. Super Spectra Coating on the elements ensures excellent color balance and minimizes ghosting and flare. To provide superb image quality over a 17-40mm zoom range the lens uses three aspheric elements of two different types, while Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass is used to prevent the chromatic aberrations that often can degrade the subject edge clarity.
Minimum focusing distance is just 28mm throughout the entire zoom range. The Auto-focus works silently and quickly thanks to a fast central processing unit with an improved AF algorithm. You can override AF mode with manual focus should you wish. Controlled by an electromagnetic diaphragm, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM's circular aperture can achieve a more attractive appearance to out of focus background areas in a picture. The front of the lens does not rotate as you focus. This means, for example, that polarizing filters still function effectively as you zoom in and out. At the rear of the lens there's a drop-in gelatin filter holder. Highly resistant to moisture and dust, the EF17-40mm f/4L USM is ideally suited for use in harsh environments. Environment friendly lead-free glass is used throughout its construction.
Pros: I have been shooting for over 15 years, I have a 28-135 IS & 50mm f1.8, both are good lenses, but this L glass will make you never want to put your camera down. I am in love...truely. This lens gets lower reviews than other L glass i guess because they wanted to make it affordable. It's opened my eyes to new possibities
Cons: f4 :o( it needs light to be really effective. this isnt a huge problem but i would love it to be 2.8, of course it would be priced in the $1K+ range like its brother the 16-35mm 2.8L
Other Thoughts: to see examples from this lens go to dot com, click imagery. It helps me be a better photographer

great outdoor lens

Pros: I use this lens for outdoor shots and have no real problems with f4. If one were going to use indoors or lower light levels they would want the f2 or lower. I get great, clear crisp shots
Cons: none

Pros: I've been a photographer for over 20 years, not that years make anyone any good, but, I've seen gear come and go.....I don't want to see this lens go any time soon.
It's simply awesome.
I've been reluctant to get the wide L's for a while, well, you know how long. Canon's zooms are stunning, however, I hadn't read any reviews which stated what I was looking for in a wide. That of low lens flair, nice bokeh, sturdy and pin sharp...kinda like that perfect job - where you sleep in your own bed all day, party all night and get paid for simply existing...hard to find.
I'm so glad I didn't take any of the "experts" too seriously when it came to swapping out my 'pond marinaded' wide sigma.
This lens ticks all the boxes for me; I'm amazed it's only $699, and more than a little surprised to find it in stock on newegg rather than anyone else. I'm not a great fan of the Egg...it hurts to compliment them. :-)
The lens is perfect...for my needs.
Now to find that job....
Cons: It doesn't come with a free massage.
Other Thoughts: I have so many thoughts, although, none pertinent to this lens.
World hunger, I'm-a-dinner-jacket's atomic ambitions (I think he's over compensating for being a bit of a botty bandit), how to move some of my belly fat to my upper torso and derier...the list goes on.....
I guess if the mensa club of Iran succeed with their bomb, I have a lens wide enough to get the whole mushroom cloud in view, but, I'm gonna have trouble with the lighting.....it's gonna get bright I'm thinking.
Off to get some factor 50,000 sun cream....and then to AmericanAirlines.com for a ticket to the 'Mental East'...
Have a good one!

Durable and Precise

Pros: I bought this lens with an xti body, avoiding the kit lens, on the advice of an insider in a large photo dealer (I usually buy from NewEgg but this time went over to the dark side). Pros: the price, the quality, the sharpness and durability. It has all that a quality lens could offer and maybe even more. I bought this Canon "L" series lens because I was going to be shooting in Dubai and Egypt for a corporation's publication and advertising. I had ruined more than one camera shooting in locales near deserts (unbelievable how fine that sand gets), my last being a Minolta film camera and auto-focus telefoto lens sacrificed to the Takla Makan desert in western China. I had fears about the new Canon, since I paid over my mental budget and did not want to sacrifice it to the desert sands. Joyfully, it survived two sandstorms and the dust and pollution of Cairo without a mark (I kept a filter on the front at all times). A polarizing filter helped to cut through the haze considerably.
Cons: The usual: it is heavier than some of the more compact lenses, I miss the telephoto range, I would like a faster aperature. None of these thing matter considering the advantage of taking my camera without fear from desert to jungle to the REALLY challenging weather of a Brooklyn Spring.
Other Thoughts: The lens performs well indoors and out, no problem using a primitive 220EX flash with a diffuser. I don't use the lens hood so I can't comment on vignetting. Sharpness apparent when I enlarge a shot on PhotoShop--who needs a telephoto?
