This lens does what many pros thought couldn't be done - replace the previous L-series 28-70 f/2.8 lens with something even better. Extended coverage to an ultra-wide angle 24mm makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever.
Pros: The best lens that has ever been attached to my DSLR, and I've rented most of canon's current line by now. Unreal sharpness, hyper-fast and almost completely silent auto focus. This lens can nearly see in the dark with a fast ISO speed. With a range of 36-112mm in 35mm equivalent on a 1.6x camera like the 20D, this lens goes from just wider than 'normal' to a moderate zoom. An absolutely FANTASTIC portrait lens since you can get close to your subject, open it up and get a great bokeh, or back off and get a good zoom to flatten out the face a touch. This lens, when I borrowed it from a buddy, was the lens that infected me with L-sickness.
Cons: Yeah, it's heavy but you get used to it quickly. When I put my 50mm prime onto the body it feels too light now.
Other Thoughts: Putting IS onto this lens would make it heavier and probably larger (it probably uses most of its diameter to get the f/2.8). However if canon could keep this a 2.8 lens, put IS into it, and not sacrifice any of the quality of the lens what they would have is the world's ultimate SLR lens. You'd only ever take it off the camera for special circumstances.
One other nuance about the lens: it zooms backwards from the 'normal' method. The lens grows as it zooms out. This is a really kinda cool and the included lens hood doesn't move when you zoom, which is nifty.

Worth every stinkin penny

Comments: I have owned this lens for about 3 months now and I can confidently say that, no matter what type of shooter you are, you will immediately fall in love with this lens. Very good color, contrast, super-solid build. Doubles as a semi-macro (~0.25x). My only complaint is actually not about the lens but rather the lens pouch. The price of this lens should warrant a better lens pouch, something like that of the 180mm macro. But ah well, this lens practically "lives" on my camera anyway, so I have never used the pouch.

Got one of the bad ones

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Newegg made the return process as painless as could be expected. Thank you New Egg!
Cons: The lens arrived very poorly packaged. When I picked it up on the porch, I could feel the lens flopping all around inside - which caused some damage to the lens box. The lens itself looked ok, but it wouldn't take pictures worth anything. "Soft" would be doing it great justice! And there was also a grinding sound in the zoom ring. Paid for overnight shipping... newegg is taking care of the return shipping costs, but it is ups ground. This means it will probably be 7 - 10 days before I get the replacement.
Other Thoughts: When (if) I get a good copy, I know this will be an awesome lens!

Pros: Perfect, perfect, great lens for all time
Cons: Heavy...that's not a "Con". That just an alert for strobist with weak hands and shoulders
Other Thoughts: Even better yet, I bought it from Newegg when it just came back in stock at an unbelievable price--1199. As for Newegg, there is no better.
