5 out of 5 eggsThe standard

Pros: Clarity, bokeh, fast lens, L glass, very little barrel distortion or chromatic aberration.

Cons: NOT weather sealed.

Other Thoughts: On a full frame this makes a great portrait lens as well as a sports/nature/BIF lens, as 70mm I find to be the most useful in the studio. Keep in mind it is not an IS so keep it on a tripod below 1/500. Also, the IS version is weather sealed but this one is not...

5 out of 5 eggsWOW

Pros: IQ is out of this world. No real need to buy the IS version if you use mono/tri in low light. Ive shot all day long with it and had no problems.

Cons: Its a bit heavy. But if you buy a decent camera strap and take the weight off your neck then it can be a carry all day.

Other Thoughts: This was my first venture into L glass. I will never look back as the IQ between this lens and my Tamaron 28-270 is so unbelievable. FredMirand rates this lens very highly.
No regrets what so ever.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome - A Canon Standard

Pros: I've had this lens for over a year now without issue. Canon L series. Can't beat it. Canon glass is the best in the industry. I've been shooting Canon body and lenses since 1980.

Lens is quality build. Fast f-stop for great higher speed indoor sports shots. Mounted on Canon 7D. Tack sharp. Super fast focus. Image stabilization is great when you have a slower shutter speed.

Cons: Heavy, but shows the quality build. Get a monopod or your arms will get a real workout by the end of the day.

Other Thoughts: As in other reviews, Newegg really needs to look at their shipping process. My box was really beat up and the packaging inside the box was less than adequate to protect such a high priced item.

In May 2010, I just purchased the 7D with lens kit and the Canon 580 flash. Same issue. Box had been opened. You could easily see the cut marks in the tape. The 7D box had been opened and the battery and charger were taken. But again, the entire contents were POORLY packaged. I RMA'd the order and had them reship the 7D kit. Second time was much better. Newegg return process was seamless, but it cost me a weekend photo shot.

Newegg... if you actually read these reviews, PLEASE review your shipping quality. When customers order thousands of dollars in high quality product, they expect to get it in tact, not in a box that is poorly protected and looks like it was used as a soccer ball in the warehouse.

Pros: Great Lense at a great Price.. even came with a Hood..I use with a 2x converter and double this lenses abilities..Excellent for the money..

Cons: No Image Stabilizer with this lense which is why it is less than the other Tele-photo lenses of compatible size.

5 out of 5 eggsPhotojournalist Lens

Pros: This lens is sharp, its clear, and its accurate. Very little chromatic abrasion, and very true to details. I find this lens to be of a nice weight, expecially compared to the IS version

Cons: The white color is a bit odd, but if your shooting a sporting or political event you'll fit right in with all the other Canon users.

Other Thoughts: I used the IS and non-IS version, and greatly prefer the non-IS... save yourself some money and get this lighter lens.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent sports lens

Pros: It's an awesome lens. Extremely sharp - rivals prime lenses. f/2.8 is a big help is freezing action.

Cons: This one doesn't have Image Stabilization, but that's fine. Unless you're shooting in dim lighting, this will work fine without IS.

Other Thoughts: Go to a sporting event and try to NOT find one of these lenses. Some shoot the 300mm or 400mm lenses, but this one does an awesome job.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent image quality, sharp pictures with remarkable color and contrast

Cons: Big and heavy!

Other Thoughts: I bought this lens from Newegg as an opened box item...therefore I knew there was a certain element of risk in the purchase. I couldn't be happier with it! It came with everything, lens caps, hood, tripod ring and carrying pouch. It works perfectly. This is a great lens!

5 out of 5 eggsgreat, fast, sharp lens

Pros: f/2.8!

Cons: Heavy and white. Hard to be subtle with this beast.

Other Thoughts: I bought this (unfortunately before Newegg carried them) for taking photos in poorly-lit gyms of my daughter's volleyball games. I'd originally bought the f/4L lens and found most gyms are a bit too cave-like. With f/2.8 I could stop the action and not have to push the exposure. If I were doing outdoor shots, I'd prefer the f/4L. Both lenses are very sharp, vivid and well built.
