A thoroughly modern design that's optimized for select Canon EOS digital SLRs. Its angle of view is equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, with a floating optical system that can focus down to full life-size (1: 1) magnification. Inner focusing, driven by a silent and powerful ring-type USM, means the lens' overall length never changes during focus. This lens is a wonderful multi-purpose lens that's equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits or available-light photos.
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Super-sharp, fast (F2.8) lens. Nice bokeh, fast USM focus, full-time manual. Compact, build quality.
Cons: Overlaps with the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 (which almost everyone has) for portrait work. Price. EF-S format may not be around forever.
Other Thoughts: I got this macro lens for my 300D almost a year ago. It's by FAR my sharpest lens. It's great for portraits as well as macro work. When the 1.6x crop multiplication is a factor (which it is if you are considering this EF-S lens) then it's roughly equivalent to the 100mm macro EF lens. I find that the 100mm macro is too much for a 1.6 crop camera.

Great Macro/Portrait lens
Reviewed By: John on 7/20/2006
Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: VERY sharp lens - fast, quiet USM focus w/full time manual - excellent depth of field
Cons: Autofocus "hunts" occassionally
Other Thoughts: I got this lens to supplement the kit lens that came with my Rebel XT. After using it for shots of my toddler at the beach and seeing the quality, crispness and oh-my-gosh amazing depth of field, I decided this lens is staying on the camera! It provides fantastic portrait-style shots with great DOF as well as very crisp macro capabilities with amazing DOF. Have I mentioned the amazing depth of field?
Lens is solid with a good feel to it. USM autofocus is very quick and quiet.
Consider this a "must have" lens for your set!

Pros: Affordable, Cheap (as far as quality lenses go). This lens is as sharp as some L glass for a fraction of the cost. USM for all time manual focus. Great for product photography, insects, and portraits. Great bokeh. Can focus to infinity.
Cons: 60mm x 1.6 (ASP-C crop) = 96mm. Great for medium telephoto but not great as a walk-around.
Other Thoughts: Canon recently announced a new macro lens with IS. Maybe wait for that to come around...

great macro and portrait lens
Reviewed By: goeslikethis on 9/15/2008
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: A true 1:1 macro lens. Very sharp. This focal length works beautifully as a portrait lens too. Nice bokeh at f2.8.
There's real-time manual focus or you can use the manual/auto switch.
Takes inexpensive 52mm filters. The front does not rotate when focusing so circular polarizers are easy to use.
Lightweight and small makes it great for traveling. So small, that you can use the on-camera flash for macro shots without the lens getting in the way and casting a shadow!
Cons: EF-S mount so it won't work on full frame bodies. Sometimes autofocus gets VERY confused and hunts a lot (you should use manual focus for macro instead).
Other Thoughts: 60 mm is too short a focal length for photographing insects - you get too close to the subject and it flies away. If you like hunting bugs then you should consider a longer focal length lens that will give the same magnification from a greater distance.

WoW

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Newegg pricing-Great Macro Lens for beginners-Compact Size
Cons: None yet
Other Thoughts: My wife and I just purchased a EOS Rebel XSi and we took our son to the local botantical gardens here in FL. WoW is the word I would use about this lens. Got some great close ups of insects and flowers. Also used it for some action shots of my son running in the grass on the sport setting shooting 3.5 fps. Awesome clarity and the AF(Auto Focus) was dead on. If you are new to Macro shooting, I would have this lens in your line-up. My hats off to the newegg crew...job well done.
