5 out of 5 eggsGood Photo Editor

Pros: This is a very good photo editor for the price. I use it in conjunction with Lightroom 3 mainly when I have to make complex selections. I have been using it with absolutely no problems on a Windows 7 64 bit system.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsAdobe PE 9

Pros: Pretty good editor - at least for the basic stuff I do. Really liked the magic etaser and cloner.

Cons: Won't print. It list my printer then tell me I have to install a printer to print. What good is a program that refuses to print. I have reinstalled many times. If you have Win7 X64 DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!

Other Thoughts: I run Win 7 X64. Maybe thats the problem. Adobe suport is non existent.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor Macintosh Experience

Pros: Very powerful tools at a low price - 90% of full photoshop for 10% of the cost.

Cons: Non-standard, inconsistent, frustrating user interface.

Other Thoughts: On a Macintosh, if you use multiple monitors and/or Spaces... expect to be frustrated to the point of baldness.

The screen monopolizing interface looks slick, but is annoying to work with. Sometimes I *need* to be able to see background information.

Trying to work with other Apps at the same time (eg iPhoto) routinely results in PSE going into a state where it can't be switched to: Cmd-tab doesn't work, and the UI disappears so you can't click on it, and clicking on the dock icon switches to another application.

Ocasionally the menus, including the quit item, are all grayed out - requiring a Force Quit. (at least you can Cmd-S to save your work)

While I respect the cross-platform standardized interface, I wish it would work a lot better than it does.

Having said all of that, it's hard to beat the power for the price. So at least for now, I will use it because I have to.

1 out of 5 eggsFull of design flaws

Pros: When it is working, it does let you edit photos, make slide shows, and manage your catalogs.

Cons: Everything else. I put it on Win7 x64. Worked two or three times, then froze. After that the editor would not launch even after reinstall. Spent hours with tech support (outsourced, of course) and got it working again by clearing the registry and leftover files in the app folders. And then it crashed again, same symptoms. More time with tech support. I've had 3 tickets opened, and what a surprise, when they reach a month old tech support closes them to make their metrics look good!

Catalogs do not like changes such as replacing drives or changing drive letters. If you do that, the metadata keeps insisting you are pointing it to the wrong file. Did their tech support program that feature?

It also relentlessly wants you to enter email addresses. I'm not sure why I have to do that to edit photos, but it's pretty insistent.

Other Thoughts: Memory management is atrocious. If you want to use large images in a slide show, you must shut down everything else (including the PE9 editor) and manually assign it more RAM. Then maybe, just maybe, you will get an error-free run.

The problems I have seen should have been found in alpha testing. Adobe should be ashamed of themselves for shipping this piece of trash.

I'm done with this software and going back to PE5, which works fine in x64 and doesn't harass me to divulge email addresses. The effort to rebuild all my catalogs will be worth it for my piece of mind.

1 out of 5 eggsExpensive Software Sales Catalog

Pros: Still looking.

Cons: Seems every process that I attempt to use requires an update/download/expensive piece of additional Adobe software or an online connection and account, even the help function. The useful album feature formerly included in the freebie Photoshop Album is not included. It lacks the detailed photo editing capabilities of Photoshop Business Edition 1.0. Organization capability is no better than the software that came with my camera or my printer or one of the online print services. Disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is a great online retailer. My bad for this purchase.

2 out of 5 eggsMac GIF animation doesn't work

Pros: Long list of features, some of these actually work.

Cons: I purchased this product primarily to produce Animated GIFs on my iMac. I read the product description completely, visited the Adobe site and examined the features in detail, then I purchased the product.

Upon installation, I discovered a flaw in the Mac version of the animated GIF software. Note: the PC version does not have this flaw. Animated GIFs should allow for animated speeds of 0.1, 0.2. 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 seconds per frame. Only 0.1 and 0.2 work on the Mac. I removed 1 egg from my rating due to faulty software.

I called Adobe tech support and had a lovely 2 hour conversation with broken enlish chinese woman. My trouble call was upped in priority three times while I held on the line. At the end, tech support did reproduce the problem on their computers and confirmed to me that there was indeed a flaw in the software (their words, not mine).

Tech support promised that they would contact me with a follow up. It never happened. I removed 2 eggs for them lying to me.

Other Thoughts: My grief is very specific to Animated GIFs and running Photoshop Elements on a Mac. If you do not care about Animated GIFs and/or run on a PC, you may have a different experience.

For me, I am very disappointed with Adobe for selling a product with a known defect. I am very disappointed with Adobe technical support for not honoring their promise to get back to me. This is not a proper way to conduct business.

5 out of 5 eggsMore Features than 2.0

Pros: Amazing! Plenty of features that compare to the full version with real-time filters, layer effects control, masks and more. New wand selection tools, new custom shape tools, background removal tool

Cons: No slice tool, still not CMYK compatible

Other Thoughts: I have been using Photshop Elements 2.0 for about 7 years now and always wondered what Adobe was adding to the newer versions. Everything I needed and more.... The interface is a bit different but some of the controls from the Full version have been added, so its worth getting used to. For example: Ctrl+' turns the grid on and off, Ctrl+mouse can select multiple layers and group/merge, Ctrl+Alt+Z to undo...

5 out of 5 eggsGood stuff

Pros: Adobe makes good stuff. Its that simple.

Cons: none yet.

Other Thoughts: There is a learning curve to touching up photos. My wife uses this for cleaning and cropping photos on her MAC for scrapbooking and art journal type stuff. Loves it.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't like 64 bit OS

Pros: Works as designed on my 32 bit system. Elements has always been a great program

Cons: It refuses to install on my Win 7 64 bit system. Gives error. Lots of suggestions one the internet to get it to work, none seem to work. Including the ones from Adobe. I am sure it is an OS problem but it is extremely frustrating to pay money for a program and not be able to use it. There should be a disclaimer somewhere.
