4 out of 5 eggsCorel PaintShop Pro X6 - Reasonable Cost Photo Editing

Pros: - Inexpensive on Sale.
- Has Many Quick Editing Tools.
- Has Many of the Same Tools as Photoshop for Editing.

Cons: - Screen Layout is quirky.
- Can't page through the que'd photos quickly.
- Can't adjust the resolution of the edited images easily.
- Doesn't have lens compensation feature that I can find.
- Doesn't have light type compensation feature that I can find.

Other Thoughts: I had Adobe Photoshop CS that I used for many years but I lost the install disc. When I built a couple new laptops I didn't want to clone the HDD so I installed a new OS and programs. Lost the Photoshop CS.

I needed a photo editing program and this Corel PaintShop Pro X6 was on sale so I decided to try it out for under US$20. I was pleasantly surprised.

The GUI is different than Adobe and the tools are more limited. Things like the number of brushes, the typefaces, the scripts, and the file saving options are not as broad as the Adobe Photoshop suite. I paid less than 10% of what I would have to pay for Adobe Photoshop. I'm willing to accept the more limited tools for that price.

Is this software good enough for professional users who make their living in this field? No, I don't think so. As far as I can tell, there are no special add-ons to allow for image compensation for particular cameras/lenses. There is only a basic tool set for most of the image adjustment features. I could not find an adjustment for lightsource compensation (to take the yellowness out of the image from fluorescent lights). I downloaded all the updates and still couldn't find those features. I am still checking if there are others available for this version of the program.

There is a newer version of this program (Corel PaintShop Pro X7) and a Corel PaintShop Pro Ultimate version. I have not purchased or evaluated either of these programs. The spec sheets indicate there are more features for the Ultimate version.

For most casual users who just want to retouch some photos, reduce redeye, change the image size, or switch out the backgrounds, this program is perfectly adequate. It has all those features readily accessible.

If you get this program on sale at Newegg for under US$20, it is a great deal.

1 out of 5 eggsCan't get it to run!

Pros: PSP - very capable, I've owned several versions going way back to JASC days. Ah... Way way back! I had it on a W95 computer. ;)

Cons: I bought this last week and installed it w/o error on my W7 computer. But it crashes immediately. Don't know why, but it's literally unusable.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Price and Value

Pros: It's comparable to Adobe Photoshop Elements, but it has the advantage of 64-bit capability. It has layers and some other advanced features.

Cons: Unlike Elements, Paintshop doesn't appear to accept most brands of add-ons. One Nik add-on is included but my Nik suite wouldn't work with Paintshop. I already use Elements and I noticed that photos processed in Paintshop have their own unique file type and wouldn't open in Elements 10, so I quit using Paintshop. Corel doesn't specify which add-ons will or won't work in Paintshop.

Other Thoughts: Paintshop should be okay if you want it to be your only photo editing software and if you don't need to install any add-ons. Corel doesn't specify which add-ons will or won't work with Paintshop Pro.

3 out of 5 eggsNOT user friendly

Pros: cheap

Cons: not easy to use

Other Thoughts: Just to hard to understand, the advertisement suggest it was easy to use but it is not. We got several tech friends together and they still had problems figuring out how to use it, would not recommend even if it a lot cheaper than the $30 we paid.

4 out of 5 eggsNeeded to replace my photo editing app from last century.

Pros: The learning curve is pretty gradual and I felt comfortable with the tools they provide pretty quickly. I just do basic photo editing and had been using (don't laugh) Microsoft PictureIt! 2.0 from 1999. It aged surprisingly well but began to have difficulty opening large picture files - including cell phone images. It was time for something new so I downloaded the trial of PaintShop Pro X6 after reading a shoot-out style review of photo editing applications. I liked it right away and decided to get it, especially after finding it for such a great price (due to a promo code)on Newegg. It is a nice bonus that it is available as both a 32bit and 64bit application.

Cons: The frequency of the auto-save is driving me crazy. The application will not continue to work while auto-save is active. I have yet to find away to adjust it. Fortunately, you can hit ESC while it is happening to cancel the auto-save

Other Thoughts: I am still learning and have referred to the tutorials and videos frequently. Corel also has pretty useful forums, where customers can assist each other and share tips and offer advice.

1 out of 5 eggsPSP downhil

Pros: Might be great if you are comparing it to adobe.

Cons: Paint Shop pro used to be a light, quick, simple to use alternative to MSpaint. PSP v4 was very intuitive and wasn't a behemoth to load and use. I still use PSP4 on win7 however it does have some display issues. Since Corel took this over it has grown fat, clumsy, far from intuitive and way more than most users are interested in working with. Yes the have an extensive tutorial. They have to. The thing is so clumsy to use that you'll need to sit for hours just to learn how to accomplish the simplest of tasks. When they pay me $29 for this app then MAYbe I'll try it again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Program

Pros: Easy to install. (Windows 8.1); Easy to navigate; Outstanding Tutorials (Both video and written); Very Powerful (I'm not a professional photographer)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have been looking for a photo editing program that does more than red eye repair and making birthday cards. I have tried several very notable programs costing from $50 the very expensive costing several hundred dollars. The cheaper ones are just that, cheap The very expensive programs are probably outstanding in the hands of a professional photographer, but they are cumbersome and too time consuming to learn for your average hobbyist. Corel Paint Shop Pro X6 is simply outstanding. It's greatest attributes: 1.) Built in tutorials and guides explaining both concepts and methods. 2) Easy to understand interface. 3) A lot of very powerful features that will always be more than I could ever use,.

I got it for $29 on a Newegg Super Saver Deal....worth every nickel...
