- Pros: Still simple to use and works quite well for my Windows boxes. I had a goof with activation and tech support remoted into my machine and corrected the problem without aggravation.
- Cons: If you swap out external drives (like to carry one off site) the system will issue confusing and misleading messages. Apparently the backups are still working but you have to clear several messages when you plug in the new drive. That rated the loss of an egg.
- Other Thoughts: How cool would it be if it backed up to an FTP site like Ghost 14? And how about if it would restore to a different computer like Backup Exec 8.5? For most people this is going to be a really useful program. There are some pro features that you may want to look at.
ok for just windows
- Pros: Fairly easy to use interface
- Cons: Does not fully support Linux, although this product has the ability to allow you to manipulate Linux partitions you can not back them up with this software. I know that the specs didn't say it is for Linux, but it is a big disappointment when you see functionality to do Linux partitioning...yet...you can't back them up. Being a software engineer, I don't think that it is logical to implement Linux partition manipulation interface and yet have no means to backup those Linux partitions. But, that's just my opinion. So, they get 1 egg off for that.
- Other Thoughts: Also, Norton Tech Support was poor IMHO. It took 5 webchats and 2 phone calls to finally get 1 person who knew it did not fully support Linux data management and storage. This was disappointing, being that it costs more than other backup tools that work with both MS and Linux data. Norton's answer for me to have a tool to handle Linux data was for me to go spend more $s and buy their latest Ghost tool. I went and bought their competitor's software for less money and was happier with the product and technical support from the competitor.
This experience (and experience with other Symantec software) will make me think twice about ever purchasing their products both because of what has been for me a poor technical support experience and a software seemingly released with only a partially implemented Linux partition and data handling functionality.
I only use this now on a Windows-based gaming rig that has non-essential data.
- Pros: Set and forget. Works with a number of USB external hard drives.
I've used the restore feature on this product twice now. I once recovered a catastrophic drive failure on a system that took me 6 hours to originally load. The lady in accounting would have quit if she had to re-enter several months of work. The restore only took about 20 minutes.
To my surprise, tech support was helpful the first time I needed to restore.
- Cons: A little complicated on the first use. I should have read all the directions. Hardly a con.
- Other Thoughts: Be VERY wary of the recovery CD. It is supposed to boot and launch the recovery tool. A couple of the systems I tried this on did not boot. The directions caution about this and have a test to see if your machine will boot. Don't lose the CD!
As mentioned above, this product is not Ghost. Come to think of it, Ghost isn't Ghost anymore! ;-)
