5 out of 5 eggsIt works very well now

Pros: Low overhead, runs fine in the background on a minimum duel core. Seems to be getting better with every release. I've been using it a long time and the early releases really sucked and didn't work on several configurations. Mostly we use it on XP Professional 32bit or Windows 7 64bit and it seems to do a very good job and is much lower overhead then some of the others we have tried. For Corporate use I know of nothing better. But I certainly would not want to run any versions before 11.0.5000...
My Current version is 11.0.5002.333
Have it on over 400 machines.

Cons: Pricey

Other Thoughts: I have heard there may be issues with Windows 7 Home editions but I don't have any direct knowledge.

4 out of 5 eggsSEP is a decent product

Pros: We switched from Nod32 4.0.4xx after reporting numerous bugs (since 2.5) yet support being unwilling to fix them. We ran about 100 PCs on SEP 11.0.3 for a year, the rest on Nod32. There were some problems with the initial versions, but as of it is a really nice product. I can configure users or stations to block certain sites, record all writes to USB drives, block read and or write to external drives, and have full firewall rules writing at my disposal. With nod32 and over 600 PCs, I was constantly dealing with issues due to bugs in the product. Symantec is just set it and forget it. Unlike Nod32, Symantec can actually remotely clean up infections consistently. This is a benefit when your stations are all over the place and you have no remote access to them. Using GUP, I just say all my SERVER* PCs are mirrors and clients learn which are local automatically and fail over to remote ones if needed. So simple.

Cons: Nod32 let me schedule anything I could script, such as calls to %comspec% to make registy changes, wget files, install them. Symantec does not without the additional NAC product. I have the Enterprise edition of SEP, which costs a bit more and comes with NAC as well as many other things. You do have to pay more for this.

It does use more resources than Nod32. It eats about 1GB of disk space in total after a few pattern file downloads. But it doesn't slow down the system as bad as previous versions did. It seems to be just as quick as with Nod32, as long as you have enough RAM.

The 64BIT support is better in 11.0.5, but there still is no command line nor GUI way to do an on demand folder scan, nor scan a removable drive on demand. (It does do realtime scan, though.)

Other Thoughts: There seems to be a lot of false information in the reviews on Newegg. It is unclear if these reviewers are running the ancient 11.0.0 version and do not go to fileconnect and download the latest version which is much more stable.

You can install the product with just the antivirus. You can create install packages with many combination's of the various products. Our servers only run the Antivirus. We had a Win7 beta build of 11.0.4 which had AV as well as the Firewall, but no threat protection. As of 11.0.5, Win7 is supported with all these features.

Getting ahold of Symantec support is rather time consuming. eSet Nod32 drags you on for months admitting they have defects but refusing to fix them. However it didn't take 2 hours to get ahold of eSet. Symantec actually fixes their problems, though it does time for them to do so.

We have over 600 PC's on this software, and have been using it for 3 years now. We will continue with it for the foreseeable future.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Product

Pros: Catches viruses (Sometimes)

Cons: This is the worst product I have ever used. The Admin console relies on Java (until the most recent update you had to use an outdated Sun Java version with security flaws) Is exceedingly slow in the admin console, forget about doing anything useful on a wan link. Certain features kill PC performance (App control) Each client update trades a giant bug list for even worse issues. Symantec overlooked an issue with Virus Defs. dated past Dec 31 2009!

Worst of all it almost never catches fake antivirus malware that is all over the internet. even when it does detect something it often never does anything past saying "FYI your system is already hosed"

Other Thoughts: DO NOT BUY.

3 out of 5 eggsGetting better now

Pros: They are updating SEP 11 and currently they are on MR4. The original release and MR1 were very buggy. MR2 is starting to get better. I haven't moved to MR4 yet because MR2 seems to have fixed the major problems and we are stable on it so far. Will be moving to MR4 soon.

Cons: Original release sucked. Just now starting to get back to the quality that you would expect from Symantec.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you download the current version from !!!!! The first few releases were horrible, and that is probably what ships on the CD's.

1 out of 5 eggssymantec loses focus

Pros: shows some potential but totally fails to deliver.

Cons: been using symantec corporate security products for past 8 years. staunchly loyal to symantec all that time despite some issues with the various packages. imagine my horror after deployment of endpoint security... this product seems like a total break from all their previous lines. it's as if it came from a different company. the emphasis seems to be on making the managemnt consoles look PRETTY and bloating the core server/client platforms with everything but the kitchen sink. but all that could be forgiven. the true shock is that this new line simply does not work. the dns and ldap support is fundamentally flawed. the deployment and rollout tools do not work or work sporadically. the port of the management framework from the mmc to the IIS framework is unstable and buggy, it seems unfinished. in addition it seems like the core antivirus and firewall engines have been recoded as well.

Other Thoughts: after 7 years of symantec i'm off to find a new enterprise security platform

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away!!

Pros: It does protect you but at what cost?

Cons: If you are a business I would stay with version 10 as 11 slows your systems down way to much. To bad my end users don't have a choice and don't know but I have removed it from my work machine and put on AVG and its 10X faster. Using this product you will see it using your cps when your computer is sitting there doing nothing. Plus this product has a problem with servers as they will lose there shares and cause all kinds of problems. They are away and have a workaround which basically makes the product act like version 10 did on the server. Come on we paid 1000's for this? STAY AWAY! Find something else!

Other Thoughts: Man symantec use to be the best now they are the worst. I wouldn't buy symantec or McAfee's products any more. They have gotten to bloated!

1 out of 5 eggsthis is a downgrade

Pros: it comes in a pretty yellow box?

Cons: Symantech is a resource hog. and very intrusive. you must install the anti-spyware and the symantech fire wall with this or else it wont work. We installed this on our work server( a fully loaded dell 2900 ) and tried to run it with our retail point of sale software, Retail Pro 8. The first install went Ok but almost immediately we had lag then followed by lockdown. We then tried to uninstall this with its supplied unistaller program for windows server 2003 and it just got hung up. After having to give out level 1 security info to symantec and fax them a copy of our invoice from newegg to prove to them it was a legit product, and after an hour and a half we were finally given a pdf via email to manually uninstall it from the registry. In all we had close to 4 hours of retail down time and a loss of 1000's of dollars in sales. Because of neweggs' return policy on software we kept it, and set up an appointment with Symantech to install it again with tech support.

Other Thoughts: From 9:00 pm to 12:30 am we installed it with over the phone tech support. This time it worked flawlessly. The next morning however was hell. All our pc's were locked again and we set out to uninstall manually. after the uninstall we called back to symantech to see what was wrong and found out. you must use their supplied firewall, you must use the anti spyware and all the other bells and wistles they package with it. You can not turn them off, or uninstall them individually. This was causing a conflick with our physical firewall router and would not work for us.I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS PRODUCT IF YOU ARE USING ANYTHING OTHER THAN ALL SYMANTECH TO SECURE YOUR PC'S AND INFORMATION. Not to mention that it too hours of tech support help to finally find out it wasn't going to work with our router. The only good thing to come out of this is the nice guys at Newegg were understanding of our situation and we worked out a "deal" that renewed my faith in their outstanding customer service!
