1 out of 5 eggsReview update

Pros: Worked briefly.

Cons: Suddenly broke and wouldn't import videos. I contacted customer service and they gave me directions for another product. I told them I was using the standalone version and they continued giving me directions for another Nero product. I'm not entirely sure they even know they made and are selling this.

Uninstalled, reinstalled repeatedly, no joy.

Did a clean install of Windows 8, the same OS and desktop I was using where it worked previously, and it still wouldn't work after all updates were finalized.

I'm sure the Ask or AVG toolbar would still be chugging right along if I hadn't paid attention and let it install, though.

Unreliable junk. Avoid.

Other Thoughts: If you buy it, ghost your system at the moment it is functional so you can restore to that exact moment sometime in the future.

I really regret giving them another chance. I thought they'd improved. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...

2 out of 5 eggsGreat, but two eggs deducted for trying to sneak Ask toolbar in

Pros: I have been looking for a stable program to batch 10 years worth of family movies in various formats to h264 for the cloud element of a three-pronged backup strategy.

I have tried numerous others (Any Video, mediacoder, handbrake, etc.) but none would accept a large batch with any reliability. I was hesitant to try a Nero product since they've really gone downhill since around Nero 6. I decided to give Recode 2014 a shot. I've run into a few instances that this edition locks up and has to be closed through task manager (more than 50 1gb+ files in queue), but it has been surprisingly reliable overall, and almost completely reliable if you batch fewer than 20 videos at a time.

Quality-wise it does pretty well, but I haven't delved into any of the deeper encoding settings. I've set the quality slider bar to the highest setting and checked the option to use Intel's Quicksync, and it has churned through a thousand or so 1-10 minute .avis, .movs, etc. in the last week or so with minimal babysitting.

The quicksync option reduces quality at times, but I'm willing to accept that in order to get the videos off-site and online ASAP, especially since the conversion from some formats (.mov comes to mind) reduces the size of the video to about 25% or less of the original while still being very viewable.

Works great for my needs.

For anyone wondering- Windows8 desktop, Ivy bridge i5, 16gb RAM

Cons: Here is where it lost the two eggs.

I paid for this software, Nero. There is no reason for you to put sneak-attack "Recommended Installation" nonsense in so that I'll find the Ask toolbar or some other open-candy installations junking up my system.

I didn't get caught by it, but I'm sure many people will. Yes you'll get a little bit more ad revenue from the tactic, but that is inexcusable for a paid product. Take that out and you'll get four eggs.

Other Thoughts: I was glad to see it is stable, but very disappointed to see the attempt to install third party software. If you purchase it please be cautious during installation and be sure you're unchecking the relevent boxes to avoid 3rd party installs.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Transcoder I've used

Pros: Batch encoding, Very speedy, Interface has been tweaked for the better over Nero 12.

Cons: The only thing I've found is the internet video downloader, while it pulls in the video you request, it doesn't get ALL of the video. It's not a big deal for me. I have plenty of other software dedicated to that function.

Also your DVD rips have to clean. If the disc you are trying to copy has any structural protections, (these don't always come out completely in the ripping process), you have to use more software to clean out the rip before this software can work with it. This is more of a heads up rather than a negative, as it may be by design, AND we're not supposed to be doing that anyway. Why else would someone need or buy this kind of software. This issue shouldn't effect older discs. Just newer ones from the last say 5 years or so.

Other Thoughts: I am not a fan of Nero's anti consumer customer service. I was treated poorly by them in the past and vowed never to buy their products again. However after trying this version out, I just had to have it. At least it has a reasonable priced and I don't have to buy a bloatware suite which had been their hallmark over the last few versions.

To the previous reviewer. This software is NOT for ripping DVD or Blu Ray discs. You need other software for that. This is a transcoder. It converts dual layer content down to single layer for you, as well to other file types. And does it very quickly.

With my AMD 8 core processor it can transcode a 50 GB Blu Ray to 25 GB in about 3 hours. That is exceptional considering that DVDfab's built in function took 14 hours on my old Intel Core2 duo. DVD's convert to single layer in about 4 - 5 minutes. I am currently converting my media server from Mpeg2 (DVD converted to uncompressed mpeg2 file) to MP4. With this software, I am retaining DVD quality in about half to a little less than half the space at about 14 minutes a file. Very impressive.

The feature I love most is that you can be in mid batch and still add more files to it while it is transcoding. This is very useful if one wants to convert media for a massive Home theater streaming server.

The interface has been simplified when it comes to choosing file types and size, over the previous version.

It is a very worthy purchase.
