Learning Curve Involved
- Pros: Big improvement over other Office versions. It's pretty, it's fast and once you get used to it you'll be flying through it like you did with older ones. The new file formats are much better than the old ones - they're a lot smaller in file size and they're quicker to open. The new rendering engine shows: graphs are cleaner, text is smoother and overall does a better job.
- Cons: Interface is very different than it used to be and it takes some getting used to. Also the new file formats are used by default and it's a bit annoying when you send files to people that are using older versions of Office. However every component can save in older versions and Microsoft has file conversion addons for them.
- Other Thoughts: Bottom line - get a "For Dummies" or "Missing Manual" book alongside Office 2007 and you'll be golden. True it'll take a bit of time but trust me when I say it'll be worth it. The only *real* negative part is the interface but like I said once you learn it you'll go through it like second nature. There's more to it than just native use of the new file formats.
Licensed to Fail
- Pros: Microsoft seems to be saying "Do it OUR way, not your way," but perhaps I missed all the configuration options -- I must admit that I found this product hard to get used to after using Word 2000 for nine years and having all my customized toolbars just the way I like them. It seems that you may customize just ONE toolbar with your favorite commands and you can't dock it wherever you want it. I will admit that the toolbar that automatically pops up next to whatever text you highlight is a good idea.
- Cons: Word 2007 tries to guess what tools you want to use for a particular file type, layout view, etc., but when it guesses wrong you must drill through more menus than you did when you could have as many toolbars as you felt you needed in your window. That's slower and irritating. With today's larger monitor screens, why work so hard to limit the space devoted to tools?
I did not appreciate the fact that under Vista Aero, Word 2007 refuses to adopt your window color choices and limits you to three colors of Microsoft's choice. You have to turn off Aero and choose an 'accessibility' color scheme which you may then modify as you could in previous OSs. No improvement here.
I also didn't like the way Word 2007 nag, nag, nagged me whenever I chose to save in .doc rater than .docx. format and chose to use the old password-protected file encryption over the new in order to maintain compatibility with my Windows 98 machine. I'll migrate everything eventually, I'm thinking, leave me alone!
- Other Thoughts: Hobby time! Worst of all about Word 2007 Home and Student from my point of view is: don't even think about typing anything into this word processor that may one day make you a dollar. Or even help a non-profit organization. ANYTHING that may be considered a business use of this software is prohibited by its license. You couldn't type up for-sale ad, for example, or a short story or poem that you attempt to sell -- making something with the intent to sell it is a business use. Of course if it doesn't sell, Microsoft is unlikely to sue you. But suppose that novel you wrote becomes a best-seller picked up by Hollywood and you make millions? How much do you want to bet that M$ doesn't insert code in every file you make with this software that identifies it as the 'non-commercial' version? Students beware! That novel you started in you Creative Writing class can never be submitted to publishers. Once you have typed something into Word 2007 H&S it is strictly licensed to fail
The Worst Microsoft Word program yet
- Pros: This is the worst Microsoft Word that I have ever had and owned. Why? I had some important medical records stored and saved on my computer that I used (Microsoft Office Word Home and Student 2007) to create and save for me for when I went back to see my doctor so that I could show the medical records results to him for and about my health. Well it turns out that when I went to open the document to print it out for my doctor, Microsoft Word 2007 came up with an error and told me that it could not retrieve the file-document and that it had been lost or damaged and could not be found or viewed. It came up with my important medical record document on a blank (Word) page with none of my medical info that I had been saving for 10 months using Microsoft Word 2007. It saved the name of my document but not any of the important info that was in and on the document. Microsoft Word 2007 mysteriously and somehow lost all of that important medical record history of mine on its own.
- Cons: Every time I close Microsoft Office Word Home and Student 2007 I get a Send Error Report message that pops up and says ("Microsoft office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.") It also says in the Error Report message ("The information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Office Word can try to recover it for you") It in fact does not recover it for you!!! Instead it takes you to a blank new Word document. Right there is a problem-Bug with it and that is probably how and why it lost and completely erased my important document that I needed for showing to my doctor.
- Other Thoughts: In my words, (Microsoft Office Word Home and Student 2007) is just as bad and no better than Microsoft Windows Vista. It released around the same time as Microsoft Windows Vista. (Microsoft Office Word Home and Student 2007) still has way too many Bugs wrong with it to be completely useful and safe to use just like Microsoft Windows Vista. Do not consider buying (Microsoft Office Word Home and Student 2007) unless you want some of your own saved Word documents to mysteriously disappear and be completely erased as well. A good suggestion from me would be to go with an older Microsoft Word such as Microsoft Word 2002 if it still even exists these days.
