5 out of 5 eggsI Love Vista

Pros: From disc insertion to desktop took about 15 minutes (WAY faster than installing XP), found drivers for every component in my system (including 6 USB devices, one of which was my printer) right off the bat (I love not having to install the motherboard drivers off the CD), tons of useful built-in features that aren't found in XP, supports up to 128 GB of RAM, gets better every month.

Cons: UAC is annoying (though easily disabled), software/hardware compatibility not as good as XP (has improved drastically over the last 1.5 years and continues to improve w/ each passing month), still requires some tweaks to get rid of some annoyances (i.e. slow shutdowns).

Other Thoughts: Vista has really turned around since it was released and it is now what I would consider Microsofts best operating system at the moment (and in the near future). I wouldn't consider anything else for a new computer. I know there's a lot of Vista hate out there, but, for the record, I own 4 computers; 1 Vista-based gaming PC, 1 Vista-based laptop, 1 OS X 10.5-based iMac, and 1 XP-based media computer (which used to be my main computer). Based on long-term personal experience, I still say Vista is the best out of all 3.

5 out of 5 eggsLearn to upgrade!

Pros: Vista is what the new XP was 7 years ago. So my advice get over it, XP is going away and it is time to buy 2gb of ram and the matching stuff. When you give Vista the right mix it flies like a fighter jet. XP was the same way. The improvements are well worth the wait and it is easy to install for people who are trained Microsoft professionals. The cost of hardware is cheaper now than it was in 2001. You get what you pay for.

Cons: None, the best OS to date from Microsoft with antivirus blocking in conjunction with AMD and Intel CPUs. The article is on the AMD website. Way overdue.

Other Thoughts: If you disable the UAC most of your old software runs flawless. I am running 16 bit apps from 10 years ago with no issues. Most software companies don't have a clue about this. Most issues are with printers that have shoddy driver support.

4 out of 5 eggsInteresting

Pros: More graphically oriented than XP. Does some interesting things and fun to play with. Much better program than DOS.

Cons: Quirky to load initially with an unformated hard drive. Some third party programs just will not load. The business version won't run DVD movies unless you download a program from the net.

Other Thoughts: I tried to run with 1G of memory, it ran, but the hard drive was swapping continuously and WOW ran just ok with good hardware. Upgraded to 2G of memory and there was quit an improvement. Upgraded to 4G of memory and noticed no difference.

3 out of 5 eggsnot easy to install

Pros: great when you get it goin. fast & easy to use, nicer than xp in my opinion.

Cons: took forever to figure out how to install it. millions of BSD

Other Thoughts: going from 32 bit vista to 64 bit vista. had the disk laying around for like a year. didn't know about the 3 gig ram problem. took me forever to figure it out without being able to get online and look it up. took a solid day and a half (eventually decided to test each ram stick by itself). downloaded the patch and finally got it goin and reading 4 gig ram.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat new OS

Pros: Overall performance is improved. Support for modern and future hardware is incomparably better than XP's aging architecture. Too many seemingly small improvements to even cover.

Cons: People tend to think Vista is inferior to XP due to common negative remarks to EVERY Microsoft OS since Windows 95. I hate people talking bad about it when I heard the same remarks about Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP their first year on the market. Granted, Windows ME was bad.

Other Thoughts: If you have older hardware there's not much reason to upgrade, but please don't buy a new PC with XP because you have heard Vista is bad. The same arguments were made against XP because of the horrible incompatibilities and instabilities its first year out. Vista SP1 is now out and it is a very great OS.

5 out of 5 eggsTruth About Vista

Pros: Vista runs nice and smooth (especially with sp1).

Cons: Only con I can find is that people buy vista and put it on a 5yr old computer and cry cause it doesn't run correctly or is slow.

Other Thoughts: I've used vista business 64bit and 32bit with no issues. Being a newer os it still does have it querks. I've installed it on an old athlon 3200+ barton system with no problems at all.

5 out of 5 eggseven a skeptic loves it

Pros: I was so reluctant to "upgrade" to vista. But: everything worked out of the box. Games run no problem, Aero is nice and surprisingly unobtrusive. I haven't benched anything yet, but it certainly _feels_ faster.

Cons: I didn't upgrade sooner

Other Thoughts: running on: e6750(@3.2Ghz) + 4GB ddr2-800(@960) + evGA 8800gt 512MB

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Trash

Pros: uh, looks prettier than XP?

Cons: Wow, where to start? I guarantee you you'll have at least one piece of hardware that will have serious compatibility issues regarding drivers that actually work properly. If you're building a budget system, beware b/c this is a resource hog.

In an attempt to make things easier to navigate through, Microsoft has achieved the exact opposite. It's overly complicated for computer savy people to tweak this OS.

Other Thoughts: Stay away from Vista people. It's really not worth the headache. XP worked fine and still works fine. I'm considering going back to XP.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat OS! Still some issues though.

Pros: Stable OS, recovered AM above 2.75GB (64 bit). Found all of my drivers, no problem. My printer wasn't compatible (HP Business Inkjet 1100), but I used a built-in driver in Vista64 (HP Business Inkjet 1200) Works just fine.

Cons: Had to install with 2 GB removed (out of 4 GB total) in order to bypass a known bug with Vista. I installed the patch after Vista was installed, shut down and reinstalled the remaining RAM.

Other Thoughts: SuperFetch tries to cache programs and files in order to make he system run faster. I have LARGE video files that I work with and it tried to cache one! I used system resource monitor and watched disk activity and discovered this. S, I disabled the SuperFetch.

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome OS! Got it for free

Pros: I got this for free from my school under the msdnaa program. This is by far the most visually stunning os that MS has put out. I couldn't be more happier with its performance and looks. It boots way faster than xp and under 10 seconds for me. If your a gamer then you won't be dissapointed with dx10. Crysis looks amazingly sweet with dx10. I am all about eye candy and this os certanly pushed the right buttons.

Cons: Yes its resource intensive but you should have done your research homework before you bought this.(or downloaded for free). OS is built with security in mind so it prompts you everytime you want to run a program. Not really a con since it provides security but a little annoying. Is it worth the price? If your happy with XP then no. If you have the hardware to run this baby then absolutetly yes!

Other Thoughts: My machine: 22" hp w2207, intel q6600 quad, 4gb patriot extreme pc 6400, asus p5e-vm hdmi, 2x320gb RAID 0 wd caviar, EVGA 8800GT, and 750W Zalman PSU. Windows experience index - 5.9 of 5.9.
