2 out of 5 eggsWon't install on EVGA X58 system

Pros: If I could get it to install, it would probably be a good OS.

Cons: Blue screen of death early in install process, probably due to a lack of drivers for the motherboard on the DVD.

I was able to install XP 32-bit on the same system, but only after shifting the hard disks to the Marvell controller (not the fast INtel one). The same trick doesn't work for XP 64 bit.

Other Thoughts: Bought and installed Windows 7 instead. At this point there's probably no reason to install XP anymore; it will start running into end-of-life issues soon.

I was going to run XP for the less privacy-invading registration and verification process, but I guess fighting Microsoft is a losing battle.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat OS but...

Pros: Windows XP 64 is a very powerful OS. It's basically XP combined with the Server 2003 core. I've used this version of the OS on several high end systems with little issues, other than what I will name below in the "cons" section. I've yet to have a major software issue other than a few minor older software programs for Windows 9x, and some variant pieces of hardware.

Cons: Very limited in driver support! YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE MICROSOFT HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY LIST OR ELSE!!! Seriously this OS lives and dies by this list and it's a very tight list too, and you can't deviate from it or you might as well switch back to the 32-bit version, or go with Vista 64.

No 16-bit legacy application support. Well this isn't truly a con, but it is a limitation of 64-bit systems, so you will have to make sure all your software works prior to usage. DOSEMU does work to provide 16-bit application support.

Other Thoughts: If you use this system at least have the basics of a good 64-bit Dual Core CPU such as a Athlon64 1.6 GHz or higher and compatible CPU (2.0 GHz or higher recommended) and at least 2GB of RAM (4GB recommended) to really get the benefit of the 64-bit platform's memory and CPU addressing.

Overall you have to plan for this system and plan well or it will not work. With the right hardware and software this OS is very stable and reliable, but with the wrong hardware and software it can be a pain in the neck.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't get this

Pros: - It works... sort of

Cons: -slow
-tons of bugs

Other Thoughts: I bought this OS last year, and since then I've found numerous problems. I had a problem where I couldn't get any Windows updates, (and the huge list of troubleshooting suggestions didn't help) I can't play Dirt 2 due to a bug that only occurs on Windows XP 64 bit, and this operating system has been generally slow for me, even with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16 GHz and 4 GB DDR3 ram. (I typically can't smoothly run two programs at once)

1 out of 5 eggsincompatible with zune

Pros: great os with lower requirements on the system than vista, runs smother and fast than vista

Cons: can not install microsoft zune software on the system because microsoft views this os as being for buisnesses not for the average consumer.

Other Thoughts: have been looking for a work around for this problem and have yet to find one

4 out of 5 eggsVERY POWERFUL OS......

Pros: WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL x64 EDITION IS A VERY FAST AND POWERFUL OPERATION SYSYTEM. I FINALLY GOT TO THE NEXT LEVEL, 64 BIT COMPUTING AND REALLY LIKE IT. GET READY FOR IT BECAUSE IT WILL BE THE WAY OF THE FUTURE.
SORRY TO HEAR THAT SO MANY BUILDERS ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS OS. THIS OS IS VERY STABLE AND DID I SAY POWERFUL? I HAVEN'T EXPERIENCE VISTA YET, THAT WILL BE MY NEXT CHALLENGE. I PURCHASED MS WINDOWS XP PRO 64 BIT AND HAD NO PROBLEMS FINDING DRIVERS AT ALL FOR MY HARDWARE, EXCEPT FOR AN OLD EPSON
SCANNER PERFECTION 636U. THE VENDOR DID
NOT WRITE A PROGRAM FOR THIS SCANNER. BUT I STILL USE IT WITH XP HOME AND PRO 32 BIT EDITIONS. PATIENCE IS THE KEY IN BUILDING NEW MACHINES AND I REALLY LIKE THIS XP PRO X64 BIT EDITION. I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THIS OS. AND 64 BIT COMPUTING WILL BE THE FUTURE FOR ME.

Cons: NO CONS AT ALL FOR THIS OPERATING SYSTEM

Other Thoughts: WHAT SEPARATES GOOD BUILDERS FROM BAD ONES, IS
THE RESEARCH THAT'S DONE AND NEEDED TO BUILD A GOOD MACHINE. I READ TOO MANY REVIEWS WHERE THE AMATEUR BUILDER IS CRIICIZING NEWEGG FOR
SOMETHING THEY DIDN'T DO OR BLAMING THE VENDOR.
THERE IS TONS OF INFO ON GOOGLE AND OTHER SEARCH ENGINES WHEN IT COMES TO LOOKING FOR INFO ON COMPUTERS. NEWEGG ROCKS AND IS STILL THE BEST............

5 out of 5 eggsWorthwhile purchase

Pros: Equally as dependable as its 32-bit counterpart.

Cons: Unpredictable as is to be expected of a Microsoft product.

Other Thoughts: It is occasionally difficult to find appropriate hardware drivers. This is, however, a shortcoming of hardware developers who refuse to distribute their specifications, refuse to develop 64-bit drivers, or attempt to distribute drivers specific to Windows Vista.

Because the era of 64-bit technology is somewhat-well into its existence, it is typically not a problem to find appropriate drivers for your Windows machine. If you cannot find drivers for your hardware, it is time to write the makers a letter and refuse to buy their products.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: all of the features are great just like the 32 bit.

Cons: like others have stated it has some compatability problems. I got this with the hope that it would run all of my fav software... no go it wont run nortons, I had to buy a new wireless network flash card (wouldnt recognize the drivers on my old one) but thankfully it will run all my old game favs wich it what I thought would be the only things that wouldnt work when I baught it. Go figure

4 out of 5 eggsGREAT O.S better than vista

Pros: faster than regular xp and xp pro in every way (small and big differences depending on program)

Cons: I had to install a Beta x64 drive for my hp printer. OOOO it took a massive 5 minutes out of my life WOW. lol. I minus ONE egg FOR PRICE this O.S. has been available since at least late 2005 it's now almost sept 2009. um been the same price since at least about two years ago..Vista different versions have come out..now October windows 7 versions coming out. LET'S DROP THE PRICE ALREADY. You got to make room in inventory for newer stuff right?

Other Thoughts: for those who said they couldn't find the drivers for wireless internet drivers...I've had the Linksys wrt160n wireless n router and the matching usb wireless n linksys card. It installed just fine without any searching or issues. My old wireless linksys wrt54gs router WOULD NOT work with the o.s. but Wrt160n would. hope this helps. Stay away from Belkin routers. They have severe connection issues IF you can even get your pc to "see" the router.
