Write code faster. Not just faster, but better. That's the premise behind Microsoft's Visual Studio 2008 Professional. This comprehensive suite gives you a choice of tools for all phases of the process from initial development through roll out and management. IntelliSense and Wizards are key parts of the Integrated Development Environment that make it easy to roll out quality software without having to spend time focusing on minutiae.
This is the tool set you need to work on today's advanced platforms. It was designed for Vista, Windows Server 2008, Office 2007, SQL Server 2008, Windows Mobile and the Web including ASP.NET AJAX. Because connected and cross-platform applications are increasingly important you can take advantage of the .NET Framework 3.5 to increase interoperability and reduce development time.
A variety of programming languages is provided including Jscript 8.0, Visual Basic 2008, Visual C# 2008 and Visual C++ 2008 so you can work in the language that is most comfortable for you. Once the program is ready to go, run the Dotfuscator to protect your work from reverse engineering.

Like it better than 2005
- Pros: I'm a VB.NET developer and there are a few things that they improved for VB specific apps. The main thing is that they included more of the keywords in the intellisense. C# had this in 2005 but VB didn't, which was dumb. Also, the IDE overall is much more responsive. In 2005 I'd type and it would lag cause I typed faster than it could contemplate the intellisense and then actually display what I typed. In 2008 it thinks and displays just as fast as I can type. They have also added UAC settings right in the Project Settings. In 2005 I've been making my own manifest files for Vista, but now they are just created. Lastly, and my favorite enhancement, VS2008 now supports .NET 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 It's very nice to be able to roll apps over to 3.5 gradually but not have to switch between IDEs.
- Cons: Not too much of a con but the project type (obviously) is different. Any apps started in 2008 won't be able to be opened in 2005. But like I said, not a big deal and it's to be expected. No real cons other than that, everything seems nicer looking and more responsive. No problems with add-ons or plugins so far (crosses fingers).
- Other Thoughts: I wish they had enhanced the UML Class Diagramming. I still find it dumb that you can create a Property in a class but it doesn't associate a Private Member variable with the property. But I just use Refactor! for that anyways. I also wish that they had included more project templates.
came from VS 6.0
- Pros: Works good when developing C++, came from VS C++ 6.0 so a big change for me, has lots of different options for other languages (I will probably never use them though), good customizable UI
- Cons: tends to lag here and there when debugging programs
pricey big and long install cant just open cpp files and build/compile them (like in 6.0), have to start a project first

Solid IDE.
- Pros: If you are going to pay for an IDE (instead of using freeware, or [gag] text editor + command line) VS2008 is a good bet. I have to write C/C++ code that compiles on a Sun workstation using gcc. The time lost in transferring it over and compiling/recompiling is more than made up for by the speed of development and testing with VS2008.
- Cons: - Price. A bit on the high side if you are paying out-of-pocket, especially if you are switching from freeware, but still worth it.
- There is an occasional unexplained crash, but nothing that the diligent application of "Save All" won't protect you from.
- Other Thoughts: - Love the visual debugger. Debugging on Unix makes me want to slam my head in a door.
- NewEgg service was expedient as usual.
