compiled code is slower than VS 2003
- Pros: Says it is compatible with my new Vista. Understands multi-threaded, but probably not as well as VS 2010 will.
- Cons: I compiled the same C++ code with VS 2003 and VS 2008. The VS 2003, from the days of Pentium 4's runs faster on my i7 than the exact same code compiled with VS 2008. 7 to 8 seconds for the command line program with VS 2003 compiler, and 19 seconds for the same program compiled with the VS 2008 compiler. That is bad.

- Pros: Latest version of MS Visual Studio, compiles C++, C, VB, .net programs, ASM
- Cons: Unlike Professional, doesn't include support for handheld OSs, as much remote debugging support, full SQL server.. but maybe you don't need those anyway
- Other Thoughts: This version has the IDE and all the compilers that most people would want. You can compare what's in Professional that isn't in Standard by going to Microsoft's web site - in my case the extra few hundred dollars wasn't worth it.
I would guess that even most professional software developers don't need Professional. At any rate, it works for me, and I've always found Visual Studio to be straightforward and easy enough to configure
