Great OS
- Pros: Fast loading, clean interface, no dropped network connections, increased compatibility, not bad price. New media center add-in, movie maker, DirectX 10.
- Cons: Can be a bit annoying to manage work-group computers. BitLocker Drive encryption does not seem to work on my computer.
- Other Thoughts: A great, clean looking OS with a bundle of options available. Though a bit overpriced, it is well worth it for the bundle of features it carries. Make sure when you buy, that you have at least 2 GB's of RAM, and at least a 2.0GHZ Dual-Core processor. If you have both of these things, then this is the right OS for you.
Wow, works great
- Pros: I was plenty nervous about going 64bit but am blown away at how smooth everything has worked with my legacy software and gear. Generally everything just worked with the accompanying drivers. Six year old printer, no problem, scanner that had stopped working with my XP, no problem. Only issue so far was that my old Photoshop Lite that came with that old printer would not install. Also found one feature that makes Ultimate the way to go. Using Complete Backup and Restore I can back by entire OS plus all applications (keep my data on separate partition) onto an external HDD or my other partition in about 7 minutes! Even tested it out to recover everything to a blank HDD and it was a perfect clone. Sweet!! There are other 3rd party solutions but this works great and saves the extra $.
- Cons: Lost critical data from the upgrade! Unbelievably, Microsoft allows you to "encrypt for protection" a file or an entire folders contents with 3 simple clicks (right click properties, left click advanced, select "encrypt for protection". Naturally you would tend to do this with the your most important data. Remarkably, even with Vista now there is no further prompt warning that you need to go through other procedures to assure you yourself are able to continue to access your own data. Nothing!! and this is a consumer product!! Your next clean install (yeah, never need that with these super stable Windows OSes) and your data is gone forever!!! Unreal!!! Logical human beings would set this up such that you are directed to admin services to set up this functionality where all the critical details would get covered. XP had this issue, Vista continues it, how about Windows 7? Get with it MS. This is lame!!
- Other Thoughts: MS support sucks and MS website explanations are exercises in verbosity that imparts as little information as possible. Still they are starting to get things right! If you are nervous about leaving XP don't be so long as you have the necessary hardware.
- Pros: This comes with both the 32 and 64 bit dvds. Also, using these dvds you can install ANY version of Vista as long as you have a valid key. Works great.
- Cons: Has an issue with very few ati video cards (mainly the radeon x1650 and the x1900 series), but it now has a work around.
- Other Thoughts: I've enjoyed it thus far, and am considering buying a second one (after all, microsoft doesn't sell just the liscence on this one...)
