Works with ease, worth it for the Windows 7 Upgrade
- Pros: 64-bit version allows for more than 4GB of RAM, which with Vista I highly recommend. I'm sitting here just installing Windows Updates, with current memory usage right @ 2GB. For the guy who complained about the annoying "Do you wish to allow Access" prompts, those can easily be removed by turning off the "User Account Control" feature under Windows Security Center... The package I bought came with the current Windows 7 RC as well as a free coupon to update to Windows 7 when it is actually released.
- Cons: This is an OEM version, meaning you can ONLY install it on one single computer (configuration). With the retail version, Windows can be installed on only ONE computer at a time, but it can be a different computer.... But since this was known ahead of time, I still gave it 5 eggs...
It is well known that Vista is much more of a resource hog compared to XP.... However if you can deal with Vista, this deal is worth the money IMO for the free Windows 7 Upgrade...
- Other Thoughts: I have yet to install Windows 7 RC, so I cannot comment on that...
Current Setup: AsRock a780gxe AMD Phenom II 940 @ 3.0 Ghz 4GB Dual Channel kit memory Sapphire Radeon 4850 1GB 2x500gb SATA 1x200gb IDE Soundblaster Audigy
Boots & Installs on new system OK
- Pros: The less expensive OEM disk was able to boot and install onto a new system OK, I didn't need to use any other S/W from Microsoft builders web site.
The OS 7 coupon was accepted by MS, before I did the install
- Cons: It's Vista, and if you got used to the older versions of windows, you have to learn how to do things all over again. The more advanced your knowledge was, the more you helpless you feel, since the advanced things changed the most.

Not as bad as everybody says
- Pros: As a long time Linux and OS X user, and an occasional windows user for testing at work, I was really looking for a windows to install for a gaming machine. The low-price and tech upgrade, made this the windows of choice for this. I was dreading using it from all the horror stories, but, believe it or not, it's not half bad. Stability is pretty good, hardware support is OK (all the components were autodetected in Ubuntu, none of the network adapters were found by windows, and only one of the three that I tried worked with downloadable windows drivers), speed is decent. This is definitely an improvement coming from XP SP2 as my previous gaming platform.
- Cons: Overpriced and under-featured. As a standard desktop Ubuntu provides a far more complete user experience for free. However, when this machine is running windows I only using it for gaming, and keep all other non-essential garbage off of it. For this it works fine, just remember to turn off the auto-update feature and to update by hand when necessary. Otherwise you may find downloads clogging your pipes when you're gaming or attempts to reboot when you're in the middle of a battle.
- Other Thoughts: As an aside I went through the win7 upgrade last week and I'm still trying to figure out why I bothered. I don't notice any speed improvements over vista and other than eye-candy which I can't see when I'm gaming anyway, it's still the same old windows. You may say "oh, the next version of direct X won't support vista", but that's just forced obsolescence by Microsoft. Win7 is a point upgrade from Vista and unless you get it for free or need to upgrade because some other product is forcing you to, don't bother.
Works
- Pros: Got this one for the free copy of windows 7. I've been using it since it came out. Only had the problems other people talk about when it first came out, after that it was working perfect. I have more problems with 7 hanging that I never did with vista. Speed is the same as 7 for my setup
- Cons: It does need a lot of memory but I have 4 gigs so not so much for me
Vista 64
- Pros: Works well, detects all RAM,looks good, seems quicker online than XP or W7. Came with up-grade. My wife likes the gadgets. I installed this on a XP 32 machine with no problems and switched to W7-64 when I got the up-grade, also installing with no problems. I don't know why Vista got the bad rap unless it was teething pains the first year or 2. Any needed drivers needed were easy to find, except for a HP printer.
- Cons: W7 is faster booting up.
- Other Thoughts: We also have a laptop with Vista32 and got a W7-32 upgrade. My wife has taken to using it with Vista and not up-grading to W-7. If I had to pay for W7 I would not have gotten it as for my uses I see no real difference between it and Vista. However both are much better than XP-32. I have no experence with XP-64

In addition to all previously released updates, SP1 contains changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also continues to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Service Packs are not intended to be a vehicle for releasing significant new features or functionality; however some existing components do gain slightly enhanced functionality in SP1 to support industry standards and new requirements. |
