5 out of 5 eggsWindows 7... What more can you say?

Pros: Great interface, great driver support, nice features, etc... I bought this during the presale for 100 bucks a copy and it works great. I probably like it so much because I was coming off of XP but I didn't feel like buying a bunch of asprin just to deal with Vista.

Cons: UAC can be a pain sometimes but I guess it's all part of the game. I guess it's not nearly as bad as Vista's garbage but it's still there. 64 bit and older device softs (utility apps, not drivers) don't seem to like to play nice sometimes, even in XP mode. The generic Windows drivers will get you by but it's best to hunt down the correct x64 drivers from the manufacturers. Not a biggie though. x86 apps run fine. You don't really even notice that your running 64 bit at all (you get a choice of 32 or 64 to install).

Having a mixed Windows home network can be a learning experience too because Microsoft wants you to use Homegroup, which is easier but only works with other Win 7 machines. Not truly a headache but you have to jump through a few hoops to get it done.

Other Thoughts: This is the wave of the future. Get on board or you'll miss it. good OS and pretty stable.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks pretty well

Pros: It works way better than Windows 3.1! Way better.

It's pretty, and will install devices from drivers on the internet (unlike XP where clicking update driver online did nothing), glad they finally decided to use that feature.

One of the best parts of the OS is the built in search in the start menu. I love it! (worth noting that it is almost identical to Vista's start menu) Wondering where the link to rdp is hiding? Click start, or press the windows key on your keyboard, and type: rdp. It will show rdp listed above, press enter, or click on the result you want, it's as easy as that for almost any function/program/setting in windows! Want paint? type paint. anything you want, sysprep, user account control, firewall, sounds, etc.

I love being able to move maximized windows too. Or arranging them to fill half the screen by dragging the window to the left or right side of the screen

Cons: Drives me nuts, when in windows explorer, if you click on a folder (folder view with folder structure on left) and then click the down arrow to browse, and it shows nothing on the right! In 98, 2000, 2003, xp, vista this worked fine, just arrow down throught the list and the contents of the folder is shown on the right. Not in 7, you have to click each one to show contents.

Annoying that favorites and libraries cannot be removed from folder view's left pane.

Or how about when you click a folder and it moves the view to the bottom of the window? What's up with that? Moving the view to the top would make sense, not the bottom.

Very expensive! Forget the retail version! The upgrade is expensive enough! One of the most expensive parts of a lower high end system :( An Intel i5-750 cpu is the same price... lame.

I miss 'Add or Remove Programs' instead it's 'Programs and Features'. minor gripe.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to like this OS more than Vista, but the truth is, I prefer Vista. It looks almost the same, performs only slightly faster, and has several more annoying 'features' that I would rather not have, or pay for.

I do like the option to re-order the task bar, and the clock/calendar is awesome. Start-tab is gimmicky, but fun. Not a fan of the task bar icons without labels (too Apple like to me)

Contrary to popular opinion, 7 will run almost every program available. We are using several DOS programs, one win95 program and a bunch of newer stuff. No problems with compatibility. This was true of Vista as well. There are some that don't run, but most will run when you choose the right 'compatibility mode' (right click the program/icon, click properties, then go to compatibility and choose which OS to mimic, along with screen size, memory usage, etc.)

Pin to start menu is cool, but I don't like pin to task bar, they end up between running programs more often than not.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than MS's typical beta release

Pros: Includes both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of OS. Great features and more streamlined/intuitive interface than previous releases of windows OS. Recognizes most components without having to dig out driver disks. Boot up and shutdown are much faster than previous install of XP. There are a fair number of interruptions for updates, but I suppose we are all used to that with Windows products.

Cons: Had a failing drive, so I wanted to perform a clean install. The upgrade requires you to first install the OS you plan to upgrade rather than just requesting the CD. Also, I had to first upgrade to 32 bit, then upgrade again to 64 bit in order to take advantage of 64 bit version.

Other Thoughts: Overall worth the price of admission in my opinion.

3 out of 5 eggsbe aware of policy

Pros: Windows 7 is a better OS and the upgrade products actually work...

Cons: except that you can't upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Pro. Vista ultimate can only be upgraded to Windows 7 ultimate. A customer requested this upgrade. I really should have expected this and caught it beforehand.

Other Thoughts: Even though this is technically my fault for not checking first, I'm taking 2 eggs because this upgrade policy is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 eggsNot as happy as I hoped

Pros: Fast - If you like XP you will really like Windows 7. The look and speed are improved with windows that snap open and close quickly.

Installed the 32-bit version until the 64-bit drivers for some of my older equipment come available.

Cons: Gigabyte drivers for overclocking and energy monitoring would not install or function properly. Will have to check for updates.

XP emulation mode has to be downloaded.

The biggest challenge was loading the software on an existing Vista Business set-up. It simply would not allow an upgrade installation. I instead had to perform a clean install and then spend the entire weekend reinstalling software and downloading updates/service packs.

Other Thoughts: Window 7 is really only an advantage on slower machines or laptops. It is just not much of an upgrade from Vista Business if installed on a newer desktop.

Transfer Wizard is a real pain unless you have an external back-up drive or network drive. I tried to use the original drive as the backup drive connecte via SATA cable, but Windows 7 would not recognize/allow access to it even though the was detected in Device Manager.

I will not be installing Windows 7 on any of my remaining computers. It is just not much of an improvement.

5 out of 5 eggsI finally like windows!

Pros: Everything works as it should, and is much more intuitive than previous versions. Remember the driver installer that didn't do anything helpful in XP? It actually works here! I have no complaints at all with the actual OS.

Cons: The retail price is too high, and keeping the different versions was a poor decision.

Other Thoughts: Windows is usually too expensive, but this time at least it's enjoyable to use. I really used to just tolerate Windows, but I'm happy to own this.

4 out of 5 eggsMicrosoft's Best OS to Date

Pros: Faster than XP and Vista, and fixes many annoyances present in Vista. "Libraries" are nice, easy to work with, and convenient. After getting used to the new task bar, I find its operation is fairly convenient. Improved task manager and resource monitor.

Cons: The "sliding" effect of and access to the elements of the start menu are annoying and makes the start menu difficult to navigate. More UI options should be adjustable, such as always displaying "more details" when copying/moving/deleting files. It's cumbersome to get to some administrative elements, such as the network connections/adaptor interface. The 64-bit version of all included apps should be default when available (IE defaults to the 32-bit version on a 64-bit system).

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is Microsoft's best OS. It's an improvement over XP and Vista and is absolutely worth the upgrade if you're running any prior version of Microsoft Windows.

1 out of 5 eggsI'm Mad!!!

Pros: None - Can't use it without reinstalling my system. If I wanted to do that, I could have saved 40 bucks and bought the System Builders Edition instead of the pricey Vista to Windows 7 upgrade version.

Cons: I currently have Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit Edition and bought this to upgrade to Windows 7, only to find out it will not upgrade because my Vista version is higher than the Windows 7 Professional.

Why does it cost so much for me to upgrade from my Vista Ultimate? Shouldn't we get a break for just upgrading? This is nonsense!

Other Thoughts: I just bought a 185 dollar coaster because this was not made real clear that it is not a valid upgrade path from Vista Ultimate to 7 Professional.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent

Pros: - so fast and sharp
- kills vista altogether
- allows me to get rid of my vista licence and get that instead
- has legacy drivers for my prehistoric (but trusty) HP Laserjet 6L (why would I change a perfectly fine piece of equipment?)

Cons: - pricey ... even for an upgrade
- some older programs have issues, but hey, that's the cost of advancement. I still got plenty of old computers around for these, including good ol' Windows 98 machines for DOS games :)
- would not install 64bit over a 32bit vista was a pain (setup file would crash when starting it in vista). I had to do a CLEAN custom install.
- networking non-7/vista machines is a bit tricky, yet feasible.

Other Thoughts: Cranking that baby on :
- Core I7 920 on MSI X58
- Radeon HD4870 512 megs
- 6 gig triple channel of 10666
- 1 gig of Raid 0

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Operating System

Pros: Runs smoothly
Runs fast
Windows snap feature.
The good things of Vista remain
The problems of Vista removed

Cons: This should have been Vista not Windows 7
Every now and then it hangs on installation of updates before shutdown so it never shuts down. ** Not sure if this is a problem with my system rather than the operating system.

Other Thoughts: Microsoft is back! The glitches and things that made Vista slow have been successfully ironed out in this new version. Yes, this should have been Vista and not a new Windows version but at least we got discounted pre-order prices. Many of my friends and myself have stopped using Linux in place of Windows because this OS is so nice.

4 out of 5 eggsSure Beats Vista`

Pros: Way better than Vista (a backhanded compliment, I know). Faster and easier on a CPU than Vista (I put it on an old Dell E1705 under trial period and it flew like XP). Great SSD support. I bought my copies when they had the intro pricing, so it's easier for me to overlook any faults. Virtually no compatibility problems with older 32-bit and 64-bit Vista and XP apps (I am using the 64-bit version). Most Vista drivers work if you can't find a Win 7 one.

Cons: My installer said to do a full clean install, so I did (I own a full retail of XP which is a valid upgrade path). When I went to activate it, it said it was invalid. Microsoft walked me through a 30-minute series of events that resulted in full activation. I should have just done the double-install trick to begin with, but Mr. Softy did come through and activated it for me. More of an annoyance than a fault.

Other Thoughts: Usual things - While it does recognize and align an SSD correctly, it's still a monster unless you are willing to turn off restore, hyberfil, etc. I got a good install for a business-type system into 19GB. Does great with SageTV if you are thinking HTPC. TRIM issues will probably be argued back and forth on the forums for a while if you are using an SSD.

4 out of 5 eggsGood deal

Pros: Awesome OS. It is definitely what Windows Vista should have been. MS really hit the nail on the head with this one. 7 is probably the best new OS I've used in years.

Cons: No problems with MS, had a heck of a time getting this product to my house, though. It was shipped to an previous apartment. Luckily I had a friend still living there who picked it up for me. I changed my delivery information about 26 hours before it got shipped but it didn't help at all, and was still shipped to the wrong residence. This is something I will need to keep in mind for future pre-orders. the hassle is what made me give it one less egg.

Pros: Windows 7 Is What Windows Vista Should Have Been No Doubt About That I Can Say I Have Only One Con About Windows 7 But All And All I Love Windows 7.

Cons: The Only Con I Have I Play One Of My Online Games & The Color In It Is A Little Off Like My Yellow Looks A Little Green & Blues A Dark Red Or Something But When I Look On The Color Its Blue & Yellow But Looking On It Threw It On The Corner Of My Screen Of A Map Of All The Callers Its Messed Up

Other Thoughts: Wish I Could Change The Start Button To Classic View Not Sure If U Can If U Can Have Not Figured It, Out Also I Wish I Could Play 32-bit Versions Of A Game On A 64-bit OS Wish They Would Make The OS Like Let U Install A Game And In The OS Ask U Let It Run In 32-Bit And Only Let The Game Run In 32-Bit And OS Run In 64-Bit Maybe It Will Be Possible Soon Enough

5 out of 5 eggsIt's not Windoze anymore.

Pros: Microsoft's best OS to date. Speedy, powerful and generally well thought out. I particularly like the Windows Media Center Interface. 64 bit version allows a lot more memory to be addressed. Gentle enough on resources to be used with an Atom 330 processor!

Cons: Install from 32 bit XP or either version of Win 7 RC is more of a hassle than it needs to be. I am not looking forward to the possibility of having to reinstall it in the future.

Other Thoughts: I pre-ordered this during the short time last summer Microsoft was offering it for $100.00. Win 7 Professional doesn't have BitLocker or multiple language support, but has everything else that Win 7 Ultimate does. At present day prices, I'd probably go for Home Premium. At the $100.00 pre-order price, it was a steal. Congratulations to Microsoft for finally getting something mostly right!

5 out of 5 eggsVirtual PC - X Windows Mode

Pros: Professional allows you to download a free copy of Virtual PC with Windows XP mode. While this was intended for business customers to run their old apps; it also is great for running old Win XP games on Windows 7. If you are on a 64 bit machine the Virtual PC creates a 32-bit model allowing your old 32 bit Win XP games to install and run.

Cons: Make sure your download and run the free Windows 7 adviser before buying this upgrade! It will tell you if there are driver or hardware problems. Also if you want to run Virtual PC there is a free checker program to make sure your CPU and BIOS support the Virtual PC mode.

Other Thoughts: There are some minor adjustments for disk size and memory size that need to be done to use the Virtual PC mode. But these are minor and relatively easy to do.

4 out of 5 eggsWin7 the best so far...

Pros: I played around with the RC1 build for a bit before deciding to buy, went with the $100 upgrade for Pro. This is the most stable and feature rich WinOS I've seen yet. I think the most compelling reason to buy would be for the sake of a new build, for compatibility with new hardware, especially if Vista is giving you fits.

Cons: Win7 is not perfect, it will blue screen, and I've had some minor conflicts between drivers for sound and video cards. Flash Player also tends to crash any browser more frequently than I'd like, but this may not be the fault of Win7. I've seen some memory errors as well, but again much fewer than either Vista or XP.

Other Thoughts: If you are running older or legacy hardware stick with XP for now. XP will not get "old" anytime soon, and the prices for Win7 should gradually fall over time. Plus, M$ is already talking about release of "Windows 8" in another three years! For $100 I consider this an investment for the future, not a "must have" for right now.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well, upgrade from 32-bit Windows can be a hassle

Pros: Installs fast with very few questions asked, streamlined new UI, generally smaller memory footprint than Vista x64, more reasonable bundling of features that actually matters (like EFS support which is lacking in Vista's HP version), DriveImage backup is more favored by me than Vista's solution.

Cons: Due to the limit of 32-bit Windows (Vista or others) upgrade path, clean install is required and activation will take you through multiple MS departments (only technical support will work, don't even bother with phone activation); dubiously worth the effort/money if you already have a clean Vista x64 install (like my other desktop), UI changes can be confusing.

Other Thoughts: Upgraded my Sony Vaio laptop (C2D T7250 4GB Santa Rosa) w/ Vista HP x86 along with a new Seagate 500GB 7200rpm HDD. No question that boot time improves drastically (previously it was abysmal). However, activation is almost like hell if you don't have enough patience going thru MS's support.
The method provided by MS tech guy (may not work in your case): regedit HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE\MediaOnInstall = 0, then administrator-cmd.exe, run cscript.exe slmgr.vbs -rearm, then try activate again online.
In hindsight, MS should have provided an installer that will put files on the harddrive then reboot (I mean, Wubi can do the job for Ubuntu, why not?)
I think the current packaging makes Win 7 Pro the most desired version (and Ultimate almost useless for the extra $$), and education discount makes it dirt cheap. However, if you have a running clean Vista x64, I am not sure how much you'll gain from the upgrade. At least I don't plan to yet for my desktop.

4 out of 5 eggsVista Done Right!

Pros: They finally got all the bugs out of Vista!! More stable than XP and faster too! 64-Bit gives you pleanty of Ram!! If it works with Vista it will work with W7 (drivers included).

Cons: A lot of features and options where changed, moved or completely removed (like the Quicklaunch bar!). Some things can be added back with some research.

Other Thoughts: Overal happy with the switch, So long XP!

Pros: I did the XP Upgrade to WIn 7 Pro (64 bit) which basically means it is a fresh install. So far it likes everything in my system. I found drivers even for some hardware that had been listed as questionable.

Cons: Since the upgrade. Outlook 2007 almost always has an issue shutting down properly.

Other Thoughts: I pre-ordered this and two issues of Home Premium when Microsoft and many of their retailers offered an incredible upgrade offer. I use this computer every day and so far it more dependable than XP. I am glad I made the upgrade.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 upgrade

Pros: Upgrade from windows xp pro. to 7 64bit. Works great,
my daughter loves it. No problems. Must clean install xp
then upgrade.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I gave this copy to my daughter. I received 7 ultimate free
from microsoft for hosting a party. Much needed. I didn't
need two copies. Newegg and microsoft are the best.

3 out of 5 eggsUpgrade for "Vista" OS

Pros: It's Windows 7 Pro, yay!
"Customized" install rids all of the the Bloatware installed on my new PC.
NewEgg price is good @ $179.00

Cons: It's an "Upgrage". Do your homework!

Worse, it's an upgrade for Vista OS.
It does not mention Vista anywhere in the product description.
Customized Install is not a "Clean" Install.

Other Thoughts: I wanted the benefits of Pro over Windows 7 Home Premium.
To date, I haven't tried to use the extras Pro offers. I wanted to use the XP Mode for one progam I have but I have since found a work around. Hmmm.
Do your Homework before buying this version.

Pros: Had NO issues installing the upgrade version. I have since upgraded to RAID 0 (the drivers are included!!), need cheaper SSD's.

Cons: During my upgrade to RAID 0 I had to re-install XP since I have the upgrade version. The upgrade process should have at least checked with MS if OS had previously been validated instead of forcing an XP install.

Pros: Easy to install/upgrade, features are good. With the right system combo, it's very responsive (boots in seconds).

Cons: XP to 7 upgrade is painful, clean install makes things easier.

Pros: Way better than Vista. It is time to upgrade Windows if you have a newer machine.

Cons: I still like Windows 3.1 better for viewing my files. The My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos, etc. "faked" directories has always been wrong, and I hate that they disappear when you make the OS drive a secondary when upgrading. For those of us who have every PC file backed up to the year 1994, they should always be in directories that never change their names!

Other Thoughts: I was able to get some of my ancient hardware and software installed on my new i7 PC using the XP mode included with this OS. Now I can wait paycheck to paycheck for additional upgrades.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's about time...

Pros: Runs like xp, looks better than vista. I really like the virtual PC mode professional has. I keep XP Mode on 1 monitor and 7 on the other, works nicely. I would pay the extra $$$ again to upgrade to pro vs home premium. Boot time is noticeably faster.

Cons: Shouldn't somebody at Microsoft been smart enough to skip vista and go for windows 7 instead of wasting our money?!?

It would be nice to allocate more memory to XP mode though I suppose it is not necessary.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's no Windows 2000

Pros: It's a lot better than Vista or it's what Vista was meant to be.

The 64-bit version can actually put a Core I7 with 6GB RAM to use.

It looks good.

Media Center plays everything. Internet TV is cool and so is playing chess with a remote control, but who's gonna build a $2000 computer for the tv?

Comes with an XP License. I think. Can I run my licensed version of XP in VMWare instead?
(many consumers buy this because of XP mode, but then never install it, because they don't understand)

It has some really nice things that improve efficiency. (Almost as many as it has that take longer to do the same thing)

The Firewall appears to be almost all you need (very configurable)

XPS printer and viewer just about replaces what I use acrobat for

Resource Monitor is nice (although I still can't tell what is working my hard drive when I turn my back on the machine:)

Renaming files with extensions on highlights the beginning.

There's more good stuff in the guts of it.

Cons: I want to click on my programs, not search for them. Google became popular because people like finding stuff, not because they like searching for it.

I don't have enough room in the programs area.

I liked quicklaunch, I created my own using toolbars. I coundn't use the new thing, I have 10 things and the icons take up too much space

I don't want my work all bunched up into 1 icon

show desktop on the left is driving me crazy

all important documents are not in my documents, libraries are just going to confuse people

The recent documents area is corrupted in my machine already. some things never show up there anymore.

I switched to 64-bit and I have to buy new versions of half my programs (this is understandable)

can't move it to another partition yet without it locking me out (I'm scared of my own computer)

a fresh updated install of xp uses 200MB ram at boot, 7 uses 1000, it runs well, unlike Vista

have to use dos:) to turn off 10GB hibernation file

Other Thoughts: After a week, I've almost got a core I7 with 6GB of ram running as good as my core 2 duo with Media Center Edition.

Over time, I will master this OS and make it work more efficiently for me, but for now, it's slowing me down.

In general, it's a lot more clicks to get to the same things that are deep inside xp. why change the location of all that stuff? consumers don't use it anyway and it just alienates the guys that recommend computers.

Sadly, It still has the same little buggy things that windows has always had. It forgets things, things get mixed up.

In general, I like it, but I've got no choice.
It's the best alternative I have.
I can tell that it's going to be one of their best and I'll like it more as time goes on.

Microsoft still has a long way to go in understanding their customers and the technical crowd that supports them.

It's good, but people aren't going to blabber on and on about how much they love their PC the way they do about the MAC.

Pros: I went from Vista 32bit to Win 7 64bit and I found the transition very smooth. Installation was smooth with no problems. I have not had driver or software problems as of yet with any of the programs that I use. I do a lot of video and music encoding, photography and use Adobe Creative Suite CS3 extensively. I also use Starry Night Pro 6 astronomy program and it works smooth and with no problems. Had a problem under Vista. Videos and Blue Ray play very well under Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 3. I highly recommend the upgrade.

Cons: None at the moment.

2 out of 5 eggsNot much better than Vista 64

Pros: Cleaner different interface screens. Slightly faster load.

Cons: Problems with drivers still not working. Not worth the upgrade price. Does not work with Windows Live One Care, for those of us who still have a few months left on there subscriptions. No new offer or support for Live one Care, its being dumped in 2010. You will have to pay more for 3rd party antivirus, malware, and firewall protection to protect your PC. Just another method of Microsoft scheme to make money, its clearly not worth the price they want, nor the hassle to reinstall drivers and settings that do not automatically set on install.

Other Thoughts: If you have no issues and you got vista 64 working with no issues, I would stick to Vista, til Microsoft, dishes out a worthwhile new OS that is worth the money they want.

Pros: I didn't do an update I did a fresh install, and yes you can do a fresh install with an upgrade. It's just another way windows can make more money. Works great. Would recommend.

Cons: Games are disabled in Windows Pro 7. If businesses don't want their employees playing games maybe they should keep their employees busy then they won't have time to play games or get each other into trouble.

Other Thoughts: If you want the games in Pro 7 click on the start icon, the click control panel, then uninstall or change a program, then click turn windows features on or off, then check the games and hit ok. the games will work.

5 out of 5 eggsW7P - Gain some faith

Pros: Breath of fresh air

I was very hesistant about W7, since it looked like Vista in a different skin. Well, not completely true. It installed smoothly and took in almost "everything" including native HP programs (except Quicklaunch). Its pleasant to look at and well organized.

A much better effort in making it a pleasant experience.

Cons: Like Vista, my laptop will suffer the performance gains by sacraficing power saving motive (I could get close to 4h with XPP doing Office stuff, not about 1.5-2hrs). Still a bit hot, but will not match the egg frying vistas temperature.

Other Thoughts: W7 is reaslly a breath of fresh air after the dire Vista. My HP Business Laptop is close to 4 yrs old and still a bit more technologically advanced than most typical laptops on market and I was given Vista Upgrade for free. I tried installing Vista 3 times (all spread out based on patch work))- all buggy failures and returned back to XPP quickly.

The 4th install went through in a breeze. But Vista wouldn't install 1/2 the programs. The power consumption just bottomed (barely scrape an hr with office stuff). My concern, however, was my laptop got atrociously HOT!!. It started tokick out a WSOD after 1/2h use, to the point where it wouldn't even turn on. I had it sent for diagnostic work (precautionary). All looked clear, but them WSODs freaked me out. Went back to XPP, vowed never Vista again.

Then W7 came (see pros)

1 out of 5 eggsA Vista "patch" that should be free

Pros: Installed reasonably quickly on a Dell XPS (around 40 minutes).

Slightly cleaner user interface, but still too many menus and options.

Cons: To my surprise, it would not upgrade Vista Home Premium. The Ultimate version will - which means that it is a revenue, rather then a technical issue.

Had to do a clean install.

Video driver for our notebook did not install (ended up with a default VGA graphics). Dell website only had Vista drivers. Had to poke around and download a reference driver from Nvidia.

Fairly standard (synoptic?) touch pad driver didn't install.

After installing this OS and playing around a bit, I've found absolutely nothing exciting about it. It looks like Vista, no games got installed, absolutely nothing that would make me say - WOW, ...that's cool.

Why do consumers have to understand and suffer through all the different versions of what's essentially one product? It's a very 90s revenue model.

Other Thoughts: My wife got this upgrade through an academic discount and in our opinion, we still paid too much. It's a Vista patch that should've been free.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 is very good

Pros: Very stable, when using a laptop and closing the lid and it goes into standby, when opening the lid and resuming from standby, wi-fi network connection is reconnected in seconds, not minutes like with Vista.

Windows 7 is Vista slimmed down, it feels lighter and faster.

Cons: Some programs won't work unless you download and install the XP Virtual thing. Nero 6 being a good example. Of course, Nero 6 didn't work on Vista either though.

Pros: Clean, easy to learn, not a performance hog. Easy install

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I ran the beta (Ultimate) for 8 mos and found that Win 7 is much better than Vista. Very easy upgrade from Vista. Seems to use less system memory than XP Pro did. I preordered Win 7 both professional and home premium at a very good price.........Wish I had ordered more of them. I also got the home professional 3-pack. Also 4 copies of Win 7 Ultimate. I think the Professional version is the one to go with it has everything you need.

4 out of 5 eggsWindows 7... MUCH better than I thought

Pros: Very stable and reliable so far for me. My system hasn't run this smooth in a long time. I have been using Windows XP 32bit forever and was content enough with it until recently. I guess I have officially reached the point of trying to use too many new components with an old OS. I was running into stability issues and handi-caps quite often with XP and was having strange graphic glitches in some of my most critical software. I installed 64bit Windows 7 since my system hardware is all 64bit and man, what a difference! Every problem I was having is gone! The system is much more responsive and pleasant to use and while it's superficial, I have found that after tweaking Aero and the interface my computer feels once again like a piece of modern hardware and is just pleasant to use even for the smallest tasks. I was surprised how much better Windows 7 made my computer feel/act.

Cons: The price definitely. I appreciate all the effort that went into Windows 7 and I didn't come from Vista (was scared away from it by a friends constant computer woes) but the price is still too high for an upgrade to me. What would have made it acceptable to me would have been a multi-license option for the Pro version. I would have loved to pay a little more for 3 licenses since I have 3 systems. As it is I'll have to wait quite a while. I don't have $600 just for an OS right now.

Also and this isn't Microsoft's fault, but I am a little irritated that a lot of the vendors are way too relaxed about 64bit driver support, even after all these years of 64 bit systems being out there. If you are going to try the 64bit version of Windows and have a wireless N setup, be aware that driver support seems to be REALLY bad from all the vendors right now. I can only connect at G speeds. Was going to get another brand of adapter but guess what? All the brands are having major issues with this

Other Thoughts: I was skeptical before upgrading even though I was strongly encouraged by some friends who had upgraded and loved it. I only did the upgrade out of desperation since the strange problems I was having seemed to have no answers or help to address them even after searching for weeks. I sure am glad I did! Not only did it fix my system but all my old programs that I was nervous about are all working fine, even some of my games people told me wouldn't work. The only thing that hasn't worked so far is my old scanner, but you can't expect things to be supported forever, especially when the manufacturer doesn't even support them anymore. I am sure that the experience with older hardware/software can differ greatly, but if you have newer computer components than I think Windows 7 should be a no-brainer. Take it from someone who had to be convinced! It was easy to install, stable, quick, and pretty to look at... what more could you want?

Cons: ZERO

3 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 is not heaven

Pros: I like the show desktop feature, the better management for the notification icons, the automatic split screen for multiple documents, the quicker boot, the better backgounds and how they can randomize, the START links for documents, pictures, videos, music...

I was happy to find MajicJack, tuner card, Logitech webcam, Linksys router, Motorola modem and other hardware/software worked.

The graphics are brighter and crisper too!

There is much to like but I don't like spending lots of time contacting my vendors and doing research to get things running. Some of them ignored my E-mail (BitDefender). HP really helpped out.

Cons: Recent items list would not populate
Search box did not exist
HP 7960 photo printer will not work - no drivers for Win 7. Got to work using alternate drivers but can't share it on the network.
OneTouch scanner will not work - no drivers for Win 7
Bitdefender 2008 or 2009 would not work - 2010 does
Got incompatable or install errors with Roxio Suite and Spybot. Windows 2007 Suite failed on the first installation but the second try worked.

I spent a lot of time getting most of my software and hardware to work. I was able to move my scanner to another PC but I really don't like it there. I have to buy a new one that is compatable with Win 7 if I want it to be on my main PC.

Other Thoughts: The disabled devices really irk me. Although I was able to to jury-rig the printer, my network PCs can't reach it.

Pros: As what most have probable herd by now, it is what Vista was supposed to be. I never got in to Vista, but I really enjoyed 7 beta and RC. I've been running XP forever because Vista wasn't worth the money or the trouble. Now it's time for a change.
Very convenient. Fast start up/shut down. Easy networking(provided all computers run 7).

Cons: Still some bloat. 50+ processes from clean start. Requires plenty of resources.

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome - Well worth the upgrade

Pros: Windows 7 rocks. I upgraded from XP Pro and haven't looked back. I started with the 7 beta, then onto the RC, and now the official upgrade. I had no problms upgrading XP by putting the DVD in the drive and telling it to upgrade. Now I have a 14 GB old windows file on my drive, but I can delete that. This comes with both the 32bit and 64 bit versions. I have 64 bit installed and have no real issues besides my old free firewall is not in 64 bit, but that is not Microsoft's fault

Cons: None. It could be cheaper, but they are a company and they need to make money.

Other Thoughts: Just glad I skipped Vista.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks For Me:

Pros: Clean installed 64 bit version to an OCZ Agility 60GB SSD without incident. The OS runs fast, seems very reliable, boots up and shuts down very quickly (20seconds up, 10 seconds down).

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: No matter what anyone says this OS does have a learning curve....I'd have to equate it to Ubuntu Linux in that respect. This version includes "XP Mode" running inside Windows Virtual Machine....the application is availabe directly from the program list and works quite well, albeit much slower than the host OS.

2 out of 5 eggsNot fully cooked yet

Pros: Straight forward installation. 64-bit mode allows RAM over 3GB to be utilized.

Cons: The first annoying thing that I encountered was that the classic mode start menu option has been eliminated. This forces experienced users to use the Vista-like start menu, even if they're happy with the Windows95-like start menu
Much worse, I experienced intermittent application hang. This occurred with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Thunderbird and even the volume controls. MS support was not able to find a solution. So, I switched back to Windows XP Pro. Luckily, I had the forethought to use a new hard drive for the Windows 7 installation.

Other Thoughts: I had a similar problem with Vista within months of it's initial release. I expected that Windows 7 would be reliable with all of the extra testing done this time. I've been using Vista 64-bit reliably for over 8 months now. So, I expect Windows 7 will be really stable and compatible with all its applications after SP1 is released.

Pros: Some subtle UI improvements that are nice (although others are a step back). Much better hardware support than XP x86, through the use of various technologies...64-bit (memory), TRIM (SSD's), DX11 (videocards), new audio stack (sound cards)...maybe a couple others, but those are the biggies.

Cons: Dumps a truckload of data on your drive and there's no (official) way to perform a custom install to lighten to the load. I was using nLite on XP with great success, but vLite is only partially compatible with 7, so I'm kinda stuck with all this junk for the time being. ALL I WANT IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM, NOT THIRD RATE MS APPLICATIONS LIKE IE/WMP AND EVERY PRINTER DRIVER UNDER THE SUN INSTALLED ON MY 80GB SDD.

Other Thoughts: If Windows 2000 had support for modern hardware, I'd still be using it...and even then, a stripped down version of it. An Operating System should be like the ideal government...tiny, handling only basic operations.

Pros: Love it. Way better than Vista. Like the new aero Works great on laptop.

Cons: Had to perform a clean install from Vista Ultimate. Dont like the new video display interface for designating monitors. Loves to turn my fans on sans settings. The fans sap my battery decreasing battery time.

Pros: Great OS... This is what Vista should have been. 32 and 64bit disc versions= Nice...

Cons: The upgrade version has issues from XP.. Kept giving me a key code error. Had to contact Microsoft for resolution. Took about 45 mins on the phone

Pros: Fixes almost all the glitches with vista. Upgraded well. It actually works. Boot up time was chopped in half.

Cons: Took 2 hours to upgrade my old vista OS. But it went well and all my old programs worked. Did have to reinstall my printer.

4 out of 5 eggsRAID and Windows 7

Pros: None yet.

Cons: I bought two copies of Windows 7 to upgrade two RAID 1 equipped XP computers. These MBs were bought in 2006 and 2007. I found that neither MB (both from ASUS) had Windows 7 compatible drivers available. Microsoft Tech Support was no help. The result is either a) buy a new MB for each computer to be able to upgrade these RAID equipped systems to Windows 7 or b) don't upgrade.

The moral of the story.. Make sure YOUR MB has Windows 7 drivers available for all functions BEFORE you buy Windows 7!

1 out of 5 eggsWon't Activate

Pros: Windows 7 itself is awesome and the transfer from XP was pretty painless

Cons: After following the instructions on the box for an XP upgrade (backup XP, do a clean install, reinstall programs, do Windows Easy Transfer) and spending hours getting everything configured I go to activate and it says my product key is only valid for a upgrade not a "clean install". (It says to do a clean install on the box the thing comes in!) I spent over an hour being shunted to 3 different tech support people (who were friendly) and they finally ran a program remotely on my PC that allowed my product key to work. Heaven forbid the disk ever bites the dust and I have to do a reinstall, I'll probably have to go through the same. Every level of MS tech support lectured me that it was only for an upgrade, not a clean install, even though it clearly states in print on the box itself this is what you should do. Oh, and this is a Dell Laptop - real big chance I bought one without a valid XP license, right? For $200 I have to put up with this?

Other Thoughts: MS needs to get its act together on Activation, they've only had about 10 years to get it figured out. I realize they need to prevent people from stealing their software but in this case they wasted over an hour of a paying customer's life.

3 out of 5 eggsshould've waited and got the oem version

Pros: its new ! its so commercial ! its says you can upgrade from all microsoft xp versions on the box !

Cons: i can't get the 64-bit version or the 32-bit version to clean install when i boot my system from cd/dvd to do a clean install, but i can clean install it within 32bit xp with the 32bit upgrade disc only, 64 bit disc won't work !!

Other Thoughts: i like my ubuntu linux, and osx on my macbook.. i still need to call microsoft and give them some customer feed back, im displeased with microsoft at the moment, you should be able to clean install the 64-bit version of windows7 period..

Pros: Looks good.

Cons: I can not "activate" this product. I have tried upgrade option with Vista installed, fails to activate. Tried the dual install method - fails to activate. I am not a beginner with computers and software. This is awful. If somebody has a good answer I'm all ears. Until then this product is a downer.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product.

Pros: Upgraded from Vista business, install time a little over two hours. Only drivers that needed reinstalling were sound/video/mouse and keyboard. Much less of a resource hog than Vista

Cons: Had to work around a bit to get media player toolbar back on the taskbar.

Other Thoughts: Using a Microsoft multimedia keyboard and wireless mouse...not sure why drivers were not supported and needed to be reinstalled. More of a minor inconvenience than a con though.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat Vista Should have been

Pros: Windows 7 starts faster than Windows Vista ultimate and works smoother and more compatible with older hardware.

Cons: I had a small problem upgrading from Windows Vista with my speech recognition software but one call to Microsoft and they resolve the issue I was having with windows 7

Other Thoughts: I liked that it was ship with 32 and 64 bit disc.

1 out of 5 eggsworse than Vista

Pros: it runs. sort of.

Cons: Lets see where to start? I got this the day after release day and have had more problems with it the first week than I've had with Vista ever. For example the mouse keeps disappearing. I would blame this on Fallout 3 but my girlfriend had the same issues writing a term paper. the only way to get it back is to log out and log back in again. That's provided the mouse pointer reappears after ctrl+alt+del, otherwise its reboot time. I spent money on win 7 mainly because people said it was supposedly as fast as XP. It is not. I think seeing this on a netbook might actually make me cry.

Other Thoughts: hopefully Microsoft will come out with a service pack soon that fixes the bugs. In the end its a new OS so maybe they will get the bugs out at some point.

Pros: installation of the OS was simple. Hooking it up the network was easy. I purchased the WHS due to having a lot of extra parts laying around due to a recent upgrade.

Cons: WHS doesn't like Win7 64 bit with the auto back-up, but the manual backup is just fine.

Other Thoughts: no need for a e/sata HD when you have this product.

Pros: It is faster and uses less memory than Vista

Cons: My system passed the upgrade adviser tests but After the upgrade almost none of my aps worked and windows update would not run. i tried a fresh install and I could not get my outlook 2007 or Autocad 2009 to work. After a week of on and off work, I went back to Vista.

Other Thoughts: I wish I waited but the good reviews tricked me into thinking things would be different.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: FAST shipping!
Easy install over Windows 7 64 Bit RC version, zero problems there.
Windows 7 has faster start up, and faster shut down.
It has a wonderful GUI.
Comes bundled with tons of drivers, so settting up printers, scanners, etc. is a snap.
Smooth running, great features, and setting up home network is a snap! Personal, customization of the GUI is so much better than XP.

Cons: "World of Goo" does not work in a 64 Bit environment!
"Command and Conquer" works, but has some rather interesting graphic quirks. Call of Duty 1 does not work in 64 Bit Windows 7. Haven't tried COD 2, 3 yet.

Other Thoughts: I had been running the 64 Bit RC version of this since it came out, I loved it then, and I love it now. Also I have not tried XP Mode yet either, don't know if I ever will?

Pros: I've been using Windows 7 since it's RC and I cant say enough great things about it.

Cons: Only thing I can say about it that I do not like is it took so long to get here, but here we are, so everything is ok.

Other Thoughts: If you are scared of Vista and still on XP, think about upgrading to Windows 7. You will not be sorry you did.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 = Right up there with XP

Pros: I have not the highest end hardware in my PC but it does the job, and this OS doesn't seem to mind that fact. Fast boot, hassle free, easy to instal, easy to understand layout. Includes an XP ready tool so yo can easily run XP programs. FINALLY

Cons: Blue screened once, but thats my fault for overpowering my hardware. DO YOUR RESEARCH: get the windows 7 upgrade advisor (free from Microsoft) before buying any version of this. I did the other way around by getting this version then looking at upgrade advisor. Whoops, can't just upgrade, gotta do a clean install. Thats the only major flop on Microsoft so far. I got a great deal so I wasn't too bumed that I had to get Win 7 HP first but still, it would have been nice to know.

Other Thoughts: All my programs and games run faster than ever, nothing out of my stupidity causes problems. This knows how to work with you, not for you. Get it, but know you can hassle free first. PLEASE

4 out of 5 eggsVista Done Right?

Pros: Much better than Vista been running the beta for about 3 months the new install went very easy. I had only win 7 beta in this computer and yet did not have to put in my XP disc to validate. Dont know why but not complaining, after all it was the upgrade.

Cons: The beta ran better than the finished product all though there are more features in the new version

Other Thoughts: I have been reading on some of the blogs about IE8 crashing and so far its true It crashes about 50% of the time I installed firefox and it runs much better than IE8. Funny the beta IE* never crashed cant explain that one

5 out of 5 eggsLooking good

Pros: Not nearly the hog of Vista. Right now it's is faster than my XP. It looks really good.

Cons: I miss the look of my old XP in a place or two but I'm still looking ot see if I can find an option to get it back in those places (I could in Vista so I assume I can here too (but mybe I just just bite the bullet and go with the new stuff?).

Do NOT remove your XP from your machine when you do the upgrade or you will have to re-install it. IT must be there for the upgrade to know your upgrading ... I thought it woudl read the old XP disk and take that but it would not, it made me re-install XP. The instructions tell you this ... if you read them first :)

Other Thoughts: I put it on a Corsair SSD, it is fast, boot is about 25 to 30 seconds, shut down is about 3 seconds ... keep in mind I only have the OS installed ... no other software is on the machine right now. I think this could easily be the best Windows ever, but lets just wait and see how it runs in a year or 2 after I've loaded it with software.

Pros: This version of Windows is one of the best yet. Its navigation is very intuituve. Upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium is, actually, a snap. Just Purchse this software, then click on Windows Anytime Upgrade, and enter the product key the purchased and you are upgraded in about 10 minutes!

Cons: None yet!

Other Thoughts: No matter what OS your are upgrading from, the whole process is quite painless. I've done it XP to 7, Vista to 7, and 7 (Home Premium) to 7 (Professional).

5 out of 5 eggsGood OS

Pros: Clean, fast, Quick install/upgrade.
Both 32 and 54bit versions in package.

Cons: Cant upgrage XP. 64bit version not any gains from Vista 64bit.

Other Thoughts: Happy with Win 7. It will be much better for my customers over Vista.......especially the 32bit version.

I tested the "ultimate" beta/rc for about 8 mos and the Win 7 pro and home premium versions are really all everyday users will ever need.

Upgrading XP results in a full/fresh install so be careful.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Windows 7 is by far the best operating system I've ever used. I ended up installing it twice and get it fully functional in under 2 hours.

Bought the Professional version to use XP mode.

Has tons of support for 64-bit and multicore.

Overall, just awesome.

Cons: Definitely the price. Luckily, I got half off for using the RC.

A lot of software doesn't seem to want to work in XP mode because it's in virtual mode. Such as WMM and a few other editing programs.

Those are my only gripes of Windows 7.

Other Thoughts: Wish this had been what Windows Vista was.

Didn't notice much of a difference from the beta until now.

Definitely worth buying.

Oh and Newegg was awesome once again.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat OS but........

Pros: Pretty. Pretty Fast. Pretty Good Price. Nice updates and features

Cons: Buy the full version.................because:
Clean install with the upgrade has a real catch if you built a new system or want to use a new hardrive with the upgrade version.

Other Thoughts: In order to do a clean install with a new hard drive using the upgrade version, MS expects you to install your old OS first and then overwrite it with the upgrade which is a serious waste of your precious time.
Their is some work arounds posted on the net, but they are a pain too........... buy the full version

4 out of 5 eggsNice O.S.

Pros: Super fast shipping! Got it on sale, ordered it right before the offical release day, and it got here so fast, I couldn't believe it!
It's slick looking, it's 64 Bit, it runs my system nice, smooth and fast. Programs load quick. Home network setup is a snap! I love the new GUI on Windows 7! I am still learning, and exploring all that I can do with it, and haven't tried out XP mode yet.
As for XP, it was real good, and it still is, but Windows 7, with the right system, is sooooo much nicer to work with!

Cons: "World of Goo", does not run on 64 Bit, what a bummer!
I wish the "Bubbles" screen saver had some different settings to mess around with!

Other Thoughts: I will be writing another review, once I get all my games, photoshop, Bryce 5.5, Painter 10, etc. loaded, and once I start using XP mode, if I do, and we shall see how those run on this new O.S.

5 out of 5 eggsNewegg is the best

Pros: So this isn't so much a review for Windows 7, but rather how Newegg handled my situation.

Windows 7 is great, I've been using it since the beta went public and have loved it since.

I preordered Windows 7 Professional upgrade back when Newegg and others had the half price sale. I was anxiously awaiting its arrival all summer, it arrived as promised on release date, 10/22/2009. Problem is, some genius thought it would be a good idea to send these packages in a bubble mailer. Well an elephant apparently sat on it while in the custody of UPS. Not really sure why UPS employs elephants to begin with, but that's another story. Anyways, the package and contents were completely destroyed, the 32 bit install disc wasn't too bad, but the 64 bit disc was actually fractured from the hub to the edge of the disc. In over 12 years of ordering things online, this is the first damaged package I've personally ever seen, it does happen, albeit rarely...

Cons: ...

Other Thoughts: With 8GB of RAM there is no way I'm ever going back to a 32 bit OS. I told Newegg that day what had happened, they processed a claim on my behalf, and the next day a new package was on its way to me. I received it yesterday 10/27/2009. All is well now, thanks so much Newegg, you really stand behind your reputation. That's hard to find these days, and I assure you, we all appreciate it.

Any company can deliver products fast and at a good price, however, it's times like these when you know why so many people choose Newegg. It's their customer service that really makes the difference.

Even if I find better prices elsewhere (which is rare) I still order from Newegg for exactly this reason.

Thanks a bunch, you guys are the best.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent OS!

Pros: I have waited for a wonderful MS Operating System to upgrade all my household computers away from MS XP Pro for years now. Stable, Quick, Innovative, and a completely wonderful interface.

Cons: None whatsoever, no driver issues with new and semi-legacy hardware across multiple platforms from an Acer Aspire One netbook to a core-i7 custom built machine and 3 other machines.

Other Thoughts: Mac eat your heart out and go cry in a corner.

4 out of 5 eggsHas Bugs but workable

Pros: This O/S is quicker than XP I am still getting use to it but I am glad I made the switch

Cons: Has Bugs, be prepaired to spend time setting up your system if you are going from XP to Win7 The biggest bug is setup, will not ask you where you want to set it up and has problem when you enter your key code. To work around just cancel out after you get the invalid key code message. A lot of you'r software will need upgrades to run, make sure you have a current virus program. NIS let me update to 2010 from 2009 I am still working on getting everything set up 3 day later, happy computing.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you have time or a good computer person to help you out

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 7

Pros: This is an improvement over VISTA! This is a great upgrade for those who already have VISTA. There is an XP mode which may help some XP users to some extent.

Cons: As with VISTA you will have to re-install all software if upgrading from XP. Some of it may work if you can find the drivers.

Other Thoughts: I have been an XP fan, never liked VISTA. But it is time to move on and Windows 7 seems to have all of VISTA's pluses without the drawbacks. The user interface is more intuitive, more like XP. Don't forget to backup all files before upgrading.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat OS, questionable price

Pros: Although most people consider Windows 7 to be the same thing as Vista (so did I until I installed it), there are some very nice advantages to 7 that most people do not realize.

Here are the most notable:

Backup and Restore - this feature allows you to easily and quickly make a backup image of your current system configuration over the network, onto a hard drive, or on a DVD. You can also make a system repair disk. Vista had nothing like this.

You can set what you want to be displayed on the start menu - I don't know why Microsoft doesn't do this by default, but the Downloads folder is not displayed on the start menu. You can easily add it by right clicking on the start button, selecting Properties -> Customize.

Multicore support - If you have a quad core, definitely get 7.

Better power modes - You can actually use wake timers without having to manually add them.

Desktop changer - Although this was included with Vista, it was only on Ulti

Cons: Overall, I don't see many cons. There are only two major ones in my opinion.

UAC mode is still rather annoying. Even at the lowest setting it still pops up quite often. At lowest setting it claims to only notify you if a program wants to make "changes to my computer," but programs that would seem to not make any changes at all will request permission.
However, this is really the fault of the programmers who made the software (although obviously it's not their fault if the software was made before Windows 7 came out).

This is the biggest issue for me: it costs $199.99 just for the upgrade. Let's be honest. Windows 7 is a lot better than Vista, but it is still, in technical terms, an incremental change. In my opinion the retail version should sell for $199.99 and the upgrade should sell for $100. Come on, most of the people upgrading will probably be Vista users, and they paid good money for a flawed product. I think it's only fair to charge an incremental upgrade

Other Thoughts: This is what Vista should have been. It's a solid operating system that has very good driver support, features, and aesthetics. I am rating it 5 eggs because I never rate the actual product on price or previous versions; it is a very good operating system that lives up to its claims...it's too bad that the computer world had to suffer through (and waste who knows how much money) to get to this point.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Stable, fast, easy to install and fun to use.

Cons: It's from MS and way overpriced.

Other Thoughts: Very pleased with the performance. Installed evaluation copy on a 4 year old system with XP and it runs great. Built new system to run 64 bit version.

5 out of 5 eggsA Nice upgrade

Pros: Much faster than Vista. The same speed as XP ( if not a bit faster) with the Vista interface. The time to install this upgrade from XP to Win 7 was less than 30 minutes.

Cons: Some Vista owners may ask themselves what's the difference.

Also not all programs that say Windows 7 Ready will work....yet. I have issues with Trend Micro locking up my system. Had to remove it and use a different program. But thank goodness for Windows Homeserver to restore my system to a fresh state.

Other Thoughts: Win7 says you can run XP in a virtual mode, but you will have to download the VM program from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
Win7 will rename the Windows directory as Windows.old. You will need this to run XP VM and if you delete this folder you can not run XP Vm. it will run XP like a new install with no programs loaded, or security updates. It's just like when you installed a fresh XP OS. You will have to re-install all your XP programs. Also it will only run XP on one processor no matter how many processors you have.
