Good, but there's a catch
- Pros: Upgrade version is significantly cheaper than full retail version. Some users of Vista may not notice all the changes, but it really is a better OS in nearly every way. Upgrade can be used to do an in-place upgrade of systems currently running Vista. Upgrade works for Win XP users, too, but there's a big "gotcha."
- Cons: Some users of Vista may not notice all the changes. There isn't much to differentiate it from Vista for many casual users. Not as versatile as the full retail version.
- Other Thoughts: Upgrade can be used by Win XP users, but it requires a clean install, asks to insert old XP disc during install to verify you have a legit copy of XP before proceeding with installation. You should really do a backup before upgrading anyway, but this forces your hand and adds a few extra steps (and a lot of time) to the process. If you want to do an install on a machine that doesn't have XP or Vista already installed, apparently you have to install one of the older OS's first and then install Win 7 Upgrade.
To upgrade Win XP you'll have to do a backup of your system before wiping your old XP installation if you want to save your stuff. Importing an XP backup into Vista or Win 7 requires you to download a special backup restoration app from MS that can read backups created by Win XP.
Outstanding OS
- Pros: Runs smoother than Vista on the same machine
Driver support for tons of devices built in and more already posted by manufacturers. New Taskbar with AeroPeek Solid OS, very stable from the beta all the way to RTM!
- Cons: There's nothing that I can see as a con yet other than the number of versions.
- Other Thoughts: I've been running Windows 7 RTM since the day they released it to Technet. I admit that I didn't have issues with Vista once drivers started coming out for it, but, Windows 7 far exceeds it on day one.
Microsoft has been making a lot of changes lately and Windows 7 is a huge step in the right direction for them in getting back in touch with the consumer.

Lot's of handy additions
- Pros: Version 7 has a lot of handy additions over Vista. It's worth the upgrade price to me. Upgrade itself took about 10 minutes of keyboard time and about 2 hours of unattended computer time.
- Cons: Haven't yet used Bit Locker To Go and my motherboard, although fairly recent, doesn't have TPM to allow full use of Bit Locker.I have about 100 programs/apps and only two took time: Microsoft's OneCare is not compatible with Ver 7 and had to be deleted. Canon MX850 ethernet connection required work (USB connection was good to go after conversion).
Completly Happy
- Pros: This OS is MUCH faster than Vista. It has yet to crash on me even in the Beta version when i was just running random drivers instead of 7 Drivers. I have ran XP drivers and Vista drivers. Some with better luck than others but not once has it crashed or locked up where i had to turn it off and back on.
- Cons: So far the only Con i can find is having to pay for this over Vista. Vista was SO bad everytime i sat down in front of a PC with it i just wanted to throw it in a lake.
To use the upgrade you must have windows of sometype loaded on the PC. No more of boot disc and provide verification later like in the old days where you could get a CLEAN install from an upgrade by providing an XP or Vista disc.
- Other Thoughts: I have read some of the other reviews on the lowest rating and im not sure why people are having problems with this product, so far its been great for me and I am planning on purchasing over 200 copies in the next year to upgrade all the PCs i have been forcing XP on for the past years.
A major improvement
- Pros: Was running Vista Ultimate and wanted a new install (not an upgrade), no problem using the less expensive upgrade disk; a 100% flawless install. Win 7 is much more intuitive than Vista and has a luxurious feeling; I am very satisfied so far. I built my water cooled computer 2 1/2 years ago and just upgraded to an Intel E8500 (from a E6600) on my EVGA 680i mobo w/ an EVGA 8800GTX. Flashed the EVGA P32 bios and installed all latest drivers from EVGA and had not a single issue, none, nada.
Forget what any of the naysayers are moaning about, Win 7 is a major improvement. Cheap? nah, but consider what you are getting. Loads quicker and feels very very stable.
