An Outstanding OS
- Pros: This operating system can be defined as having the look of Vista (but sleeker) with the reliability of XP, and more user-friendly features and simplicity than either of them! I've been using the RTM (final version) since the middle of July, and it's been a really smooth operation. Pretty quick startup/shutdown, decreased resource consumption. I've had probably only 4 'hangs' over 4 months, but all of them recovered - no freeze, no BSOD. These were before its official launch and more compatibility/stability updates have since been released also.
Another great thing is its ability to detect hardware and find the appropriate drivers. I just ran clean installs of Win 7 on a few different computers for family, and I was impressed at how quickly and easily it found drivers for ALL hardware. Even on my own computer, it managed to make a printer work that had trouble being installed on XP (maybe even Vista) without a CD.
And, as a Windows OS, it's definitely full of customization options
- Cons: The only thing I may have come across is the Windows Homegroup association for sharing computers' files over a network, with other computers in your Homegroup. When I've enabled this on a computer, it seems that any computer on the network (whether in the Homegroup or not) has been able to see files shared by the Homegroup computer. Even if I set the files to be read-only, they were modifiable/deletable by other computers on the network.
I managed to get around this using advanced file sharing. And come to think of it, I may have figured out *right now* why this happened, it may not be a Windows issue at all... I'll have to test it out tonight!
- Other Thoughts: The driver-finding ability of Win 7 is a big thing for novice users - even if it isn't the brand name driver, 95% of the time Win 7 finds a Microsoft driver that still does the job. Meaning that even if you're a tech newbie, you're generally covered by this OS' ability to make all your internals work!
If you have Vista, you'll be pleased with the change. It's an upgraded Vista, with snappier response. Sure, my speedy desktop is always speedy, but even my laptop shows increased battery life, quicker responsiveness, and lower fan speed. The difference was definitely noticeable right off the bat.
If you have XP, it's a pretty stable OS and making the jump to Win 7 will provide you with more of a visual upgrade rather than a performance/responsiveness upgrade. You will, of course, get to tap into all of the new features and simplicity that are a part of Win 7!
I posted this entire review under the Win 7 Ultimate system builders' product, but I wanted retail buyers to know the same
Ecellent Needed Change
- Pros: Quick responses, excellent utilization of dual core processors for delegating tasks, great compatibility with XP-based software. XP Mode is useful for some programs. Clean look and simple to use. A definite improvement over Vista.
- Cons: XP Mode not good for games but to be expected.
- Other Thoughts: Though I havent used the bit locker encryptor yet it will definitely be useful for those with the need to secure files. While the XP mode doesnt do well with games it does work well with other programs. Also you can set up programs individually to run in certain compatibility mode (i.e. XP SP 2, Vista, etc.) Would strongly recommend doing this and the price is worthwhile to go with Ultimate instead of Professional. If you are still running XP switch to 7 as it is worthwhile, however have at least 3 gigs of ram to keep the system running smooth, will be fine with 2 but a buffer of 3 gigs for safety.

Long Live XP Pro 64-bit
- Pros: Better than Vista
- Cons: Can't configure the way I want it to look and feel, can't make it look and feel like windows 95, can't add up button to windows folders, can't add cut, copy, and paste buttons to windows folders, can't get rid of the side bar when viewing folders, can't have two windows open at the same time using their own taps, can't right click and select all, can't use quick launch for personal folder, icons on task bar have no color...
- Other Thoughts: My new thinkpad came with windows 7 and I absolutely hate it, it is very hard to figure out how to use it with any efficiency so I ended up buying a copy of XP 64bit to use with my new AMD Turion II processor.
It seems that microsoft does not want you to be able to configure anything the way you wish, they did the same thing when they came out with internet explorer 7 and they wonder why they are having such a hard time getting everyone to switch over from IE6 to IE8
Better than XP time to move on.
- Pros: Very quick, works instantly, hasn't froze up yet. Autodesk Inventor surprisingly works faster than it did on XP. Everything is compatible that i used with XP (no compatibility issues so far). Everything is a cinch with windows 7. I threw away all my installation disks for printers, usb sticks, etc.. because windows 7 finds them and installs them automatically. Everyone needs to move on from XP and Vista and get Windows 7 already! 5 eggs easily
- Cons: my computer turns on at random sometimes when i have it in sleep, but it goes back to sleep after a minute or so. I never had this happen in XP. Start up is kind of slow but I always put my computer in sleep, so the fast wake up is awesome!
- Other Thoughts: BUY IT NOW!!! MOVE ON FROM XP AND VISTA!
Windows 7, my Idea
- Pros: Windows 7 is by far the best OS I have used as compared to XP.
- Cons: None so far. Wish It came with Antivirus though.
