I'm very happy to retire XP

white Reviewed By: TheJBJ on 10/30/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: This thing installed SUPER fast from a clean install. I was upgrading from Windows XP so I purchased a new drive and formated and istalled this directly to it. Boots pretty quick (make sure you have the most up-to-date bios) and shuts down VERY quickly. I really like the new tool bar, and I prefer the search over the big long menus of programs. Having a REAL backup utility built right into the system and support to burn ISO's is a nice addition. Updates and installs seem to go much faster than they did in XP. I like the indexing service that Explorer does for all of my files, but you have to configure it to index everything-(This could take several hours to several days, but it runs in the background -mine finished in 20 hours for 4 TB's of data) The security warnings are not annoying at all, and I find them to be very helpful. The troubleshooting and help dialogues no longer assume that you're dumb and actually help solve problems.
*NO MORE UNWANTED EXTRA SOFTWARE!!!!
Cons: The new "Librarys" section in the file system is really a plus and minus. The problem is that it automatically finds pictures and music, but if you have a few backups it may not find the most up-to-date version. iTunes finds the Music file and automatically uses that. This took some time to figure out, and I would have loved if a little pop-up had mentioned what the grouping does when you first open Explorer. Also on Explorer, while indexing makes it faster, the default setup and view is not very friendly. It hides a lot of files and then isn't very clear what drive or location that some files are actually on. Since I'm coming from XP this took some getting used to.
All of my Cons were able to be corrected, but they did take me more time than I wanted to spend figuring them out.
Other Thoughts: More Pros: The system found and installed the following in seconds: Video Card, Motherboard tools, ESATA card, Lite-on DVD drive, Canon Scanner, Canon D40 Camera, both of my monitors(and configured them QUICK), my Keyboard, and my Mouse
HOWEVER, even though my printer (Canon Pixma ip4000) is shown to be supported, it took me three tries to get it installed. This is partly because you need to install the printer software while it's turned off and THEN hook it upto the computer. This only took a few minutes, and it was the only hardware issue I had.

The video card drivers were the most impressive. It not only picked the correct and NEWEST driver, it also installed the NVIDA Tools so that I could manage the card and my motherboard. I had my card and MB overclocked in about an hour from install. I build my computer about 2 years ago and I still get the following performance indexes: video and gaming 7.1, CPU and Ram both got 6.9 and HD got 5.9. I'm running a gforce 9600 and intel quad

Windows 7 64bit OEM

Pros: Easy to install and much easier to locate and install drivers required for your system. Much faster bootup and shutdown than Vista Pro or XP. Spent little effort getting the internet established or printer online. So far I've been impressed with the building a new system (from the ground up) using this Windows OS. From my experience, it's been the easiest one yet. Windows 7 has a better interface than Vista and the they have toned down that annoying Gestapo program in Vista that requests verification for practically everything you do. I'm very pleased with this product.
Cons: Yet again another interface to get used to, but this one eventually grows on you after a few days of playing find the icon. It seems to be having trouble saving bookmarks to IE8 and Firefox 3.5. It does save the bookmark, but you can't select a folder (if you group them like I tend to) to organize your bookmarks. The work around is to go back to the bookmarks after saving the new one and dragging it to it's proper place.
Other Thoughts: I've always bought OEM Operating Systems to start with a fresh system. This sort of purges those old "no longer used" programs. Those upgrade versions are more expensive and require you keep an earlier Windows Operating System CD.

Pros: Very Good OS, its a much a much improved version of Vista, not as many annoying pop-ups and does not nag you too much
Cons: Its not free
If your coming from XP or even vista, the layout might be difficult to grasp, but it is easy to learn(for me at least) this might be a downside for people who are not very tech savvy

Might be the best OS Microsoft has ever made

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Very good OS. Runs great. I've used it on multiple computers (for family members etc.) and no matter the hardware it runs very well. Boots quickly with a usable desktop right away. This is what I had hoped Vista would really be like. This will finally put XP in its long-overdue grave! I keep discovering new shortcuts and features that make life easier, well computer life anyway. Hardware support is incredible.
Cons: I haven't experienced a single thing yet that is a true negative.
Other Thoughts: It has become fashionable to hate Microsoft, but when they do something right they deserve the proper credit (i.e. Office). Vista was not a bad OS, it was just incomplete in terms of advancement from Windows XP. I ran Vista Ultimate for almost 3 years and really liked it, but Windows 7 is far and away better. Get the 64-bit version, and 7 Pro is good enough! Do not waste your money or life using the 32-bit, unless you have a 32-bit processor but then you sir or ma'am need to buy a new computer.
