Easily a Must-Have!

Pros: Blazing fast startup. Shutting down takes under 10 seconds! Windows 7 also installed all of the drivers I needed right off the bat. May or may not be the case for you.

The Windows Update for 7 also notifies you of updates for your devices and hardware, such as your graphics card**. The interface is very friendly, picking up the good parts from Vista and XP.
Developers of the hardware have to send the driver updates to Microsoft in order for it to be in the Windows Update database. I noticed that I was getting updates for my nVidia graphics card through here, which is pretty nice.

A new, major improvement is the taskbar. Aside from preview windows, any pinned programs will have their 'tabs' inside the pinned icon. All programs will take up less space than previous iterations of Windows; tabs now only show icons, but will widen a sliver to show how many iterations (or windows) of that program are open. This allows the taskbar to be clean and organized.
Cons: We've had to wait too long for the true successor to Windows XP to arrive.
Other Thoughts: This is what Windows Vista was supposed to be. Unless you are a security technophile, you don't really need to get Ultimate; Professional has everything a gamer, media user, or office employee would need.

My Windows 7 PC Build:
Computer Case: Antec Nine Hundred Two
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 (D0) socket 1366
RAM: 6GB (2 x 3GB) Corsair DOMINATOR DDR3
Motherboard: Asus P6T6 WS Revolution
PSU: Corsair HX750W
HDD1: WD Raptor 70GB 10000 RPM (Boots Windows 7 Professional RTM from this)
HDD2: Hitachi 7200RPM 1TB
Monitor: LG W2361V-PF
Video: MSI N295GTX (GTX 295 Rev. 2)
Sound: RealTek HD (On-board audio; to be replaced by 192KHz sound card soon.)
Speakers: Logitech Z-5500
Headset: Creative HS-1000 (usb)
-------Windows Performance Ratings.... CPU: 7.4; Memory (RAM): 7.5; Graphics: 7.8; Gaming graphics: 7.8; Primary hard disk: 5.8 (You'll need a WD Velociraptor or better to get a relatively higher score for Primary hard disk.)

Pros: Much faster than Vista, a somewhat better in terms for junkware/bloat. UAC is less annoying than when Vista's is enabled.* Seems more stable. Can actually pay h264 video (aka BlueRay) under x64 decently, unlike Vista.

Finally fewer clicks to get to Screen Resolution, this is just stupid in Vista. Also nice options on setting wallpapers, but UI for it is clunky.

At lest they added a lot of options to the new Start Menu, but its still a pain to browse All Programs since is still tiny and doesnt expand.
Cons: Not a major release over Vista since it only contains fixes and an slightly different UI. IMHO, it would have been Vista:SE if not for the horrible wrap the Vista brand received.

New UI is horrable. No classic Start Menu at all, only has an updated and still worthless Vista UI. New "Task Bar" and Orb Menu are pretty useless for anyone who doesn't use pictures to identify EVERYTHING. I really cant stand any of the default settings, but I haven't on any version of Windows since W2k.

Transparency on everything pretty much, also cant really be turned off either. Really annoying to see shinny, faded views of everything behind a window in its ugly rounded off corners and title bar.

*UAC on 7 cannot be turned off, only "tuned down" so it doesn't prompt as often.

Seriously, the UI is really bad for me, I don't identify things by their icons and I don't hunt/search for things every time I need them, I just want readable text in a menu that's not tiny and shuffles when something is a
Other Thoughts: Unlike Vista, 7 is "workable" for serious professional use.

UI, as bad as it is, is better than Vista's Aero. I'm disappointed with the lack of customizability vs other OSS desktop systems (Gnome, KDE, even XFCE), MS has gotten better, but still a long way to go.

The Ribbon toolbar is used everywhere now, I hate Ribbon, as do many, but I really don't care, I don't use any of that stuff anymore, the alternatives are better.

I'm going to stick with XP, but will use 7 for things I require x64 with.

Why? Why is the Start Menu so small??? "Yes, we have huge LCD monitors now that are 20 plus inches, lets make it so tiny that it only covers the lower left corner so everybody can see the pretty wallpaper better all the time" :S

great OS

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Windows 7 is a very nice OS. I came from Vista 32 bit and wanted to try 64 bit of Windows 7. So far no problems. OS installed in about 35 minutes. All of my hardware had 64 bit drivers and windows installed the appropriate driver, even though it was an older version. I downloaded all 64 bit drivers that I needed before I installed the OS. Seems faster than Vista and I really like having a 64 bit OS. NIS 2010 works fine with it as well as UT3 and other programs that I have. A greeting card program that I have had since 2001 works perfect. New Egg did an awesome job of getting the OS shipped to me.
Cons: None so far.
Other Thoughts: If you are unsure about buying the OEM version, rest assured it runs as well as the retail version. Save yourself the money and buy OEM. You may not get Microsoft support or the retail package, but there is plenty of info on the web that can assist you. Some of the best support comes from other users.
