4 out of 5 eggsClean Install

Pros: Second Windows 7 (OEM new build) install. No problems. All devices found and system came right up. Second SSD boot drive install. Come up fast, shuts down even faster. XP takes forever to shut down, 7 shuts down in around 20 seconds.

Cons: It wasn't free. Steep learning curve.

Other Thoughts: Sorry to see XP go. It was and is a great OS

5 out of 5 eggsOperating

Pros: This is one of Windows better operating system and I have said that from the first day they introduced it. I prefer the 64 Bit version, but when restoring older computers the best thing out there is Windows 7 32 Bit unless you have an AMD processor v Intel. AMD went to 64 Bit before Intel and this will play a valuable part in your selection of OS's for a rebuild.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Wish that Microsoft would drop the pricing on Win 7 to a level that is more affordable that Win 8. To me this shows which one is the better OS by the price. Microsoft is practically giving Win 8 away.

5 out of 5 eggsW7x32 Home Premium SP1 OEM

Pros: Windows 7 has up to date features to support recent HW and SW advances.

Cons: Hides so much of the old and familiar XP interfaces.

Other Thoughts: Used in an updating operation to breathe new life into a 5 yr old EeePC along with an SSD to replace the existing HDD for some modest performance gains.

5 out of 5 eggsWIn 7

Pros: I have used Win7 Pro for over a year.. with Win 8 out I wanted to get my kids 7..

Win 7 is stable compared to Vista and the compatibility mode works great compared to Win XP - even though this OS is pretty stable

Cons: No cons at this time

5 out of 5 eggsWin 7

Pros: Works great, when you find the right combination.
Works in a Northwood 2.4, ABIT AI7, Power Color AGP HD 2600 Pro, 1gig and a WD 320 machine.
Loads fine except the audio driver, which I found & now works fine.
No other issues with that setup

Cons: Will not load with an AGP HD 4350-HDMI card, hits a problem and unexpectedly shutsdown and restarts over & over again. Can't try any drivers because it never stops restarting. Nothing else is connected except the PS/DVD drive.

Other Thoughts: Using Win 7 with older hardware is iffy at best, some video card/Motherboard combinations may not go well together-I know, I now have a spare 4350 HD card.

2 out of 5 eggsRejects Product Key

Pros: It's windows 7, as soon as I get it activated, it is fine, this is the next xp, we'll have to wait for windows 9 to have the next usable version I guess since 8 isn't something I'd subject anyone I like to.

Cons: Installs fine, then rejects product key. This is annoying, requires calling microsoft, here: 1-800-936-5700 to get new product key, one that hopefully works this time, they aren't in during the weekends, waste of time, how can they mess up something so fundamental and basic. Some forum threads online blame it on using an upgrade disk but this is the full version, MS just messed up it looks like.

Other Thoughts: First time I've ever installed windows and had the product key rejected, and this is a new, taped, in box installer disk. The whole point of buying these is to have a legal copy, what's going on here?

I only install windows for clients/friends, but stuff like this makes me want to go running back to my free linux desktops, where there are no product keys to mess with, Debian in my case. But doesn't meet everyone's use cases, stuck with having to spend time on phone with MS, not my favorite way to while away the hours.
