4 out of 5 eggsIt's Windows

Pros: It's not Windows 8. Still not ready to move to Win8 after reading the comments here and elsewhere.

Cons: If you try and move your outlook IMAP .ost file to another HDD location using Outlook 2013, I've yet to find a way for it to work. All the complicated instructions assume Windows 8 OS. More of an issue with Outlook 2013 though.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: I love this os, very neat and easy to use, i started with windows 95, and there have only been slight, but satisfying changes, i used windows 8 for about a weak and i dropped it because there were too many changes that were not satisfying
Go With Windows 7

Cons: none so far, been using this os since it came out and i love it

Other Thoughts: Definitely love this over windows 8, let micrsoft know how mutch they messed up, don't buy windows 8, buy windows 7

4 out of 5 eggsStill the standard

Pros: It has more of a familiar feeling than Windows 8.

Cons: It's unnecessarily bloated, closed source, and likes to update at the most inconvenient times.

Other Thoughts: I don't like the direction that Microsoft, Apple, and Ubuntu are going... I prefer the look, feel, and efficiency of Debian, but half of what I need it for doesn't work right out of the box like it does in bloated Windows. Because I don't have time to troubleshoot, I have to stick with Windows :(

5 out of 5 eggsThe Gold Standard in Windows

Pros: If you're going to be running a Windows platform, then this is still the version to get. Windows 8 still has yet to surpass this version in terms of quality or stability. Great for gaming, even when running old titles that were designed for XP. An all around great performer.

Cons: Be cautious if doing any sort of customized load. I am using an SSD as both the O/S drive, and as a cache drive for a spinner (the SSD has two partitions). This configuration required two installations of Windows 7: the first on the spinner to configure the SSD, and then the second installation on the SSD itself. System directories left on the spinner cannot be deleted outside of the Windows 7 installer program; if you follow a similar path, then be sure to format the HDD from within the Windows installer.

Other Thoughts: Get it while you can, at least until Windows 9 is released. The age-old curse of "get every other version of WIndows" still appears to be true.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Windows to Date

Pros: The five stars does not represent a *perfect* OS, but it is the best choice for a Windows desktop. If you're considering this OS at all, that should already have been a prerequisite, so I won't get into petty pot shots about android, mac or other OS distros. Program compatibility is excellent. Administrative tools are good. Mouse & keyboard interface are great. Basically, it's not Windows 8, with massive compatibility issues and a design that actually makes life MORE DIFFICULT if you want to use mouse & keyboard. What were they thinking?

Cons: Like all Windows, the registry will clutter over time. This one does less so than other iterations of the OS, but it's still going to happen.

Other Thoughts: there's no reason to buy the ultimate edition anymore if you're only concerned about working in English. this edition comes with both mediacenter and the ability to host Remote Desktop (RDP). Homegroup is more useful as well at this point because Win7 is more widespread, and even the horrid Win8 is backwards compatible with it. That said, homegroup is still of only limited usefulness as opposed to a typical smb share network.

5 out of 5 eggsWin 7 works & installs fast

Pros: * usually installs in under an hour
* it just works
* normally finds all the hardware
* Cheap price for OEM builders

Cons: * Windows still ins't free like linux?

Other Thoughts: Win 7 really saved me from being a M$ hater. I'm a linux guy but win 7's stability and fast install means I'll let my employees have it on their desktops.

We do a lot of cheap-o build your own systems and odd-ball upgrades using spare parts, so sometimes I need another license. It's totally worth the $ to just buy win 7 instead of re-using a computer's OEM WinXP key that's on the sticker.

4 out of 5 eggsStill The Best

Pros: Still the best OS for desktop and laptop computers that do not have touchscreen capability. I've contacted MS and they still want $299 for a retail version. If you don't need the support, stick with this OEM version. This is exactly like retail, just without the free support from MS.

Cons: MS is quickly removing references for Windows 7 from their web site. They've even made it nearly impossible to find widgets. If you find a site that has them, be very careful, as many are virus/malware laden. They still want full retail for Windows 7.

Other Thoughts: Windows 8 is another Vista. PC sales are down across the board, and they just don't seem to want to continue with any non-critical update support of Windows 7. I may need to pick up a few additional OEM copies of Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate, just so I have some future expansion options.

If you haven't used Windows 8 yet, I highly recommend using a free VM program like Virtual Box to play with it before you dive headlong into the abomination known as Windows 8!
