Adequate if you are willing to work around some problems
- Pros: - Can create playable DVD's with menus to your content
- Pan and zoom feature for documentary style video of any still picture - Easy to use interface, very clear about what stage of the video process that you are in from capturing, to editing, to creating a final DVD - Easily segregates any video source into easily selectable scenes automatically - Lot of flexibility with titles in the video, they can move up and down or side to side, stay static, fade in and out as you decide - Can edit your video down to the frame by frame level - Quickly plays back any video that you are working on at any point in the editing process in small or full screen with all sounds incorporated - Very inexpensive tool for taking a lot of still pictures and making a birthday party video for a family member or even a memorial video for a family member that has passed away - Allows two tracks of video to be integrated simultaneously and two tracks of sound.
- Cons: - This software requires a quad processor computer with a 64 bit operating system and 6 Gb of system memory or more to work especially for a large project say 500+ photos with lots of different songs playing in background and lots of titles throughout
- Even with a powerful computer it can be a little sluggish at times and seem to get hung when you are trying to scroll from one end of your project to the other very rapidly while you are editing - If you output to an MPEG II file you may not be able to play that file on any other computer unless it has the Pinnacle codec already on it. I never figured out how to transfer codecs from one computer to another. - Sometimes you have to just shut Pinnacle down and bring it back up to get it to work better. It will start to lag and hang up and you can do a save to speed it up and sometimes you just have to shut down and bring it back up. - Too much junk ware that is not needed with this software. Don't waste your time with it.
- Other Thoughts: I've been a Pinnacle Studio fan since version 7 and I fell in love with the easiest video editing software user interface on the market.
Through the years I've done multiple video projects with Pinnacle and presented them to others. I've recently completed a video project for a 30 year class reunion and this software was exactly what I needed for the job. It rendered the DVD's in a very high resolution with menus to go to different parts of the video. This made for a great keep sake for everyone that came to the reunion to take home and watch on their home DVD players on their HDTV's. There are a great number of features that this software supports that I have not had a chance to even touch. It does support chroma key and High Def rendering for blue ray format discs but since I just have a standard DVD writer I couldn't try this out. I would recommend this software to anyone that may have an unsophisticated video project. Its more than adequate for a sophisticated amateur.
For what it's worth...
- Pros: It is affordable for what it does and it does have very intuitive interface. I've found many ways to beat the system with this software. At first use, you may not think you can do much but with enough time playing around with it you can achieve decent editing for the price. I wouldn't call it a piece of junk, but it's close. If you're just getting into editing and you have pretty high patience; give it a try.
- Cons: I've been using Pinnacle since version 9 (now with 11) and every version has the same bugs and problems. My computer locks while simply adjusting the time line and, on occasions, involves a hard shut down of the entire computer. Renders will end up choppy or grainy and play back sucks. You may want to research other programs before you come back to this one.
- Other Thoughts: I have always wondered if a beastly powerful machine would run Pinnacle just fine. Something I have not looked into. But if you have the money to have a power monster, spend some dough and get Adobe Premiere or something.
BAD BAD BAD SOFTWARE
- Pros: VERY FEW.
- Cons: More than I have time to mention.... more glitches than actual lines of code.
- Other Thoughts: Pinnacle cannot render itself out of a paper bag. Not being able to correctly render your own project files is pretty pathetic.....
