5 out of 5 eggsCustom Resolutions / Mods backup

Pros: Pioneering full battlefield experience including the ability to use land, sea and air vehicles (pilot anything including jeeps, helicopters and battleships) with up to 64 players in a map... Terabytes (okay, maybe not terabytes, but definitely plenty of Gigabytes) of free mods available with Battlecraft editor for making your own. Desert Combat is the most popular, there's even Galactic Conquest for Star Wars fans. Started playing this game when it came out years ago, and there are still many people playing on the online servers today. Once configured as noted below, simply copy the mods folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods) to back it up and replace after re-installing just the core game.

Cons: No "run" feature without modding?

Other Thoughts: Res: You can set the game to run at any resolution(res) that you'd like. Simply set all the other options in the options menu in game, close the game, then find your profile in your Battlefield 1942 Program Files folder (Win7 64bit path looks like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings\Profiles\Default where default is your profile's name). Once there, right click to edit the properties of the "Video.con" (Copy the file to an alternate location if you're unsure about making changes.) and make it NOT Read-only. Open the file with notepad and change "game.setGameDisplayMode 1280 1024 32 60" so that 1280 1024 is whatever res you want (1280 1024 is custom, 1920 1080 works too) 32 is 32 or 16 bit color and 60 is your refresh rate. Once you're done, save the file, then make sure to change it back to "Read-only" so the game can't change it back. Never use the in game options to change your settings again. Teamspeak Overlay can confirm res when maps load.

4 out of 5 eggsBetter than BF2

Pros: This game has withstood all the time and is still a great game.
I own 3 sets just in case friends come over and want to get online.
There are still plenty of servers and players who get online.
There are also many mods of this game which are really great.
BF Pirates,BG42,BF1918.

Cons: There are too many patches and it would be nice if this game was rereleased with all the patches and mods added in.

Other Thoughts: Single player is pretty much lame and is okay for someone new just to get the feel of the game.
The bots kill you from out of nowhere.

5 out of 5 eggsMemories

Pros: Its Battlefield 1942! This is an amazing deal, comes with all expansions and Battlefield Vietnam. Vietnam has the same graphics engine but is cleaned up and has a more modern feel. Servers are still active and has one of the best large multiplayer war experience. This is where PC gaming really started to take off. Easy to play on older hardware.

Cons: No in game music. When this game was made, that wasn't a big deal. But if you are used to modern games, it will feel very quite. 8-Discs! WOW! Glad DVDs are now the standard haha. Seriously though... wow. Disc 5 is needed to play Vietnam and Disc one for the rest.

Other Thoughts: Really takes me back, the game hasn't aged very well but is still a blast. No modern widescreen support, 1400x1050 works well.

4 out of 5 eggsFun, but confusing

Pros: This is one of the most fun games of all time if you ask me. All this for 10 bucks is a great deal. You still need the demo Wake from online if you still want to play with other demo users, which is probably the most fun way to go.

Cons: Confusing installation for BF Vietnam.
Servers online say "wrong version" but without giving you any information on how to get the correct version, nor does it tell you what version you have or what you need.
Some servers require punkbuster, which I installed, but don't have information on how to enable it, so those servers are out for me too.

Other Thoughts: When installing, there are 8 discs. The first 4 are for BF1942, and installation goes well. #5 has BF Vietnam, then it asks for Disc 2. You need to use 6 instead then. When Vietnam installation asks for 3, use 7. When it asks for 4, use 8.

4 out of 5 eggsBattlefield 1942

Pros: - Great multiplayer
- variety of maps
- fun gameplay
- low system requirements

Cons: - Graphics are aged
- Singleplayer is no good and is best used as practice for multiplayer
- BF Vietnam is meh for me

Other Thoughts: There are still servers running this game. I highly recommend the Desert Combat mod (it's free). EA still runs a server with this mod and it still gets full during the weekends, with up to 48 players. Another popular mod is Desert Combat Final, which is similar to the first mod but with better sound and visual effects.
The physics on this games is great and seeing players flying off after an explosion, is quite comical. Most PC integrated graphics made in the last two years can run this game without an add-on GPU.
