4 out of 5 eggsWorks well with Sony HD camcorders

Pros: Software has several features and allows for fairly detailed editing. Works well with HD format (AVCHD) from camcorders. Has 5.1 channel audio, several themes, etc. Also allows for the ability to down-convert AVCHD fomrat to standard definition so you can burn DVDs. I did this for my kids' school play and was able to make several copies for other parents.

Cons: Software is complicated, and although it has somewhat of a turtorial at start-up, it is not clear what steps you have to go through in order to covnert your movie to standard definition (readign the manual more thoroughly would probably help ;-)). I only use it every so often, so more frequent use would probably help as well.

One other issue is that I have trouble getting the software to recognize my RAID-1 configuration. I like to store our videos on the mirrored drive but find it will only save ot the "C" drive and then I have to manually copy it over later.

Other Thoughts: Overall, very happy with the purchase. Bought it from Newegg at a good price and would do so again. Use it in conjunction with our HDR-SR10 Sony HD camcorder. Gave it 4 stars instead of 5 becasue of complexity. Works as advertised.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful and Stable

Pros: Very powerful. You can do just about anything you want. I did not find any limitations, except for extra features available on upgrades to this product.

Cons: Not intuitive to use.

Other Thoughts: Not intuitive to use. It takes a while to learn how to use it. Once you go through the learning process you will really appreciate the product. It never crushed on me.

4 out of 5 eggsreview sony

Pros: I got this as a gift for someone else. Nice product and newegg.com is a great place to shop and I am very satisfied with newegg.com.

Cons: My order for this product had a $30 rebate just for newegg.com customers that Sony underhandedly wants to keep for themselves, reason being is that the upc label that I cut from the box is not the original.

Other Thoughts: I'll not buy Sony no more.

5 out of 5 eggsSony Vegas 8

Pros: Pinnacle Studio 12 is a huge consumption of system resources and at this time, my system is not compatible; however, Sony Vegas Studio 8 Platinum is not that big of a hog and my video can be edited without a hitch. I am still learning this product, but am overall pretty satisfied.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Sony Vegas Studio 9 Information - Release August 2008

3 out of 5 eggsGood Product...Somewhat disappointed

Pros: I really liked this product. It is easy to use, but also powerful. A person can make a movie after only a few hours of use. It works wonderfully on my Q6600 and 8800GT.

Cons: I feel somewhat deceived. I read the latest patch notes before I purchased it thinking I would be able to work in HD with my new Canon HF100. The patch notes suggest that it supports full 1920x1080. Read Carefully! It only READS 1920x1080. It can only output at 1440x1080. One must buy Vegas Pro to be able to output to full HD. This is never plainly stated on their website or the box. I find this underhanded.

Other Thoughts: If you dont need full HD then Vegas Platinum is a great product. Although; with Vegas 9 coming out soon you might want to wait and see what it can do. I may sell my brand new copy of Vegas 8 Platinum to get Vegas 9 if it supports 1920x1080. Why have a great HD camcorder if you can't view your video like it was intended to be viewed?

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Good interface. Similar enough to the high-end programs for what you pay. HD usage is nice if you need it.

Cons: Just little things. Can't figure out how to speed up or slow down clips. Occasionally it will drop audio.

Other Thoughts: Good buy for an independent editor. If you are asking a company to buy for you, go with Adobe Premiere or Final Cut.

1 out of 5 eggsConsumer Warning

Pros: The software is amazing for the price I made several tests with different formats and burned several DVD's and they all look good on a standard TV, if you want HD stick to m2ts (mpeg)

Cons: Envelope was open, the CD had a fingerprint on it and it was scratched covered in lint.

Other Thoughts: I don't know who to blame.

4 out of 5 eggsWay more than I will ever need

Pros: Every time I ask myself "Gee, wouldn't it be cool if it could do XX?" I find that the program can! For the most part, it runs silky smooth even with only 1GB of RAM and a C2D E6400.

Cons: So many features that it is easy to get overwhelmed. The program has crashed a couple of times while trying to do a lot of things at once (likely bumping up to 2GB RAM would help).

Other Thoughts: Starting out with only limited experience with Windows Movie Maker, it took me roughly 6 hours to make a near professional-quality 10-minute video complete with titles, credits, transitions, overlays, etc. Now that I know quite a few tricks, I could likely do this same type of project in 2 hours. Making good movies does take time!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Solid, I have been using the Vegas Movie Studio family of software now for 3+ years and can't recall it ever crashing. Very versatile, for this price, you won't find a program that allows you to edit this well. This program just feels more like a serious editors tool than any of the other brands I've tried in this price range.

Cons: The biggest limitation I have found is the inability to place envelopes for the speed of the clip. You can change the speed of the clip overall, but you can't vary it from the beginning of the clip to the end. For example, if you wanted to slow the clip down until the speed was stopped, you have to pay for the full version of Vegas for that ability.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the money

Pros: It has all the features that I would ever need. It is very easy to produce professional looking videos. It also didn't take me very long to learn how to use it efficiently. DVD Architect is very good. I haven't had any problems with it. It works perfect.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I wish DVD architect had a flowchart representation of the menu links like Adobe Encore.
Adobe Premiere Pro is still better but it's $800. For $90, you can't beat this.
Also, Sony released 8.0d which added support for reading 1920x1080 AVCHD video.
