5 out of 5 eggsSmooth Video Editing

Pros: I have tried a few different video editing systems, from Avid to FCP and Corel VideoStudio. This is by far the best: a smooth consistent UI with a program that does not bog down my machine in any way. On a c2d machine with 8GB of memory, it runs without a hitch.

Cons: Usually a bit pricey.

5 out of 5 eggsSince day 1

Pros: I've owned Vegas since the first release as a video editor, it has been faster, more stable... with the abilities to outperform any of it's competition... since that very day. It's included tool set has always been one step ahead and it's interface, though "different", is extremely flexible and intuitive...and that's what an editing software should do...allow YOU, the editor, the ability to edit different programs YOUR way...not the way the software engineers want you to edit.

As a professional video/film producer, shooter, editor of over 40 years experience, Vegas has never failed me... in allowing me to produce a finished product on time, within budget and an extremely satisfied client.

Cons: None...

Other Thoughts: I build my own computers and have for years. The only times I've seen Vegas crash or not perform properly has been traced to hardware issues, mine included. The biggest problem with PC hardware is it's not "controlled" like Apple' any old hardware can be purchased and used to sometimes not very satisfactory results.

Build or buy a good name system with name parts, keep your Windows OS up to date, and you will get better results from Vegas, Premier and the other NLE's in the PC world.

I've used Vegas from the early versions of Windows.. up to Windows 7 Pro....and have no issues, zip, none.

If you are having problems with Vegas, look to yourself, first. A bad carpenter always blames his tools.....

4 out of 5 eggsGood and bad.

Pros: I've have used Vegas since before it was a Sony product. For what it is, it does a good job. It has it's share of idiosyncrasies like any involved software, but for the most part, there are workarounds. I also own Premiere and maybe a half-dozen other editors and use each as needed for what I am trying to accomplish. Sony has it "place in the sun" for much of it.

Cons: Crashes. All editors crash, everyone. Vegas is not different, except a number of the crashes are or could be prevented with a bit tighter coding. Things like rendering, pre-rendering and even playback cause crashes. Not to hard to find out why, should be not to hard to fix them. But, Sony is an awfully large company and Vegas is an awfully small part of it. So, it sets on the back burning most of the time. When it was introduce, I don't know, maybe 15 years ago, it was a rocket ship compared to everything else out there. Now, it waddles along, chirping here, chirping there, and you make do. If Sony wanted it, it could be the #1 semi-pro editor. But, somehow I don't think that is in Sony's plans. Too bad to.

Other Thoughts: Pretty much said everything I want to.

5 out of 5 eggsSony Vegas Pro 12

Pros: I have used Sony Vegas since I was first introduced to it with Vegas 10. I come from the bunch that used Audition for years. I do voice work for a living at and needed something that had less actions to the final render, and also something that could do video, as I voice and produce to many videos for social business tutorials ect. Even thos Vegas comes with Sound Forge, I still use 12 for all audio and video projects, it preforms excellent and fast for both. There is nothing professionaly that cannot be done with Vegas Pro 12. I have been using a copy of pro12 from a friend for the last year, and could not pass up the excellent bundle for the Premium, even tho I already have all the other programs that come with it. Just to have my own copy of Vegas Pro 12 is awesome. If you can't figure something out it has a full tutorial link, and if that doesn't work, there are many people on YouTube that make how to tutorials that tell and show how to do anything, couldn't be easier to learn and use. And unlike some other programs for the same thing out there , vegas pro 12 does not clog up or use too many resources.

Cons: Non that I can think of

4 out of 5 eggsOne At A Time

Pros: Full suite supporting CD, DVD, and Blue-Ray authoring along with the pro Video and Audio editors. At install time Sound Forge immediately recognized my ASIO/Lynx driver and appropriately changed hardware i/o channel defaults. Otherwise, I have not had much time to test -- see install issues in Cons below. My review title is the answer to a customer question solicited in a Newegg email to me. A new/different computer requires re-registration -- but it seems Sony is set up to handle that.

Cons: To their credit SONY anticipates users who (like me) keep media production workstations away from the internet, and therefore allows writing a file at install time that can be taken to another internet connected computer to receive a registration code good only on the offline computer. However, a poorly designed applet for this choked on a laughable field validation error ("." in a user field!) with non-existent feedback to the user. The resulting support incident ("send us screen shots") ground install/registration to a halt for more than a week, but Travis' troubleshooting analysis was accurate. The code and UI design for this install portion looks and feels amateurish; several Moore's Laws back. The pro designers probably get the meatier assignments.

Seeing Vegas Pro Premium for sale on Newegg's Black Friday sales for $$ less than I paid them *the day before* wasn't exactly exhilarating.

For the other customer's question: it seems that, no, you can't have it installed on both your workstation *and* laptop.

Other Thoughts: Rating reflects install/registration and initial functional testing only. More when I have more experience with Vegas Pro workflow.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value for your $

Pros: Lots of bundled software that costs a pretty penny if you buy it separately, and I haven't used many of them yet, but they look very useful. Vegas is the first video editor outside of movie maker I had come in contact back in the day, but I quickly learned how to use it with little help. It is mostly intuitive, but if you don't know how to do something and you want to find out, the web is your friend. Supports lots of file types and renders in most types as well. This is my first Pro version, and I bought it for the advanced masking and subtitle capabilities, so you can make professional subs on DVDs that are not burned into the video. DVD Architect has helped me create very professional looking DVDs in the past, I expect this version to be even better, although it is not as intuitive to figure out how to custom make buttons and how to make things behave, but the pre-made themes can get you started quickly. Never used Sound Forge since I have Audacity, but I'm sure I'll find some use for it.

Cons: It can't make miracles, so your rendering times will depend on the amount of effects you add, the quality of the final production and how powerful your machine is, but I hope you came in knowing that. Also, I wish I could trade the sound utilities for twixtor.

Other Thoughts: If you buy this, first install Vegas and DVD Architect, open them up and go through the registration process for both. If you have a free upgrade to Sound Forge Pro 11, first go to the site the coupon tells you, input the code, download the program, and since you already registered your Vegas Pro software, you should have received an email with the activation codes for your other bundled software including the upgrade code for SFP 11. It took me a while to figure this was the order of things, and unnecessarily installed SFP 10. I do recommend installing your other bundled software, it will come in handy at some point if you are serious about your productions, and I hope you are if you dropped money for this bundle, which BTW I must thank Newegg for offering this and other versions of Vegas at lower prices on its own or bundled with hardware at one point or another. I would have had to spend so much more money to get my hands on this otherwise. There are things I haven't discovered in the Pro version yet, but I find more things, I'll update my review. For example, I remember at some point, pro versions were able to take advantage of using multiple computers to render a video faster, but I don't know if that feature is still there and what the requirements are.

4 out of 5 eggsVegas Pro 12 is my choice

Pros: Easy yet enough depth to handle any task
Excellent audio editing
Will run multiple instances of the program

Cons: Requires good hardware (true of all NLEs)
Only runs on 64 bit machines

Other Thoughts: I have been using Vegas since Version 4. It is my choice of an NLE because the workflow fits my style. I don't advocate changing from another one to Vegas because it is different from most video editor. Vegas originated as a multitrack audio editor and then they added video to it. So moving from audio to video editing was more straight forward using Vegas.
