3 out of 5 eggsSilent Hunter 5

Pros: Graphics-visuals are immersive, you can almost taste the salt spray. Interiors are well done. As with Silent Hunter 3 and 4, it is very mod-able.

Cons: As delivered SH5 is "rough around the edges". I agree with other reviewers that the game needed more refinement prior to release. The manual is a weak detail; particularly regarding how to use the TDC.

The stock game's User Interface is cumbersome

The required connection to the internet is a nuisance, but not a deal breaker.

Other Thoughts: The good news is that the modding community has responded with some key mods that address the control interface, interaction with the crew, and provide a tutorial on how to operate the TDC. Consult the Sept. 2010 issue of PC Gamer for details.

After downloading and installing a few mods, I have an easy to use, powerful User Interface to control my sub that uses the same conventions as SH3 and 4 (it is tweak-able too), I can interact with my crew and issue orders quickly. And best of all, the issue with the "tap dancing" sounds mentioned by others is gone! I now have a game that I can play and enjoy.

The DRM issue- It is stupid, and insulting, but assuming that your internet connection is stable, fast, and SECURE, the DRM works reasonably well.

With the price drop, some mods, and a dollop of your patience, you can have a pretty good little game.

1 out of 5 eggsUnhappy with this product

Pros: Newegg did a great job of delivering it

Cons: Ubi has apparently suspended active support for this product. The game developers have been reassigned to new projects. It is unfortunate because although the game is seriously flawed, it does show much potential. The modding community has done what it could, but many of the problems are in the core code of the game and without the source code, a total fix of the game is not possible.

1 out of 5 eggsSilent hunter 5

Pros: none

Cons: do not buy this game..I didn't even get to finish the second challenge before it locked up and says there is a registeration error and won't play. It tells me that reinstalling might help. It won't reinstall and when I try to uninstall...it tries to reinstall. Ubisoft you have outdone yourself this time...no time or money to make the game correctly?

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great Graphics.

Cons: It's like starting all over again to figure out how to play it. The DVD manual is so blurry you can't read the keyboard shortcuts. Manual is almost worthless. You really have to stumble through the game as it plays to do things until you get so frustrated you quit. Aircraft fly all around you but never attack you.???

Other Thoughts: SH3 was Great. The subsequent games get worse. Go figure. Don't waste your money right now, maybe they will fix it (I doubt it).

1 out of 5 eggsDRM total garbage!

Pros: I'm sure it will be a great game. If I can ever get it to run.

Cons: The UbiSoft DRM is garbage. I've spent 3 hours trying to get this game running with no success. The DRM needs you to be connected to the UBI servers in order to play but the servers are always down.

I've never pirated software in my life. I'm absolutely furious that I paid top $$ for a PC game that won't let me play. This will be the last UBI game I buy unless they change that.

I am hoping that Newegg will let me RMA this absolute garbage.

Other Thoughts: Save your $$.

1 out of 5 eggsBroken, unfinished, a complete con.

Pros: Innovative design, somewhat accurate reproductions of real u-boat interiors.

Cons: far far too many to list completely, but trust me this game is not finished.

Firstly I go slide-show if on anything but THE LOWEST graphic setting, and I run two crossfire hd5770s.

The game crashes randomly in many different situations, I've mysteriously ended up 2 miles inland on the north coast of Africa after just having left the dockyards in Denmark.

Running in the sub will cause "tap dancing" where the sound effect of walking on metal will loop over itself endlessly.

And aside from all these technical problems the game just seems silly. The animations are slow and ponderous, the characters are something of a child's creation. The voice acting for both languages is poor and repetative.

and worst of all, the realism and atmosphere that was the hallmark of the series has all but vanished in favour of an almost comical "FPS meets RPG meets hollywood action movie meets uboat" format.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased every game in this series, and have loved them up until now. This game needed another year of production, and as far as I am concerned it is a con Ubisoft! to sell your game, under the pretense that it is in fact a working, finished product. Shame on you.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware!

Pros: decent graphics

Cons: Your computer MUST be connected to the internet the whole time you play! These games were perfect for commuting or long flights but not any more!

Not "always on" internet connection? No play.

Other Thoughts: I was able to return my copy to Best Buy for this reason. No more Ubi for me until they stop this stupid stuff.
