  • newegg Play songs instead of just learning them. You want to play new songs, but you don't want to labor through tablature or cringe through poorly produced videos. No problem. A video game that’ll get you stage-ready.

5 out of 5 eggsSuperb "game!!"

Pros: This "game" is an exceptional and fun way to learn how to play, or improve on your playing. It's easy to use, easy to follow along, and creates a new method for learning that sets a constant challenge for just about all skill levels.

Cons: A few minor bugs in the software/hardware. Have had to restart the program a handful of times because the USB to audio jack wasn't picking up my guitar. The game is fairly hardware intensive - make sure you've got enough power to push it!

Other Thoughts: Overall this is an exceptional and unique program. As long as your guitar is in good shape and the intonation is good, this is a lot of fun.

Even if you already know how to play, this is still a lot of fun and great for learning new skills and/or improving on some bad habits!

3 out of 5 eggsCould be better

Pros: I've been using the Rocksmith (version 1) software for a while now. The simplicity of the software is fairly good. However, the unlimited configurations to make the software function correctly (on a Windows machine) is daunting for any company. There are multiple things which are beneficial;
1) An interface that tries to juggle many different aspects of playing.
2) A simple interface for people used to tinkering
3) A large assortment of downloadable songs

Cons: The improvement list is long and definitely should be implemented for version 2.
1) Improve the User Interface! For those users that can't stand having to repeatedly mash buttons or click with the mouse to exit the software, you know how terrible version 1 software is. This interface needs a complete overhaul to make it usable.
2) Due to my high level of skill, I find mistakes in the 'tablature' or songs which I could easily modify and fix for myself. Why is this type of feature not available for users? The ability to have user edits in songs would be beneficial for those that use the product. When examining the song 'More Than A Feeling' the tablature is not even close to what is actually played on stage (nor does it sound correct). however, if the user can edit the song information them self, no additional edits would need to come directly from Ubisoft.
3) Provide feedback to users about their skill level. This isn't needed to demean users but to provide feedback to let them know how they compare with other users. The scaling system provides 'some of this type of information but it could be fairly specific like; novice, intermediate novice, beginner, intermediate beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, advanced intermediate, etc...
4) When skill levels get high, why is the software adding notes into the song signature? Make the software sticks to the actual recorded segment and make sure the notes that are showing up are 100% accurate.
5) Make sure a bevy of information is available to users for the next product. Have tutorials about using the software (getting the software operational on a machine) are at the forefront.
6) For those people that don't enjoy 'tinkering' make sure the Interface is as simple to use as possible. Correct the layout and make the interface cohesive.
7) Make sure the interfacing with an instrument is delved into to provide as much useful feedback as is possible.
8) Make sure song additions are easily added to the interface. I did this on more than one occasion and did have difficulty due to the following; a) no instructions were provided b) the information you in the interface was not explained very well. This is something that could easily be fixed.

Other Thoughts: The UI seems to be seriously lacking design consideration. It might help to have the interface arranged in a circular pattern rather than have all those separated screens. Users can easily rest a mouse on the selection they want if it is designed properly.

I find that the issues I encountered were on a recurring basis. Most likely I will purchase Rocksmith 2 and hope that some of these things will have been addressed.

5 out of 5 eggsCOOL Daddy-O

Pros: My boy and I are just getting started with this software.
Simple as it can get. Easy start up and goes up the ladder as you learn.

Cons: Not a single problem as far as I am concerned.

Other Thoughts: Take the time and if you have a friend or family member to use this with it makes it all that much better.

3 out of 5 eggsProblem Solved...

Pros: Uses a real guitar or bass for exercises like game systems offer for their controllers.

Cons: Difficult to navigate initially.

Other Thoughts: My connection issues were caused by connecting the cable to a USD Hub rather than a dedicated USB Port.

4 out of 5 eggsLove this

Pros: My grandson has learned a lot from this game highly recommend for anyone wanting to learn to play guitar.
Bought me and my grandson Fender stratocaster guitars and we are learning .
My grandson is pretty good since getting this and can play a lot of rock songs over his amp . When not playing the game . Rocksmith is a great teacher .

Cons: Kind of pricey but if you shop around you can find for less than$60.

Pros: RockSmith was a Great purchase. My son and I "went in together" for the PC version and an extra cable so we can play at the same time. We each have our own profile and we switch between guitar and base. We play together along with the band and if you miss a note or cord you can hear it. We have purchased many additional songs from Steam DLC. There are skill games and lessons on techniques to help you learn how to play. We bought it around Christmas and I bought another copy for my computer a few weeks ago because it was so much fun. It is a real challenge. Starts you off easy and automatically increases notes and cords as you get better. If you stumble too much it cuts back to get you going smoothly. New songs are added to Steam each week that can be purchased and downloaded for $2.99 each or in sets for a slight discount. During the holiday special a lot of the songs were 1/2 price. Since this is a fairly new software the familiar song list is not as large as RockBand or Guitar Hero but they are coming. Remember that you are playing real instruments and building rhythm and skills not just pushing buttons. Each song has its own distortion and amp mix that is simulated so your guitar or base sounds like the actual song. It is not an easy road though. You must hit the note. make the bends and stay on beat, you are actually playing the song and it takes practice. Once you get started hours will go by and you will want to get back to the challenge as soon as you get home.

Cons: Sometimes it will freeze up or not recognize when you check your tuning but not a big deal or very often. I want more songs, not just hits or new bands.

Other Thoughts: My son would look at my guitars but never tried to play until we got RockSmith. He has only been playing about a month and a half and is already much better than me. We went the other day and bought him a Les Paul for his birthday, he likes playing so much. I was listening to him play a Santana song and could not believe how well he could play and how close he was to the real song. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player this is an excellent innovation. (I refuse to call it a game but what do you call something that teaches you and you have fun doing it?) Buy it and join the band! You will have a great time.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fun, easy to use, and getting me back into playing guitar.

Cons: A bit pricey in my opinion..

Other Thoughts: I'm a beginner guitar player. I've had an acoustic in the past, got bored, and quit. I got an electric guitar a while back and got a little bit more into playing, and figured I'd by rocksmith to check it out. As a result, I've learned a few new techniques, gotten a bit faster in my fingering, and in general had a good time playing. I can sit and play for hours and stay entertained. I'm not sure however if this "game" if you can call it that, will translate into better skill when detached from my computer. Time will tell I guess.

Regardless of whether or not my Rocksmith accomplishments will translate into real life guitar skills, I'd highly recommend this game, as its a fun way to get engaged with a guitar.

5 out of 5 eggsFun

Pros: Lots of fun.
Works great with the Stratocaster and an Acoustic with built-in pickup. Uses real instruments.

Cons: Cable is long but i would like a few extra feet in length. i'll try a USB extender cable so it might reach the couch.

Other Thoughts: Installs and works perfectly on XP-sp3.
Using on a HTPC ( 3ghz Core2duo 4gig-mem, 550ti video )with a 6-foot projector image and high end sound system. Can go as loud as my guitar amp.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's great!

Pros: Great game / teaching aid. Looking forward to playing this for years to come. The game is very deep with technique challenges, minigames, great song list. Extensive DLC song selection available as well.

Cons: Not a replacement for a real instructor.

Other Thoughts: I've seen reviews on other sites complaining of the fact that Steam is required to play this game. I have no problem with this personally b/c I've made many purchase in the past without issues.
