Return to the popular Star Wars universe with Lucas Arts Star Wars: Empire at War for the PC, the first real-time strategy game set in the popular world of Yoda, Luke, and the Force. Gamers control one of two factions in the great struggle for galactic dominance. Set a few years before Star Wars: A New Hope, the game explores the creation of the Rebel Alliance and the Empire's struggle to keep its iron grip on the universe. Players choose to play as one of the two factions. Like all real-time strategy games, they must collect resources, build bases, recruit units, and research new technology. All of the great Star Wars units are here, including X-wings, land speeders, AT-ATs, and even the huge Star Destroyer ships. The game takes place on a number of different worlds, including classic Star Wars locations like Tatooine, Yavin 4, and Dagobah.

In addition to the locations and the units, players will also be familiar with some of the hero units that appear, including Obi-Wan Kenobi and the terrifying Darth Vader. These units are very powerful and can help players turn the tide in key battles. Likewise, each side has its own special units and abilities. Players controlling the Empire, for example, will eventually find themselves in control of the powerful Death Star. Gamers who love real-time strategy games and Star Wars will find that Empire at War is a great combination of the two. The missions, units, and storyline are all classic Star Wars.

4 out of 5 eggsOK

Pros: like the different heroes, and their abilities. diverse space ships. makes a good storyline

Cons: basic gameplay is dull. it needs something else to it. the third faction (pirates) needs to be somewhat, stronger.

Other Thoughts: the expansion is a good addition to this game, throughs everything into a loop.

3 out of 5 eggsOk, but wanted more

Pros: decent graphics, Star Wars galor, faithful to vehicles, sounds, characters from the movies/books/comics. Galactic conquest supports multiplayer

Cons: Lack-luster ground and space combat, not much strategy involved. I expected much more from the space battles. Galactic conquest campaigns are much too complicated and AI is annoying.

Other Thoughts: This game could have been much better, the ideas are there they just haven't been fully realized in the game-play. The space battles are exactly like "Star Trek Armada" linear RTS, I would have prefered something more like homeworld, all the 3D shots you see are from "cinematic mode" which is not actual game-play just a camera trick. The ground combat is similar to RTS games of 3-5 years ago, very lack-luster and tedious. Hate to say it but I benched this one after a week or so even being a fan of Star Wars. I found Galactic Battleground much more fun.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat game, dont listen to other reviewers...

Pros: Starwars, lots of things to do highly replayable, up-commming expansions, fun mods, addictible with mods, best starwars RTS for sure.

Cons: graphics are okay if turned to maximum, could be a little better but not that much more, difficult to change pop cap, it isnt ballenced intil you patch it up.

Other Thoughts: great game for xx now you cant go wrong.

3 out of 5 eggswanted something more

Pros: Great space combat. I have played both sides and loved the space battles.

Cons: I was hoping for a game that was based on the Lore, and this is. However I was a little disappointed to have the Deathstar be the end of the game... either wiping you out or ending the game when it is destroyed. I wish I could play with out it. In addition the ground combat leaves a lot to be desired. It has sparse units and each one counters the other to a degree that the ground game plays like "paper rock scissors."

Other Thoughts: I ended up indefinitely loaning it out to a friend. The game was fun a few times through on campaign mode quicky lost appeal because of the ground combat lacking and the deathstar either wiping you out or ending the game if destroyed.

4 out of 5 eggsImperial Domination!

Pros: It's a Star Wars game; you can be the Empire; it rocks. Kinda a remake of Rebellion, but different enough (and far more advanced). Gameplay is smoothe. Difficulty of AI nice and diverse.

Cons: HAD to mod in higher unit caps. Larger ship selection would be nice (I suppose the expansion will help).

Other Thoughts: I want the expansion NOW!

2 out of 5 eggsNot even close

Pros: Star Wars!!! I love SW movies and games even though most of them aren't really good. This is set in the Star Wars universe and....umm....thats all there is to say thats good.

Cons: Whats goin on with Lucas-arts?!?!?! This game is truly awful. The graphics are stale and not good especially when compared to other RTS's like DOW or Rome:Total War...Even compared to Generals which came out in 2002(i think) it's pretty bad. The units are stiff and there simply aren't a lot of them. The space battles are....fresh since this is one of the very few games that tries to copy Homeworld. There aren't enough units and only the Empire and Rebels to command.

Other Thoughts: Not enough bang for your buck...stay away. If you want a good RTS, go for Dawn of War or Homeworld for a great space RTS.

5 out of 5 eggsSuper great game

Pros: The graphics are great and the game is really fun and addictive. Get a good graphics card, i have a geforce 6600 and it is not really powerful enough to see all the goodies.

Cons: Needs powerful graphics card - but most new games do:)

4 out of 5 eggsVery good game

Pros: The game is fun to play, espicially the Empire. Graphics are good, strategy is well done and balance is fairly decent. The best part of playing is watching Vader and AT-ATs decimate the replublic land forces.

Cons: There are few choices in space forces and very little customization. I like games with a good selection of unit types and/or customization so you can try different strategies. You can't play Luke on the ground, which makes no sense since you can play Vader. The republic land heros are rather weak strategically (although Han does have some good lines).

Other Thoughts: It is a good game and it is fun to play, espicially if you're a Star Wars fan. I think they tried to keep it a bit too-simple. A few more options for space and better republic heros could have made this one of the best all-time RTS games, instead its just good.

Pros: If you like Star Wars and you like RTS this game is for you. it has fenomenal graphis for an RTS and the space battles look awesome in cinematic mode especially when you boost up the res on your computer.

Cons: I have a cruddy computer.

Other Thoughts: i was able to run this with absolutely no lag on a computer as cruddy as mine which makes me HAPPY.
