1 out of 5 eggsHeadache after headache...

Pros: NONE!

Cons: Installation itself was a hassle. When I finally got it installed I couldn't play it because a box popped up that said I was running emulation software - um NO!

2 patches later I came a little closer to playing but still no because I could not get my Logitech controller to work at all with this game. (It works flawlessly with EVERY other game I own!)

Finally started a race & the car would not move at all, even using keyboard & mouse.

Other Thoughts: Codemasters (Codemasters, how laughable...) doesn't care they already have your non refundable money...

Every other game I own - FarCry2, Crysis, Tiger Woods 08, FIFA 08, MotoGP 08, PURE, F.E.A.R. series etc. not even a hiccup of problem. Save your money this game is a horrendous failure.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat game, recommended despite the problems

Pros: Great racing game, the best I have ever played! The Career mode is very well laid out allowing you to race in several different classes and it gradually brings you up to speed. The difficulty levels are very well implemented. Graphics are very nice and there are plenty of tracks/courses for you to race.

Cons: The game interface is difficult to navigate through. This can make doing things like adjusting you car setup cumbersome. While this is a con, it should not stop you from buying the game. The main problem with this game is that I (and many other people) have to disconnect from the internet before playing the game, otherwise it will lock your system up. From what I have read, this is because there is some adware program that tries to run when you start up DiRT. This is a terrible flaw that should definately be addressed by the developers.

Other Thoughts: Some aspects of getting this game up and running can be quite frustrating but once you get your problems sorted out, you will forget all about that because the actual racing really is THAT GOOD!! If you were to ask me if you should buy it, I would say yes, absolutely. I give 3 stars because of the bugs.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Great Looking Graphics
Awesome Physics with everything set on high.
Weather effects, wind, shadows, damage, things flying through the air... all cool. The game is a lot of fun to play. I really get wrapped up in the races. Sound is awesome in surround mode. Cars really come to life. Vroom... Vroom...

Cons: Adjusting the cars' attributes is a little tedious. There is a way to save setups, but you have to go in and load them every time you start a new race. Long load times, but that seems to be a fact of life with games these days. Can get a bit processor and memory heavy when racing the SUVs and the Dune Buggies... Only a con if your system can't hang.

Other Thoughts: If you are reading these reviews to decide if you want to try it, it is worth buying... I think it's great. Most of the negative reviews I have read can be attributed to 3 things:
1. Lack of hardware. Codemasters writes their games for the most advanced technology available at the time. If you don't have a newish graphics card, a couple Gigs of RAM, and a decent processor, this game will not run well.
2. Lack of skill. Reviewers who say the cars are too hard to drive because they slide off the road need to stick with their first person shooters. It is not easy, but that's what makes it fun.
3. Lack of knowledge. Reviewers who say the cars look like a hovercraft are running the game in minimum graphics mode... Of course it looks lame in that mode. Crank up the effects. Put everything on the highest settings and you will be impressed. Again, they may be running it on that mode due to reason #1.

2 out of 5 eggsCould have been....

Pros: Graphics look nice. Thats where the Pros. stop.

Cons: Horrible controls. This could have been a good game. But seem's like Codemaster's can't get it right yet.

Other Thoughts: Save your money.

2 out of 5 eggscould have been a good game

Pros: The graphics of the game are awesome. Highly detailed. Car damage is incredile.

Cons: The game play is extremely bad. It is very hard to control the car and stay on the road, not because they did a good job in making slides realistic, it is because the cars as if just hovercraft on the road. You press reverse, the card starts going reverse immediately, no wait for "realistic" gear change, acceleration, deceleration. I have always, almost only, played car racing games all my life, starting with games on AMIGA 500. So, I really can say this game probably has the worst playability I've seen in my life.

Other Thoughts: It is a shame that they made the gameplay and drivabilty of the cars extremely unrealistic and bad. The graphics of the game really had a lot of potential.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat but not great.

Pros: - Graphics
Stunning at some points, cranked up with a simply 9600GSO on a 22" Acer monitor
-Footprint
Not at all a big game by todays standards, unless you are the poor sap with a 160GB HDD then this game will not take up much space.
-Models
Model wise i find this is where it accelerates itself to a great game for the money. Everything is down to the last detail on the car to being able to see where a tree scratched the paint. Stunning.

Cons: -Controls
Without a wheel or a controller is seems very hard to even get slightly immersed in it's high bath of potential.
-Optimization
One proble with every game these days is that they favor one card, or neither. 9600GSO or a 4670 is ideal for this game but both are unoptimized and it seems like they just wanted to get the game out to make as much money off of the racing hype at the time.

Other Thoughts: Overall enjoyable, really great game and a must buy if you have a XBox 360 controller or a Racing wheel. Rather awkward with a PS2 style gamepad.

If you want a quick game to maybe test your systems graphics out or just to have a bit of rally fun then pick up DiRT.

2 out of 5 eggsOK at the right price...

Pros: Nice graphics, and the replay mode is fun to watch. Good variety of vehicles, tracks, and terrain. Fun for those who like console-style gaming, but the lack of mouse support is annoying. I played this using an XBOX 360 controller, and the configuration options are noticeably limited.

Cons: The vehicle dynamics physics engine is horrible, particularly the braking. Even if you're 100 feet from taking a header into a guardrail at 80 mph, don't worry. Just stomp the brakes and turn, and your car will come to an instant skid-free stop and turn on a dime. There is absolutely no car feel like the SimBin games have, and all of the vehicles in DIRT seem to have the same handling characteristics.

I have built my own steering wheel and pedals for racing sims, but I haven't bothered trying it with this game due to the sloppy arcade-like handling.

Despite the poor gameplay, this game will test the limits of your hardware. I'm running an E8500 chip at 3.6 GHz with a pair of 8800GTS 512 cards in SLi, and with the settings on high, this game will overheat the graphics cards and cause occassional lockups.

Other Thoughts: I picked this up locally for 8 bucks, and for the money it's fun for a change of pace, but I don't forsee myself dedicating much time to it.

Next time I get an itch for rally-style racing, I'll pick up a copy of Richard Burns Rally.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Beautiful graphics, good pacenotes, realistic appearances and real car models.

Cons: NOT realistic physics. If you have any clue about real-world physics, or play a lot of Richard Burns Rally (super realistic driving simulation, not anywhere near as pretty as this game though...) you will quickly realize how absurd the cars handle and react in this game. I hate to say it, but I see a lot of people calling the physics in this game 'realistic'. It's just not so.

Other Thoughts: Do yourself a favor IF you crave realism in a rally game and find a copy of Richard Burns Rally. I spent the same amount of money on RBR as this game is here. Long live Richard Burns, R.I.P.

5 out of 5 eggsJust got it in today

Pros: very good game already even though i'm in the first few races...gettin online was easy! great looking btw! an ati 2600xt or nvidia 8600gt should run this great! i have a 3870 an on ultra at 4xaa the frames never dropped below 50! i was very impressed!!! just an overall pleasing game!

Cons: needs more people online...don't be fooled though...they are online!

Other Thoughts: i guess if you have the money for the newer codemasters game "Grid" i would go ahead an say get that over this..but if you're like me an didn't have enough money at the time this should tide you over..it's just as good but it IS a different race type..grid is on road an this is off road...both offer equally great experiences but i prefer the road an grids cars!
