Order of War (Free D-Day: Codename Overlord DVD Included)
ESRB Rating
T - Teen

In the summer of 1944, the Second World War entered its end-game when the Allies launched two major operations that would drive back German forces on both the Western and Eastern Fronts at once. Their names were Overlord and Bagration. Overlord famously commenced with the D-Day landings in Normandy and ended in the Liberation of Paris, while Bagration - a far less well-known but far larger Russian operation - crushed the invading German forces in the east, leading to their complete withdrawal from Soviet territory. Had either operation been unsuccessful, history could have been very different. In the ultimate test of military strategy, Order of War will challenge you not only to lead America's finest to victory in the west, but also place you in command of the German forces charged with repelling the Red Army's seemingly unstoppable offensive in the east. Even the keenest military minds will find that it's one thing to make history, but quite another to change it.

4 out of 5 eggsSteamed up

Pros: I like the game. I play it like a strategy game.

Cons: STEAM SUCKS! Why did I pay full price for a game when steam loses track of games 'installed' on the PC? Then it offers to down load the game over the next 45 hours?

Other Thoughts: I have been gaming since the IBM 286 and I have no desire to learn the ins and outs of F'in steam! Just load the game and get out of my face.. I mean my screen!

2 out of 5 eggsSteam

Pros: Amazing graphics for the price ($15 if you search) - with the camera fully out or fully zoomed
The Cinema Camera is pretty cool, showing a "movie-style" zoom of the action - with great graphics. You can reproduce this yourself by zooming way in and moving the camera around.
Overall good realism (tanks have machine guns and cannon, artillery and troops can call in half-tracks for movement, etc.)
Unit control during pause
Camera controls are great (360 degree turn, incremental zoom from top-down to horizontal)

Cons: The overall feel is extremely slow - you control a very large area with relatively few troops...who all happen to be slow anyway. The infantry make it worse by going prone when fired upon, with no option to GET UP AND RUN to the nearest building or trench...or just plain CHARGE the enemy.
Adding to this, there is no slow/normal/fast option, just pause and go.

But the worst problem is Steam. There is no way to download this game without it being connected to the Steam application. The main reason I got this game was to play LAN with my brother. I can download it on one computer, then log on to my Steam account and download it onto the second, but Steam won't let me use LAN without being logged in on both computers. How juvenile. Over the internet lobbies I can see, but requiring login for LAN?!? Seriously!?!

Another game-maker - Ubisoft - is suppose to be the worst on "pirate prevention", even they will let me use LAN with one copy (HAWX)

Other Thoughts: If the fighting was faster-paced, three eggs.
And if the troops were more controllable, maybe four.

Add those together with a can of Steam-Be-Gone! and this would have been a five-egg game.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Too Impressed

Pros: Challenging strategy

Cons: No blood, no gore, overly simplistic. It would be nice if you could earn medals and eperience for individual units as you could in the first close combat, which I personally think is still the best WWII game ever produced.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome but buggy

Pros: - Easy to pick up
- Challenging to master
- Choice between American or German campaign with 9 involved missions each. Lots of good game play time.
- Great graphics and sound
- More tactical fighting than most games and you aren't bogged down with micromanagement of resources.
- The real strategy is effectively using the resources given to beat the mission. The Hill of Sorrow mission will challenge even the accomplished RTS vet.
- Skirmish mode is fun if you only have 15-20 min to waste or you want to hone your skills for the campaigns.

Cons: - memory leak issue causes "Not Enough Memory" error. There's a patch but it's still an issue. I didn't become a problem until midway through the campaign. I suggest you save often until they fix this.
- If they fix it, this game is clearly 5 eggs!
- SAVE often until they fix the memory leak. Can't stress that enough or you get 30 min into a mission and freeze up.

Other Thoughts: I'm using a high mid-range system (Phenom X4 9650, HD4770 in crossfire, 6GB RAM) and it runs fine with all video settings maxed out. The cinematic mode is nice but, I don't find myself going to that very often. The fighting map has pretty nice graphics too. I love the music. They did a good job at matching the music to the war scenes.

5 out of 5 eggsWaiting for orders, Sir

Pros: - I'm fairly new to gaming; last stuff I tried was Close Combat back in the late 90s. I read that strategy games help keep your mind sharp so I thought I would give it a go. OOW did not disappoint.
- Beautiful graphics and sound track.
- Fairly quick to get the hang of troop deployment and manage resources from a macro scale.
- Love skirmish mode. Makes for a quick (15-30min) battle. Be prepared to get your backside kicked though until you get the hang of tactical fighting. It will help to get good here before moving to campaign.
- Video of the battle scene you create is awesome.

Cons: - a little more help with tactical fighting would help. You can't sit and defend or you're doomed.

Other Thoughts: I tried a couple other RTS games and got frustrated before finding this one. This is a fun game and is helping me build RTS tactics I'm sure for other games.

5 out of 5 eggsJust finished the game

Pros: Cool graphics, awesome soundtracks, cool cut scenes, camera feature, looking reastical

Cons: Missions could be a little more diverse

Other Thoughts: Just finished the game so I would love to share with you my views on “Order of War” title and outline its strengths and weaknesses. First off I should I say that I never considered myself an RTS fan (shooters is my passion actually). RSTs always seemed quite boring for me, not that dynamic as I wanted. That’s probably why I was advised to try namely this game. And yes, the absence of head racking micromanagement, production and recharging was what I greatly appreciated in this game. What I like about any game is dynamism and OOW is all about it. It doesn’t mean of course that you don’t have to think while completing the missions, but you can focus completely on annihilating your enemy as all management stuff was already done by developers. That is why “Order of War” is really warlike, all about vanquishing the enemy. The number of forces you command is limited to several units, so there’s no need to babysit each your soldier or tank. All this gives me the reason to say that generall

5 out of 5 eggsA definite "must-have" for strategy fans

Pros: Stunning graphics, fast-paced gameplay, funny cinamatic camera mode and challenging multiplayer.

Cons: A bit laggy on my machine (not high-end)

Other Thoughts: Bought Order of War about a week ago and spent something like 25-30 hours playing it. Being a fan of WWII RTS games for years (CoH, WiC, MoW) I got interested by the opportunity to play WiC-like battles but on larger scale and with nicer graphics – and actually haven’t been disappointed yet. OoW plays like a decent and well-balanced strategy game with cool visuals and quick-paced gameplay. There is no resource-gathering and base-building. You are focused on issuing orders, maneuvering on the battlefield and supplying yr army. It’s no way clickfest – I use active pause to stop the action when playing skirmishes (wish I had this option in MP?). In some scenarios you start with a small group of troops having something like 2-3 squads of infantry and several tank detachments at command and then gradually build up a bigger army controlling hundreds of units on the battlefield. Some missions (like Will to Win (playing for Wermacht)) are extremely massive, I spent about 3 hours trying to figh

5 out of 5 eggsOreder of War rocks!

Pros: Order of War ( is an excellent entry into the World War II real-time strategy genre. Although this type of game isn't new, Order of War provides new ideas and a fresh perspective on the typical (and not-so-typical) battles of the Second World War.

For one thing, you can command hundreds of men and vehicles in even a relatively small engagement. Some of the larger battles are so immense that it's hard to keep your units on the screen! You can also zoom in close to hear the sounds of battle and the shouts of the men. The cinematic camera option is also a very cool feature for those times when you've given orders to your units and just want to sit back and watch the battle unfold like a Hollywood blockbuster.

Cons: Sure, some of the battles, like D-Day, have been done many times before, but what would a World War II game be without those famous conflicts? Not to mention some lesser-known battles, like the invasion of southern France, or the crossing of the Siegfried Line. Every battle has been meticulously researched and accurately modeled. Even the famous church in the center of St. Mere Eglise is there, along with detailed bunkers on Omaha Beach, and the amazing Leopold railway gun with its monstrous shells.

Other Thoughts: The combination of infantry, tanks, artillery, and air power provides a variety of tools and tactics that can be used to overcome the opposition. Moving units in company formation (the only way real regimental and brigade commanders can move their troops - by ordering battalion and company commanders around!) makes it easy to manage the large number of soldiers and vehicles on the battlefield. Although the game is deceptively easy to play, it is hard to master, as the AI is quite intelligent at higher levels, terrain becomes crucial to success, and the tactical ebb and flow of battles increases substantially. If anything, multiplayer gaming highlights just how simple the interface is, but how complex the game's strategems can be.

Overall, I'd recommend this game highly to both beginning gamers interested in a World War II RTS that is easy to learn and to grognards steeped in the history of the period and looking to whet their appetite with something simpler but still challenging.
