1 out of 5 eggsAbsolute Junk

Pros: Functional within limites

Cons: Outrageously bad software and a company that's even worse.

Other Thoughts: I've suffered through Nuance's blundering for far too long.

Activation issues noted by others are simply unacceptable. A notebook computer with an external drive runs through the number of changes Nuance considers 'acceptable' within months. They have NEVER addressed the problem of their dialog window popping under (rather than in front of) the application window. They have ignored the fact that their tool cannot print from mainstream applications like Visio, even when provided with both the source files and samples of output. They do everything they can to put off solving a problem until you are out of free support and must pay for each message to them.

Bottom line - BUY SOMETHING ELSE. If your needs are straightforward, get CutePDF. If you need sophistication, bite the bullet and buy from Adobe.

DON'T support a company that produces junk like this, and then won't support it professionally. I say this with more than 30 years in IT

3 out of 5 eggsNot for prints

Pros: Have some nice features like combining several PDF's into one, convertion to office files, etc. Decent for marking up or making notes on documents.

Cons: Not great for marking up engineering drawings/prints. Call outs are always in a box, so if you want a note in a circle (like a componant numbers) you have to make a circle and then make a text box over it and then an arrow. Add on top of this that you can't do "send to front/back" type of layering so it can be tedious. This is for simple edits only, which is sad because it's the lack of simple features that is holding it back.

Other Thoughts: Considering before I was using MS Paint and a screen shot of the documents, this is a small step up. It's not Acrobat but I suppose it gets the job done.

1 out of 5 eggsugly interface and activation doesn't stick

Pros: None - terrible PDF software

Cons: Interface and menu bar looks like something from Windows 95. Activation is terrible and doesn't stick. Software creates different computer registration codes based on hardware and code changes even when hardware doesn't. While I was attempting to use NUANCE PDF it would have to be activated several times a day - sometimes it would stay activated for a couple of days - but then it would prompt me to activate and register again to continue using. I spent many hours and several phone calls to support and they couldn't get the registration fixed. I've never had such major issues in my 20 years of computer use. After a couple of weeks, Support gave me a ticket # and said they would research the issue further and contact me. Two days later I got an email saying they had closed the ticket and if I needed more help to call them back and start new. I uninstalled, threw the CD away, installed NITRO PDF - fantastic software.

Other Thoughts: Will never buy another product from NUANCE as long as they use registration based on my computer hardware and software will not stay activated.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Able to convert PDF files to Word pretty accurately - saves a lot of time in rekeying. One unexpected bonus was that this product unlike Adobe Acrobat X remembers where you stored the last PDF. So if you are downloading multiple PDFs from the same site, this is a huge timesaver as Adobe would always save the file in a temp directory and you would have to re-save it to the destination folder.

Activation was a bit cumbersome and not quite straightforward, but not a problem.

Cons: 1) This product created huge temp files for a bit (16 GB total), but that problem seems to have gone away. If this does recur, it would be a problem.

Other Thoughts: When you register with tech support, be sure to use your real email address. Some moron at Nuance decided that you could not get tech support if you are using an alternate email address because your reply to any tech support request has to come from the registered email address. I guess the concept of email aliases has not quite made it to Nuance.

An alternative is to use the Nuance web site for all tech support communications, but that is cumbersome. You would think that when they get a response back with the right case number and additional details, it is related to that case, but if the email address is not right - reject!

This does not add any real security as email address spoofing is easy to do - just look at all the spam.

5 out of 5 eggsDependable PDF Converter

Pros: 1. Save web pages, Word, Excel pages to pdf.
2. Combine separate pdf pages into document.
3. Include weblinks in pdf pages produced.
4. Produce new pdf pages.

Cons: None that I have run into. You do have to be careful to take the product off an old machine before putting it on a new machine...Nuance does keep track.

Other Thoughts: I have been happy enough with this product to purchase 1 copy each of versions 5 and 6 and 2 copies of 7.

I would not spend the list price on this, but at $30-$45 it is a reasonable value.

5 out of 5 eggsActivation works perfectly for me...

Pros: Super simple compared to Adobe
A few more features than Adobe
A heck of a lot cheaper than Adobe

Cons: Can be a bit buggy at times, but not too bad.

Other Thoughts: I don't get the activation gripes. I've installed this software on 100's of machines at various businesses, and never once had a problem with activation. Work each and every time and never needs to be fixed.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't bother

Pros: When it does work it does the job well

Cons: The absolute worst activation process. I have successfully activated this product at least 6 times, each time was after having to call Nuance support to get my activations increased. I believe I actually spend more time getting this product reactivated then I do using it to convert PDFs. I will never buy another product from Nuance because of this royal PITA.

3 out of 5 eggsactivation & it's problems, bites!

Pros: 1. cheaper than adobe

Cons: 1. windows startup activation issues bite!
So irritating that it makes you long for the days of the old
2. if your hard drive develops a problem and needs to have windows "repair" run on it, it will hammer the boot up nuance activation process.
3. Then the software will hog up resources and process priority so much that it made my pc unusable.
Ultimately I installed a new hard drive, did a new install of windows, and was back online.
4. Nuance doesn't seem to care how much they inconvenience their end users.

Other Thoughts: 1. Due to activation issues, I sought out a different PDF creation solution.
2. NITRO PDF has been on sale here at newegg for $19.99 on several occasions.
I had all but one of my computers switched over to NITRO.
The last pc I will use Corel PDF Fusion, as I just bought it a week or so ago here at newegg, when it was on sale for like $35.00
3. if I were required to use this software, I'd demand a hardware dongle for license validation. Their software attempt to activate just sux.

1 out of 5 eggsGood product, activation sucks!

Pros: Cheaper than Adobe, does a good job converting, printing and with forms.

Cons: Nuance's activation system is the worst I have seen. Simply using USB drives, updating your BIOS, replacing a hard drive or updating your OS will cause you to have to re-activate. If you don't uninstall the software first, you will eventually be locked out of the software. With Nuance's support hours, you can easily be stuck with unusable software when you need it the most. Stay away from all Nuance products until this is changed.
