5 out of 5 eggspainless cloning

Pros: I used this to migrate my Toshiba's hard drive to a Seagate Momentus XT via cloning. It worked great. I installed the software on the old drive. attached the new drive with USB adapter and kicked it off. I did not want to spend days reinstalling years worth of software, etc.

Cons: it is not on sale every day.

1 out of 5 eggsStick with the free versions

Pros: None - after reinstalling or repairing this program 4 times

Cons: Inconsistent performance from this software.

Other Thoughts: I have used the Seagate and WD versions for years without ever having a problem. I thought I would get the pay version to benefit from the extra features. Not so, this version either gets corrupted or ?? and wont always start, especially if you are dealing with a troublesome hard drive. You'll either have to reinstall it or repair it. No thanks!

1 out of 5 eggsUpgrade to True Image 2012

Pros: Past 10 years has been a solid reliable product using the increment image backup feature. As a software consultant for 35 years this product is a must.

Cons: However, migrating from Home edition 2009 to 2012 was a disaster. Runing Win xp sp3 and installing 2012 caused a blue screen several times. Had to recover with my 2009 version. Will not continue to use this product because of it's unreliablity.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for image creation

Pros: Great for making full hard drive images. Got it at a great price. Better than the previous version when restoring to a different size hard drive.

Cons: Installing the software on your PC causes high CPU and memory usage which slows down the PC, even when idle. The files and folders you select to backup whether you choose incremental or differential are all compressed onto whatever media you choose to back it up to – external USB HD or a NAS drive. This can present a problem should you have a HD failure and want to restore a folder. For example – Music folder – lets say your fist backup had 100 songs on it and on a weekly basis you add 2 songs to that folder. You setup True image to backup weekly so the 2nd B/U will have the 2 additional songs now multiply that by let’s say 52 weeks. On a NAS drive, you will have 52 backups each containing 2 songs a week imagine restoring your music folder to the condition before the HD failure.

Other Thoughts: I have been using True Image since 2009 but only to create a restore image of the hard drive should I have a HD failure. My WD NAS drive comes with backup software that copies the entire folder as it is and as the files are backed up they are added to the same folder and are not compressed. This may take up more room, but can be easily retrieved on another device without installing this app should one of those files be needed to complete an install. Additionally, you can restore an entire folder and not worry about restoring 51 other backups

5 out of 5 eggsAcronis Rocks

Pros: Easy to set up, provides a solid backup, you choose whether to back up everything or selected drives/items.

Cons: None that I can think of. Read several in other reviews but I've experienced none.

Other Thoughts: This is my third version of this software. I keep coming back because I am satisfied.

2 out of 5 eggsShould be freeware

Pros: It is backup software.

Cons: There is better freeware out there and it doesn't necessarily save to a proprietary format. I lost a 2 TB drive recently and Acronis failed to recover its own backup. (I got most of it back through online backup through Trend Micro, but some recent folder restructuring erased content online.) I have found Win7 backup to be more flexible. Some features can work over a network and others can't. Despite my settings, it consistently would not get rid of previous full / incremental backup until it filled my backup drive and gave warnings. I was unable to get rid of the older full / incremental backups without deleting everything. Then I had no backup.

Other Thoughts: Try a 30 day trial of this before committing. It seems to be complicated enough to turn off non pc enthusiasts, but limited enough to annoy the enthusiasts. It surprises me that this product is still around.
I've heard that many versions ago it was the go to software for backups (v5?), and it has gone downhill with each new release.

5 out of 5 eggsOLDER VERSION, 2013 is out...

Pros: Works great, has lots of extra features.

Cons: There is a newer version out as of beginning of Sept 2012,
and I got 2012 "just before" the new one was released.

Other Thoughts: The version on the CD was behind by about 5 "builds" and a
newer revision/build needed to be downloaded anyway from
the "Acronis Account" Update site after registering.
At least I got a free case with a printed cover....

1 out of 5 eggsAcronis Not Customer Friendly

Pros: Works Well

Cons: I purchase Acronis True Image 2011 last year. I installed the Windows 8 preview. True Image will not work with Windows 8.
Actually I have a lot of software on my computer and this was the only software that Windows 8 rejected. I had to uninstall. I have copy of Windows 7 on my computer also. Tried to reinstall into Windows 7 but halway thru it rejected. I tried number alternates and still it rejected half way thru install. I went on the Acronis website and tried to contact customer support. It automatically rejected the request and said "Acronis True Image 2011 is no longer supported. What! Only a year after it is put on the market! Well, I have had problems with Acronis before. They just want to keep you purchasing upgrades. Same with their other software. Good software but no more for me. There are too many other very good backup software out there. Goodbye Acronis.

Other Thoughts: Using their software is more hassle than I need to put up with!
