Empire: Total War Collectors Edition
ESRB Rating
T - Teen

Command the seas, control the land, forge a new nation, and conquer the globe. Empire: Total War takes the Total War franchise to the eighteenth century Age of Enlightenment -- a time of political upheaval, military advancements, and radical thought, captured in stunning detail in Empire: Total War.

Empire: Total War introduces a host of revolutionary new features, including true 3D naval combat. For the first time in the Total War series, you will be able to intuitively command single ships or vast fleets upon seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat. After pummeling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board, taking control of your men as they fight hand-to-hand on the decks of these wooden behemoths.

In addition, Empire: Total War will see further enhancements to the Total War series' signature 3D battles and turn-based campaign map. Real-time battles will pose new challenges with the addition of cannon and musket, challenging players to master new formations and tactics as a result of the increasing role of gunpowder within warfare. And the Campaign Map -- for many, the heart of Total War -- introduces a variety of new and upgraded elements, including new systems for Trade, Diplomacy and Espionage with agents; a refined and streamlined UI; improved Advisors; and a vastly extended scope, taking in the riches of India, the turbulence of Europe and, for the first time, the untapped potential of the United States of America.

Take command on the high seas. New real-time 3D naval warfare takes Total War's unparalleled battle action to the high seas, with players commanding single ships or vast fleets.

Become a founding father. Control the fate of the United States of America, from its revolution against the British to overcoming the challenges of a young independent nation.

5 out of 5 eggsStunning, Capable, Worth the Nickel!

Pros: 1)Stunningly beautiful, this game far surpasses previous releases in the series in every facet of eye candy.
2)When paused, the battle scenes look like the panoramic art in your parent's American Heritage or other historical artist's renderings!
3)Sound is as elsewhere reviewed, equally stunning.
4)Scope of the game is so great yet detail is so high, even veterans will be amazed.
5)Naval battles and strategy add a 4th dimension, and are economically driven.
6)Good selection of playable factions. For the first time US playable in really good campaign-level Episodes 3 and 4.
7)Technology is its own theatre of action, thought matters!
8)If one is a "do-er" and not interested in the less action oriented campaign areas, these can be automated to reduce non-battle times, or avoided altogether -go straight to war in the battles section
10)Gunpowder era requires a whole new set of tactics, all must go back to school
11)Huge playerbase for MultiP built up over the years by the series.

Cons: 1)Truly antiquated and limited systems cannot play this game.
2)Some "on the bubble" (near to minimum specs) will find it too laggy.
3)Some systems (including apparently some reviewers) will require updating their drivers, examining their game cache to verify complete and non-corrupt installs and updates- AND verify there are no software conflicts or infections in their system! LOL!
4)Very advanced and capable engine and coding means some may require some tweaking of your sound and or graphic settings if you have tinkered with them in the past. Loads of help in the forums if you need help or don't know what you're doing!
5)Not much of a con, but some areas of the game are receiving automated updates (two so far) as no battle plan survives the first bullet fired! The fact this is clearly the flagship of the series means there is full supoprt from the very capable, experienced, and well funded CA studios in England, backed by owner Sega.
6)Oh yeah, Steam DOES 5uck.

Other Thoughts: If you are a FPS guy, this is NOT that sort of game. It DOES have stirring sounds, and graphics, and the environment will make you pause or slow mo to just watch panoramic charges, stunning scenes of drifting smoke flying cannonball and musket-shots, or watch the absorbing environment in a replay (lol! You'll usually be waaay too busy during the battle even if you are in fortifications). This is a challenging game on higher settings of difficulty, and the AI is better than in past releases, though still dealing with things too complex for current levels of AI programming to always grasp.
The fact that we, and many others are playing this game on ultra w/ considerably less-capable systems than many of those few having trouble is a fairly clear indication of issues dealing with corrupted, incomplete files, driver updates, underpowered PSU (watts or 12+v) or software settings/conflicts/infections.
Our Sys: AMD x2 3.2ghz, 4gCorsair 6400ddr2 @800, BFG 8800gts OCExtreme Ed, Vista64bit.
