1 out of 5 eggsWin7 + Roxio = Fail

Pros: Arrived on time.

Cons: The app doesn't start.

So far, I've installed this on two different Win7 x64 machines, and have had absolutely no success capturing any video. In both cases, everything appears to install properly and the USB device is recognized, but the app fails to start. All I get is a non-responsive splash screen and a process that cannot be killed by Windows Task Manager. I've tried running in various compatibility modes, running as admin, using the drivers that ship with the device, using updated drivers recommended by Windows Update, "repairing" the installation with the install disc, performing a complete uninstall and reinstall... Nothing allows me to get past the splash screen.

I've created a support request with Roxio / Corel, but have yet to get any response from them. So, I'd stay as far away from this product as possible until a fix is available.

Other Thoughts: I'm still hoping that I can get the capture working with another application, as the driver seemed to install properly and the USB device is recognized. So far, I've only tried Windows Movie Maker, but no luck there. I'll update this post if I make any headway.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor output file quality

Pros: Does what it says it will do. My disc included Sound Editor and Express Labeler (OOOooo! WOW! No, really, that was sarcasm...)

Cons: Does what it says it will do very poorly. When played back after capture, the picture quality is badly pixelated . I have played around with several settings and I have yet to find one that will correct this problem. If there is a way I have yet to find it due to the HORRIBLE help menus (nearly non-existent would be more appropriate). The other difficulty I've had was that the software will sometimes not find the VHS feed at all, prompting the usual restarts, cursing, and unplug this or that nonsense.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy this on Newegg. Picked it up at a "big-box" retail store. I plan on doing more tests but with 2x5770's, an Asus M4A78T-E mobo (with capture device plugged directly into mobo usb), 4GB of 1333 Ram, AMD 955X4, and a clean Win7 64 install I would imagine hardware issues aren't at play here. I plan on looking elsewhere for a similar product and have seen/heard good things about Honestech. I plan on trying them or something similar, as Roxio's product is unacceptable for the price.

1 out of 5 eggsLook for anoth type of DVD recorder

Pros: Not many at all. It is OK for coping cassettes to disk. That is about all it's good for.

Cons: No manual came with package. When recording from a VHS, the sounds comes before picture about 80% of the time. Sometimes it stalls a few seconds after video first starts. Can’t pause recording to eliminate a commercial from the VHS. Doesn’t show actual usage of space required on DVD during recording. You can change the “quality” of the video that should make a smaller file as it says but I haven’t seen it work when I tried different settings. A very high priced software for a “beginners” type of software, at least that is what it looks like to me. There is no way to get a software updates from Roxio via software. Very poorly designed package.

Other Thoughts: Operating on O/S Windows 7, 64-bit. Package minimum requirements states Win7/Vista/XP Don't waste your money on this software. It is NOT the fought of Newegg, but it’s a junk Roxio product.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Reasonable audio capture. Professional-looking install media. Nice box.

Cons: Unable to maintain video throughput of higher than ~2fps. Unacceptable jumps, artifacts, semi-random colorization and saturation shifts and overall uselessness, in both software and hardware modes on a high-grade six-month old gaming rig with a clean OS install.

Other Thoughts: Unable to perform primary function.

Overpriced for what it can do, and effectively useless for what it should do.

If you need to capture video, shell out the extra $150 and get yourself a full-on ADVC. Canopus has some very nice offerings.

4 out of 5 eggsFinicky(sp?) but works

Pros: I have been able to install and run this on both Win XP and Win 7 32-bit. I haven't tried on Win7 64-bit yet so I cannot comment on that. This product works great when you get it to install correctly. I use it to burn copy of old football games and they look great. Surprisingly in Win 7 it actually IMPROVES the product while encoding. I found this a welcome surprise and was truly excited since it was almost a semi-HD picture...unbelievable! The software is pretty intuitive for me as a tech user, but a regular PC user may have to read up a little on what certain things mean.

One other great thing is it has a editing feature to allow you to remove commercials or other portions from your recordings.

Cons: I couldn't get this to install on my Vista home PC, but both my XP and Win 7 laptop run in great. Also, the 2 hour recording limit is kind of a pain when I am trying copy a 4 hour football game (with commercials) so I have to split it in two.

Other Thoughts: Install seems to be finicky and can take a while even in high powered machines so be patient. Once installed the product worked very good for me. However, the price should probably be cheaper for this product.

1 out of 5 eggsIt's a HORRIFIC waste of Money!!!!

Pros: I'll leave it to those thinking of purchasing this item to determine which is the greater disappointment: that this product will NOT install on a laptop running Windows 7/64 bit; or that ROXIO/SONIC has not responded to repeated tech support queries (other than assigning me a ticket #). This product is the epitome of "BUYER BEWARE--YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!" Do not walk, RUN AWAY from this item. If you are looking for inexpensive VHS to DVD conversion software, keep looking. The sole purpose of this product--and Roxio/Sonic's unresponsive customer support--is to steal your $50 and raise your blood pressure.

Cons: I can't fault New Egg--they didn't make this software. The only con I can think of is that I apparently have to leave a minimum of one egg for this review; clearly zero eggs or negative eggs would be warranted.

Other Thoughts: Maybe it's a blessing that this item lacks a user guide or video tutorials as my frustration would only increase exponentially if I hadn't walked away from this flawed software after a few dozen attempts to install. I don't know squat about Roxio/Sonic's bottom line but they must be losing money hand over fist if they have to resort to selling such a shoddy product. This is a lesson that cost me 50 bucks to learn: I'll never buy a Roxio/Sonic product again--nor will I let any family members or friends throw their cash away.

1 out of 5 eggsWaste Of Money and Time

Pros: Video Played through Windows

Cons: Video showed up in the Roxio Program however when ever I hit record the signal would disappear and not record anything.

I spent hours trying different things and nothing worked.

I would never buy anything Roxio again and I will tell all of my customers the same.

The software pretends to be easy and does not have an advanced controls of which maybe I would beable to fix my problem.

what a waste of money, I would have had more fun lighting a cigarette with that 50$ a spent this trash. At least that would have benefited me for 10 seconds.

Other Thoughts: Using Windows 7 64 Bit

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Product

Pros: The product, if it works, appears to be a quality product. I would suggest looking through Roxio's support forums before you make a purchase.

Cons: After 10+ attempts (no exaggeration) of uninstalling, reinstalling, and/or repairing the program using the support forums instructions. The computer involved met the required specs, i had disabled the anti-virus, and proceeded with all of the suggested methods to resolve the issue. Despite being compatible with xp, vista, and windows 7 this seems to be a constant issue with windows 7 users.

Other Thoughts: As I am looking for a moderately simple program to transfer old vhs to dvd, i plan on seeking out a product that doesn't require me to jump through hoops to use it. Generally I feel that a product deemed "easy" should probably live up to the description.

4 out of 5 eggsworks well but.....

Pros: works well... setup is a snap.... software is simple and limited... just really made for copies of the old stuff.... capture is crisp and clear with my old digital 8

Cons: works well with other editing software for my oud cam... does not allow me to portion the film out to edit.... still like it though... life in my old cam...
