1 out of 5 eggsTypical Microsoft

Pros: Only if you have an HP server..

Cons: What a joke this product is. Here Microsoft makes you think there's actually a reasonably priced edition of their server OS out there, and it ends up having some serious strings attached. Only works on specific HP servers? Happen to have an extra proliant server laying around? Yeah, that's useful. For the rest of us we're forced to buy standard which is $500+.

2 out of 5 eggsAargh..only for HP systems!

Pros: Well, I guess it IS Server 2008..I may be able to sell the license somewhere or use it somewhere else.

Cons: This can ONLY be used on HP Pro-liant servers. Wish I knew that prior to purchasing it for a server build. Also it is 64 bit only.

Other Thoughts: I guess I should have researched this item further. Oh well. Anybody want to trade me for Server 2003?

4 out of 5 eggsA step in the right direction...

Pros: Excellent platform, reasonably priced, good 'ol Windows Server 2008 R2 GUI, no limitations on traditional Server 2008 roles/features. Upgradeable to 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise should one have the need. Great way for an SMB/home user to get their feet wet in a true Domain environment.

Cons: A bit lean on the number of allowed users. Would like to see Microsoft bump this to 25 or so, or offer a per-CAL solution above the 15 user mark, especially since a sysadmin might choose to use generic accounts to run services and such, that are not actually mapped to true 'users.'

Other Thoughts: Server 2008 Foundation doesn't utilize CALs in the traditional sense, as that was not Microsoft's intention. Server 2008 Foundation is limited to access by 15 users, period. You can use it in a Domain environment, so long as you only have 15 users in your Domain. Terminal Services CALs and Rights Management CALs still apply, should you need a role that requires these on your Foundation server.

Personally, I think 15 users is a bit low, as I think there are many businesses with 20-25 users that recoil at the thought of paying 750+ for Server 2008 Standard or SBS, but would gladly shell out less than a grand for a Foundation server pre-installed on solid hardware, as Newegg currently offers. At least Microsoft is making a step in the right direction for the SMB and home user, however, for whom a Domain environment was previously cost prohibitive.

Hope this helps.
