2 out of 5 eggsNot So Great

Pros: For about 5 months appeared to help out my system running Vista with the registry and such.

Cons: I bought the extra year too soon, after they got me for a few more bucks the program went down hill after one of the updates, always had errors after boot up. The monitor block stayed in the yellow or even red most of the time.

Other Thoughts: If you want to give them a chance, don't extend your registration, you won't get your money back. I have totally removed it from my computer and sent my concerns to Iolo, and no response of course.

1 out of 5 eggsIrritating

Pros: A few useful features, fun to play with

Cons: More of a toy than anything else. It can be a real time waster if you let it. Everything is useless upon expiration of contract. Incessant marketing emails

Other Thoughts: I got this and Registry Mechanic on a deal that made them free. I'd be really angry if I had paid for them, only to have them become completely non-functional after a year. I feel that when I buy something, it is mine, and if I want to use it, even out of date, that is my privilege. This is not much more than a marketing scam to get yearly payments from customers. Who ever heard of 'renting' tools, unless it is a roto-tiller that costs too much for once a year use??

2 out of 5 eggsNagware Queen

Pros: Seems to do the job. Too bad the marketing gets in the way of a technically competent product.

Cons: This program places annoying nagging screens "update your subscription" every time the computer boots. These started in earnest a couple of months prior to the expiration date. Plus I have been getting repetitive and annoying emails for almost the entire year I have had this program. (I made the mistake of registering, now I get many notices of the upcoming renewal requirement into my email). This nagging behavior started within a few months of the install date.

Other Thoughts: By now I have been subject to hundreds of nagging "renewal" messages. Who needs or wants this kind of behavior resulting out of a consumer choice? I am eagerly waiting for my subscription to SM to expire so I can uninstall it, and promptly purchase a non-Iolo product, any non-Iolo product. Only two weeks left!

5 out of 5 eggsForever an iolo SM Fan !

Pros: The antivirus stays updated and catches everything. I downloaded the trial Prevx AV monitor to make sure that my iolo AV was working. Nothing has slipped by. The Drive Scrubber is incredible. If you think you've gotten rid of all the junk on your computer. Think again. I also said good by to my "recycle bin" and now use an "incinerator"! I also love that I can defrag my RAM after start up.

Cons: Somewhere between 4 - 6 months after owning SM '08. The antivirus stopped updating on a regular basis. I kept track on how many days went by without the AV updating regularly. I contacted the customer service and within 2 days I had the AV back working faithfully.

Other Thoughts: I signed up for 2 years of additional service. And, have already been updated to Service Mechanic Professional '09.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work on 64-Bit as ADVERTISED!

Pros: None

Cons: Their website state that THIS prodect runs on 64-Bit OS's. However when trying to instal I get a message say it does not YET work with 64-Bit?

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money if you have a 64-Bit OS.

4 out of 5 eggsjury is mostly in now ... not too shabby

Pros: - exhaustive feature set (nicely so)
- many levels of user involvement to chose from ... from none at all to moderately heavy
- a respectably well-organized GUI, esp for a utility!
- ActiveCare feature allows you to set which automatic diagnostics and repairs to allow, when, how, etc.

Cons: - impossible to know everything its doing, so you have trust it (considering the time you save, that's probably a good trade though)
- sometimes a little invasive ... like setting all html scripts, Java, etc. to open in Notepad. Sure it's safe, but the internet stops being the internet when you do that. You CAN decline these tweaks though.

Other Thoughts: Since newegg STILL doesn't let us edit prior reviews (!!!), I am posting this update. The problem I noted before with the extra long boot time turned out to have separate cause.
*** So System Mechanic Pro did _NOT_ slow down my boot time. ***
Sorry for the confusion.
I still haven't resolved the strange patterns noted before with highly questionable disk errors found. But that doesn't necessarily mean System Mech is the root of that puzzle.

2 out of 5 eggsjury is still out ... but looks bad

Pros: Loads of features / functionality. Nice GUI.
Choice to autofix or step through any/all issues found.
Desktop gadget ("dashboard") for PC health status

Cons: You either must trust this thing implicitly. or else be smarter than it. Not good choices. It's "problems" and "fixes" are looking shaky at best (see other thoughts).

Other Thoughts: Just finished a new build, all virgin parts. Had a boot time of ~40sec - nice! THEN installed/ran System Mechanic (SM). SM found MANY "problems". I let SM autofix all, then IMMEDIATELY reran SM's analysis and SM found MORE problems! Let SM autofix all, & then I immediately let SM re-analyze again ... still more "problems"! (No other app active during this time.)

Worse, boot now takes ~2 min. (Mobo logo splash screen hangs 47sec.) No help from:
- letting System Mechanic roll back all its "fixes" (!)
- reinstalling mobo chipset drivers

I may resort to rebuilding the software set from scratch (hadn't done a backup yet). But that means walking away from SM's promised functionality, and the $70 I spent on it.

Oh, and SM keeps finding harddrive errors on this brand new harddrive, but when SM runs in bootup repair mode (a variant of DOS checkdisk), it reports no errors no fix. But run the GUI desktop version of SM and it finds harddrive errors again. BTW, HDTune finds n

5 out of 5 eggsSystem Mechanic Pro

Pros: Simple, easy to install, easy to use, does the job.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I, as a Senior citizen, did not grow up with our amazing computers and I have always depended upon others for help in keeping my computer in top shape. I kept seeing ads for numerous programs and after much research about 7 months ago I decided to purchase System Mechanic Pro. That was the best decision I have made. I found SMP very easy and simple to use and the results have been amazing.
Here is all I have to do, once it is installed and analyzes my system:
1. I click the desktop icon
2. I click "View Problems"
3. I click "Repair All"
That's it, so simple I can use it and be confident that my computer problems have been repaired. I like to view the problems about once per week which is enough since I don't use my computer probably as much as some of you do. Check it out for the sake of your computer as I did. After seven months I have found no negatives to tell you about.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally, Something That Really Works

Pros: Cleans registry, temp files. Basically, It keeps my pc's running as fast as when they were new. Defragments memory. Fast running which is a big plus.

Cons: So far, I haven't found any... That was the biggest surprise !

Other Thoughts: I was very pleased with System Mechanic. It does everything they say it will. Actually, I couldn't believe how well it works !!! I am a club DJ and I have to have pc's that are fast and don't freeze. It's only program I have ever used that when I defragment the hard drive it reports that there are no fragmented files almost 80% of the time !!! I've never had that happen before on pc's I use a lot. You will not be disappointed with System Mechanic.

5 out of 5 eggsNo more Mcafee

Pros: Easy to Use

Cons: Have not found any

Other Thoughts: I love iolo. I just recently started using the anti-virus and firewall. Previously I had used Mcafee for years. Still even have 3 years of subscription left with them. I was having some real problems with my computer and even with using the rest of system mechanic was still having issues. I decided to go for it and changed 2 things. First of all I went to firefox for my browser and secondly I changed to Iolo for my antivirus. I am so glad I made these 2 changes, the best one was iolo. My computer is running great. Thank you
