4 out of 5 eggsVMware Mature

Pros: I had this prod. since v.3,4 when machines pen3 and limit 650. It always a reliable, OS crash restore OS, then all apps installed under VMW be there back in business within 1hr, that include reinstalled Win2K. Install Linux, so easy as 1,2,3. If you sick and tire of Window Upgrade just take the vmdisk and copy over Linux. Whala! You are in business, but not H-V. If you love to bring your dvlping machines with your labtop, whala! copy that then run...
Too, many good things about this product BUT see the cons.
I had 2K8 Standard think about the advantages of Hyper-V free but the H-V VBus are suck, video only limit 16bit and static size, no sound... H-V not good for the graphical environment dvlp: render-farm, nor video editing...

Cons: It limit the cpu max. 2, that meant 2 cores. Event you have P4 CPU 4 cores, or 2 Xeon, 8 cores just only use 2 cores. Oh well, I know why they do that for people hunger cpu cores like me to upgrade ESX cost $1,000...
On the other hand, the H-V have no restriction at all, take advantage of your HW.

5 out of 5 eggsGood stuff--been using it for years

Pros: When it comes to testing or experimenting with software, or just to have another system installed, nothing works better. I have four different OS images currently on disk that I can run anytime--(or the same time, but it's harder on memory) Been using VMWare for a long, long time on different builds. XP, XP Pro + 64, Vista, and currently Vista 64. You may kick yourself for not getting it sooner, once you realize what a great tool it is.

Cons: Maybe a bit of a learning curve for a few folks, but well worth it.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to enable the "Vanderpool Technology" on your mobo, or else VMWare won't be able to create 64 bit virtual images. If you want to try out some new software, but don't want to mess up your main system, then VMWare is perfect. Make your VM image, take a "snapshot" of it, then test away--you can restore the snapshot at will. You can install programs you like to use anyway on the image then take snapshots of it as you go. Any snapshot can be restored or deleted as needed. Being able to drag and drop across platforms is a nice feature too.

4 out of 5 eggsI have been wanting to try this for some time

Pros: Flawless installation into my Vaio VGN-FZ180E/B using Vista Ultimate as the host. Through VMWare I was able to install both XP Pro and a couple of Linux distros and all three OSs behaved respectfully.

Cons: I am having to start from scratch now because I just upgraded my hard drive.

Other Thoughts: I plan to use Vista again as the host (but using the 64 bit version as an initial test) because driver support for MS OSs is relatively better than others and VMWare seems to be able to use the host drivers without problems.
